He was being lied to, or we all being lied to thinking the more virtual, brain relatives works, the better the future there will be, and people think AI is not going to replace human in area that require creativity, like art. The problem for most art is, they are nothing more than copy paste different previously created arts to generate new ones, which is exactly the how the whole machine learning model training works, and computer can do it much better than human. People can predict AI is coming 5 years ago, but they wrongly predict where AI took off from. They think AI will replace burger flipping job first, people thinking taking art degree will be AI proof. That is what happened.

One thing new people in the work force are rarely taught nowadays is the importance of institutional knowledge. There is such a huge focus on Education and people think if they have a degree that is enough. Education gets you in the door and institutional knowledge keeps you there. Bonus points for common sense/street smarts. Once you get a job at a company you want to do everything you can to gain institutional knowledge and from personal experience people don't want to give that up for free, but volunteering for scut work will help a lot with gaining respect from co-workers and that will go a long way to getting institutional knowledge

The day i was informed of being let go i did a factory reset on my office computer and deleted several jobs for their biggest clients. The called me 2 weeks after i had been let go asking me if i had the files and i said "I don't have them. They should be on the computer i left behind." Only having to work 2 to 3 hours was a recent change, he wasn't getting enough requests to keep him busy anymore, prior to that, he was doing full days of work and was unable to take vacation because the entire company was dependent on his work. That change in workload came about because the company was, behind his back, implementing AI. In short, any time during the planning and implementation phases, they could have let him know he was going to be out of a job if the implementation worked out. It will take way longer though. The thing with AI is that it scales extremely well. Since Robots are phyical objects they scale horribly. Unless you have a very specific repetitive task. It will take forever until robots replace electricians, technicians and so on. A humanoid robot is very expensive. Cost will come down but it will take along time until they will be chaper than you are. A robot of a specific form like a car, warehouse-machine, a checkout register, a tractor or combine to work the field - that is relatively easy to build.
@ManicMindTrick
@ManicMindTrick 22 күн бұрын
Yeah but the robotics side will be last last piece if the puzzle to slide into place. When that happens humans are obselete. Things are going to get very weird. That is best case scenario as well. Worst case scenario is that we create an AI in the coming months who manage to figure out self improvement which leads to a positive feedback loop and it wipes out humanity. A lot of people think that has zero probability, but a lot of people on the cutting edge of AI who aren't blinded by their bias and enthusiasm realize its a possibility. We dont know what happens when you scale up these models further. You just need to reach that threshold where self improvement is possible and we dont really know when that is going to be or the mechanism for how that plays out. My suggestion is to do the things in life you always wanted to do before its too late and try your best to pause AGI development. If humanity was wise we would stop all training of models more powerful that GPT 4. Its not going to happen.

Took me four months to find a new job at SpaceX. It was the only interview I got out of hundreds of applications. I will now be using AI on a daily basis. My boss cried when HR let me go and said it was so unfair because I was the smartest person in our division and they recently asked me to come back in an AI related role supporting the same stuff I was doing. I had to decline because of new role even after they offered 40% increase in my salary as I was already making nearly twice as much at my new job. It felt really good to stick it to them after telling them on the severance call with hr and my boss all the reasons they still needed me, but due to the fact everyone’s job is in jeopardy because I was the only IT guy in my division they were fast to get rid of me cuz I was sort of an outcast after Covid happened and moving away and working remote I wasn’t in the office to defend myself.

What this means is that rather than everyone losing their jobs to AI, entire companies will lose industries to AI. If a company can replace an employee with AI, the logical next step is for another company using AI to step in and take market share from that company. The market will be saturated with AI vs AI, where there’s no discerning between companies anymore. And unfortunately, this will happen with every industry that AI can affect. I’m an MEP engineer, at a certain point it will come for our industry too, where weeks of AutoCAD and Revit work, arguing with architects and clients, and dealing with contractors will become entirely engineered buildings within a fraction of a second per the client’s request. If the client wants an extra room, or more ceiling height, or whatever, just tell AI and it will regenerate there building again rather than take a week to review and work on. But if a company can “hire” AI for that, then any company can do it, and we’re out of work too. The only fields that are protected anymore (At least for now) are trade fields.

