@@davidcronan4072 I'd disagree. Do-gooder is an ironic term, isn't it? To refer to someone who seems to think they're doing good but half the time isn't. I fell out without a woman I knew on FB once because she was supporting a charity that was telling people to go bring them underweight hedgehogs. That is hardly the way to save hedgehogs (and then the 'charity' would try chug a little donation out of you, typically). In fact, there's a chance it'd lead to numbers falling further. People described as woke are pissed by the fact that there's a class war going on. If you're not woke, you're either a tory or should check your brain activity at hospital.

The original definition is "Being aware of social inequalities e.g. bigotry", so conservatives saying they're "anti woke" is them saying they don't want to be aware of social inequalities. They're saying the quiet part loud without even realizing it.

'political correctness' is used in the same way to discredit being aware/taking action of inequalities and for progressive ideas. Both are used intentionally this way to stigmatise the word and thus, stigmatise being associated with anything that is apart of progressive ideas, activism, movements etc. It's simply to discredit so they can be ignored from the beginning. So because of that, the definition is changing because of how it is being used. A replacement for the original use of the word 'woke' would probably be progressive, 'being progressive'. There's maybe another word out there which is better suited though (can't think off the top of my head)

To be clear, I understand that the word "woke" before it was twisted by its critics had a different meaning, my point with drawing parallels with political correctness is to point out that it's used by critics as an alternative for "political correctness". That’s strange because I heard the word woke the past 15 years from black American tv shows, film, and mostly American rap music. I’ll never forget the day when I went to visit my mother, she had radio 4 on, and they were discussing ‘wokeness’. By the time your parents find out the slang, it’s lost its cool. Being a con, conservatives are always vague about the terms they use. That way it can be used flexibility and allow plausible deniability. They never defined Brexit for the referendum, that way they could get lots of people believing in different things to vote the same way. They would never get a majority for any specific defined Brexit. Similarly they can rile lots of people up about the woke mob, but could never do that for a specific defined wokism.

Woke as I understad it refers to being aware of social injustice, its causes and its impacts - It is IMO a positive term. The issue is that it requires conservatives to address systemic issues. Conservativism seeks to maintain the illusion of meritocracy and so anything that challenges that view is in their eyes a negative - hence a disdain for woke. They use it as a pejorative when in fact it is a badge of honour.

You know I have asked this question of people before only to watch them flounder. It’s simple just treat other people with the respect you want them to treat you. It’s not difficult, nor should it cause anyone to feel uncomfortable or scared. Basically for them it’s about being not being allowed to treat people with disrespect and to being allowed to think of other people as lesser. Simple example in the Conservative party , Sunak despite being a sane person, not much of a qualification for PM, did not stand a hope in hell of being elected by the Conservative party members. Personally I am delighted as Truss has imploded the Conservative party wonderfully well , I just wish she could have done it without causing such hardship for so many people. Sunak would have taken longer. However 13 years of Tory leadership would have lead to the parties inevitable collapse. It’s a lot more difficult to say what the opposite of being woke is because it’s so omnipresent and prevalent amongst a certain section of society. However given how the Conservatives have so royally screwed themselves we have the perfect example of what happens when you don’t treat others with that respect that you yourself would wish.

The word "woke" is African-American vernacular for being awake to racial prejudice and discrimination. It's quite clear that the people in this video haven't a clue what it means, because they're too lazy to find out. Right-wingers have now turned the original meaning of the word on its head. They don't know what it means, but they'll repeat it parrot fashion, and apply it to anything they see as left-wing. British right-wingers use it because it's just another trendy American right-wing term they've picked up from the media or a colleague, a prime example being Piers Morgan! If you use the word as a slur against another person or a certain group of people, then you're being a racist, such as, calling the Black Lives Matter movement woke, or being discriminatory when applied to something like the many LGBT movements. Another word that the right-wing has taken completely out of context is the American term, "snowflake"!

to be woke is to be sensitive to social and political injustice, however what is up for opinion is what each individual would consider a social and political injustice its quite a broad term Justice is just another social construct what one would consider justice may not be the same as another. having a democracy tries to figure out what MOST people consider the correct cause of action and agian this becomes a problem when the democratic system is taken advantage of by people who wish to transfer wealth and power to a select few while gaslighting everybody else
