The best thing about the health bar in DS1 is it grew past what the screen could show. I think up until like 2100 Hp? If you had mommy mask, life and Fap rings. It would take seconds of combat for your health bar to actually reflect it. Like Kingdom Hearts 1 Sephiroth health lol.

Just speculation followed by no actual data: 2 handed tends to be one of the most popular options in other games as well. Other 2 options you often see in other games is either bow or double daggers. Since DS is heavily melee focused game and not regaining arrows on death causes bow to be usually avoided as anything other than aggro tool. Dualwielding on the other hand isn't supported by the game mechanics at all. Zweihander and claymore are also few of the only obviously good pve weapons found in the early game that new players get their hands on easily. I personally went as 2handed on my first playthrough for these reason and because it's the way i play most of the RPGs in general. Also only friend of mine that finished DS before me claimed that magic can be confusing and vendors for better spells can be hidden so he didn't recommend being a mage. TBH i agree to some extend because it's rather easy to miss some NPC quest lines especially if you don't pay attention to all the dialogue and/or explore already explored areas often or at all or if you are just bad at memorizing hints. Although I personally wouldn't discourage anyone from those starting classes because even the starting spells can be rather good because of the number of casts on them is higher and scaling still works on them and because pretty much everyone can find at least the first merchant for each spell type. Most of my friends went with sword and shield. one used black knight sword he managed to get and rest used uchigatana because they are murder hobos with no regard for vendor life(or walkthrough followers) and also weebs.

My quess would be magic system being not well explained or ppl having this image of mages being always squishy classcannons. Later point could be it as DS is marketed and hyped as hard game so wouldn't be surprised if that causes ppl to pick sturdier characters. I do think that it would be fun to see blind mage playthrough or two. doesn't matter which magic type. I Think what makes this lack of mage playthroughs even worse is that so many ppl don't play DS more than once and most magic playthroughs are either speedruns or odd one hit challenges. I would be just as happy to see ppl tackle magic "normally" just after finishing the initial playthrough.