Most trades won't be protected. For new builds if an entire house can be 3d printed, robots can easily do all the plumbing/wiring etc based on predetermined schematics incredibly easily, meaning only repairs in existing properties will temporarily escape AI. Yet I can go on youtube and learn to build a roof professionally in a very short period of time, the only reason (other than not needing a new roof rn) is I work 40 hours a week and don't have time to do it myself. If I was unemployed with 50% of the workforce due to AI I could easily learn to do 70% of the trade work I'd need in my own home. The only exceptions would be some technically difficult skills (laying brick well is damn hard without a lot of experience) or things that are very knowledge intense such as electrics that you could screw up badly.

Considering that LLMs seem to be plateauing, this job market seems to be quite safe for now. However with AI being much better for entry level work than junior devs, my worry is that we will see the full impact on maybe 10-20 years when it will be extremely difficult to find skilled people who suffered through many AI-solvable problems without using AI, learning the necessary problem-solving skills to even be able to become senior in the first place. So my prediction is that the impact will be significant, but indirect and delayed.

Like Asmon said, graphic designers are problem solvers, so focus on how you can solve problems. I’ve seen a lot of young designers making shorts and TikTok videos where they redesign logos for companies that need better ones. Showcasing your skills like that can be really effective. When I was in graphic design school, we didn’t touch much on animation, 3D modeling, or coding, so now is a great time to expand your skill set if you don't have those. Also, selling your physical products can be a great start-lots of people are making money on TikTok doing that. If you can find a mentor, that would be amazing. I wish I had one when I was younger. I think one of the best pieces of advice Gary Vee gave was to intern somewhere if you're young and able. It's a great way to meet people and network. Quick tip from a 50 year old in the mortgage industry that is famous for layoffs during slow downs. When you have any free time at work, ask to learn other positions. Learn as many positions as you can. Yeah, it sucks but not as much as losing your job. My comapny just laid off 6 out of the 8 people in my department. I worked there as a temp for 2 years. They laid off 4 employees and 2 other temps. They kept me and hired me on as an employee. This only happened because I learned 3 different positions over those 2 years. Now I'm in charge of 2 different areas and I'll be the one hiring people when it picks up again. I never say no to anything at work. If I'm asked if I can do something, the answer is always yes. The only way to avoid this is to work for daddy or start your own business.

I'm currently not at risk, but I can't really think of a job that couldn't, in some way, be taken over by some form of robot in the future so this will likely impact everyone at some point. We really need to get this figured out sooner, rather than later.

Dream job as a kid was video game designer. One summer for cash I became a plumber helper... really liked the cash, decided to apprentice... 10 years ago. But what's crazy is I can see it coming. Jobsite AI. It's going to eliminate a ton of office construction jobs too. Instead of sending in an RFI to a PM and it taking potentially days or weeks to get it rectified, you'll just query the construction AI. If you're driving past a jobsite, and you see guys on their phones, all our drawings are on Apps now. There are physical drawings, but the digital stuff is taking over. Updates come in at any time, notes added in real time... it's pretty crazy.🎉

@@Ebb0Productions No, that safety is a fallacy. Manual labor jobs are safe from AI, but if you push all of those former office workers out into the job market, all remaining jobs will suffer greatly. You will now have to compete against a huge surplus of workers, while also dealing with lower demand because most people just lost their primary source of income.

The guy was way out saying people who'd only been there 1-2 years will get 1 month salary as redundancy - In the UK you're entitled to 1 week per year served and only after you've been there 2 years. We do also get any remaining leave paid out as well (which is much more than is typical in the US, normally 20-24 days plus public holidays). I was made redundant during covid and was very lucky that the company voluntered to pay twice the statutory minimum. As for what Asmon said about the cost of college, £50-70k would be fairly typical debt for 3-5 year's study if they took the full maintenance loan (money to live on) that was available.

