This video is a Godsend for me. Since near-drowning many years ago I have been so afraid of water that I could not not look at pictures or videos of people in water. I was afraid of rain. A friend helped me get up the courage to get in a shallow pool with him and dip under the water several times. Now I walk laps in the lap pool at the gym and I find it relaxing and fun. It helps my arthritic joints more than I thought possible. Now I will start doing an exercise routine in the water, before each workout. Thank you so much.

+Laura Stone It appears you have a contact block on your account...So here is my response: I was unable to respond to your comment on my video. I don't know anyone personally in that area anymore, but I will ask around with my co-workers, and get back to you if I find anyone. Lots of times you can do a google search of PT reviews by customers/patients. Yelp has a good one. Then you can get honest opinions from the people who got service from the PTs. Good luck!

I would like to know more about the footwear and queried weights you appear to have on your legs? Can you please tell me what they are and where you were able to get them? Thanks

Water ankle weights often do a good job of stabilizing the feet in the water. The ones I am using in the video are by Sprint Aquatics, but Kiefer also makes good ones you can get through Amazon here: amzn.to/49yAJ7O (affiliate link). As far as the water shoes, they don't have to be anything fancy. They can range from the slip on sock type ones for ~$10 to ones that actually look like shoes, but have holes in the bottom for the water to drain out, which are more pricey ~$30-50.
@stoneyshappiness19759 жыл бұрын
Dr. Jo I've noticed in a couple of your water vids you seem to have weights on your ankles? I've had a stroke (20 years ago) and it seems that these ankle weights would help me walk more correctly in the water? I'm in the pool everyday! Your vids help me SSOO much!! MANY thanks!

I live on the lake and there is a sandy swimming spot we go to regularly. I have often walked in thigh-high water but tonight, I was in knee high water and actually got on my hands and 'walked' with my hands, like crawling in the water, not using my legs - just upper body. I even went backwards, facing up and crawling with my hands. It felt like I was getting a good work out for my arms and shoulders. Do you have any advice for me on this?

Can water pressure hurt your back if you have bulging disc...After walking in the pool my back hurts so much more...why is that
@AskDoctorJo10 жыл бұрын
No. It actually helps your back by taking away impact. It could be because you walked more than you have in awhile. Water is very deceiving because it usually doesn't hurt while you are doing it, so you end up doing too much the first few times. You might do better with deep water activities where you are getting some traction in your back while working out: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/deep-water-exercises-pool Good luck!

Are you wearing a special shoes? Not sure my pool rules allow footwear.

They are water shoes. You don't have to wear them, but if you are in a pool with a rough floor, they help protect your feet. Good luck.

Is one supposed to wear shoes when walking in the pool?
@AskDoctorJo6 ай бұрын
Shoes don't have to be worn, but they can be helpful for many things including to decrease slipping and to protect feet from rubbing on the pool floor.

Can you tell us a little bit about what problems we might have if we have bad form? I've been doing laps but do lean forwards a lot just trying to get through them faster.
@AskDoctorJo6 жыл бұрын
People often tend to lean forward when walking in the pool. In the pool, our center of gravity is slightly more forward (not much though), so our bodies tend to want to lean into the water. Try squeezing your shoulder blades back and together and push your hips forward when you walk, and see if that helps some.

Thankyou so much! Am I going to develop any problems if I've been doing it that way for a while?

You're welcome. I don't think so.
