This video is more important than most will think. People see the influencers they follow warming up on bench press with 100kg as if that’s normal. Being able to bench 100kg puts you into the top 1% of the population in terms of strength. It’s not normal. But social media makes people think they’re weak if they can’t do it.
@ithinkthereforeitalk9357 ай бұрын
Well, if you regularly go to the gym for a couple of years and train there instead of watching KZbin it's kinda normal and expected of you. Nothing crazy about benching this weight. Most people cannot do that cause they don't want to not because it's that hard.

I needed this today. Yesterday I ran a 1hr 29 10K, came third from last, and was pipped to the finish by the winner of the half marathon that was happening at the same time. It’s easy to take away from that that I’m a terrible runner, and maybe I am, but I’m a runner, and that on its own is more than most.

100% - I have just been on a holiday resort for while, mainly shall we say people of below average fitness. I was in the gym on the resort most days, usually empty, doing a decent workout and feeling "fit" - then one day I hit the gym at a busy time and the small % of the people staying at the resort who were quite fit all seemed to be in the gym that day, and all seemed to be stronger than me!

In my 60th year on this planet I sometimes get depressed that I'll never be as fast cycling or running or bench press as much as I could when I was 30 but your channel cheers me up. I am at least a minute a mile slower running than when I was 50 and my 5k now is nearly 8 minutes slower than when I was 30. I am similarly way slower on a bike. I realise, as I think you do too , that you can't compete against your younger self...and you shouldn't... but compared to the rest of the world I think we are doing ok. My Garmin reckons I'm Excellent vo2 running and Superior vo2 still for cycling for my age. Many studies show great increase in life expectancy for keeping fit. You don't need to keep winning races. You just need to see your grandkids grow up. I had a MacD's 2 weeks ago for the first time in years and felt proper ill next day! I worry that our health system is gonna explode in a few years.

Well, as there is no official definition of a pull-up, it's a valid question that, really, only experienced people can even know about. Things like kipping, swinging, raising knees, locking elbows... Everybody has a different definition of what constitutes a proper pull-up. For me, it would be: No kipping, pause at the top and bottom, straight arms to clavicle to the bar. I can't stand that stupid “chin-up” jerk many people do, trying to stretch their necks to make the finish. Anyhow, I'd say it makes sense asking about what the proper form required is supposed to be.
@Mowsemowse7 ай бұрын
@@notjustforme argh that stupid chin thing people do... And don't even get me started on kipping. I say this as a person who can only manage about 7 pull ups on a very good day. Using poor form to get better numbers is only cheating yourself.
@yewtewbstew5476 ай бұрын
@@notjustforme It's also quite difficult to "learn" as an adult. Like if you're not strong enough to do a single pullup, then the only way to get there is to train a regression of the same movement pattern. And the average person has no idea what that even means. It's not rocket science, but you do need at least some resistance training experience to know that. Not to mention a lot of people just aren't willing to do that. They'll try a regular pull up, fail, and then just conclude that it's hopeless and give up. When it comes to fitness a lot of people out there, maybe even most, have an "all or nothing" attitude combined with very low physical capability. Almost like they're embarassed to be seen doing anything less than the most advanced training methods. And obviously the problem with that mindset is if you're not physically capable of achieving everything, which hardly anyone is otherwise we'd all be profession athletes, then you consign yourself to achieving nothing.