Honestly I been seeing this happen for almost 10 years. It is just history repeating itself. People reacted the same way when industrial machinery was implemented for a lot of production processes. If people haven't saw it yet, low level HR workers be wary. I did contract work for a major international corporation last year and they laid off the part of HR that handle applications. They feed all the accepted applications and the criteria used to approved them into AI to "streamline" that part of the hiring process. I watched as those people cleared out their section of the floor. I told people to be wary of this stuff, this been happening in the IT field for years before this stuff started happening. We would have teams of at least 10 people for workplaces of 1000+. I was working at a place with a capacity of about 1500, I had two teammates at that location. They been cutting down on IT support for years, the early stages of this was the knowledge article recommendation based on your issue. All made by IT support documentation and word association.

I'm a graphic designer myself... 10+ years of experience. In college they told us we're always going to be needed... never could we have guessed we'd be the first ones out by our AI overlords. It's quite terrifying. What am I supposed to do? Go back to school all over again with 0 years of experience? Then that job gets taken over by AI... I totally understand automation and repetitive tasks, but creative jobs give people meaning and feels fulfilling. I'm happy I still have my job, but for how long? I don't think we're headed in a good direction. Right now if you're not affected it's like "whatever", but you won't feel the same when your job is also on the line... and best of all, you'll never see it coming.

Learning the basics gets you in the door. Expanding your skillset or work on your soft skills (like make other departments see your work) is how you get some upwards mobility. This guy works for two hours a day (towards the end) and he didn't take any of that time to try to change his place in the company. If he didn't use that time to think of his own projects at the company, something like "we can rework x to adapt to this new thing here", then that's on him.

It's the latest entry in my 'Being Creative' playlist 😂 It really is the stuff of nightmares, but I think he still has legs in the industry. - There are in-house design positions. The only issue is he'd likely be a team of one. - Proper ad/branding agencies. The crunch though - Education is seemingly evergreen, just have to make adjustments for a more modest lifestyle - Freelance. We know how that goes but as long as he can manage the feast or famine fluctuations, he'll be alright - Do what his job did. Start a company of his own and leverage his design thinking to get superior output from his AI

Companies have done this for years. New CEO comes in, sees you are the oldest members your contracts are older, and you are "unjustly overpaid". So a new hire comes in and you are personally asked to train your replacement. Just so happened that this replacement was an algorithmic intelligence. The old three steps to firing the grizzled veteran of the group.

Actually there are two kind of ''creativity jobs' This first kind of 'creative people working to solve business requirements' would be the first to go. That kind of job is usually pretty repetitive and does not have that much ceiling for creativity input. The second type where the creativity itself is the product... Should be mostly fine for now. You can have an AI to make a tetris or bejeweled clone, but you can't make a full package game with tight gameplay, good story, and great art without any input from humans. You can automate some jobs (heck new Unreal Engine updates basically will kill or reduce a lot of people in VFX, texture artist, map designer, etc) but some humans will still need to give input for some foreseeable future. If I am a student/will have child though, I guess some parts of blue collar jobs will still be safe for some time?😮

the sole reason is that - those jobs revolve around the computer space. you mostly need average hardware that is readily available and some software for the AI to work one way or the other what people thought would come first will legitimately happen last - a robot that does day-to-day menial jobs? bruh, not only it would be super costly, but maintenance would be a bitch too electricians, plumbers, carpenters, etc have prolly at least 200 years of work safety in front of them. writers, musicians, artists, programmers have to worry about AI today

The main issue I see from this is that the AI is just leaning from human creativity. What happens when there is no more human creativity and everything is just an AI inspired version of an AI inspired version - everything will be generic but it will also be 99% cheaper to produce. Ai is basically bringing mass production to creative media industry
