Muddling any plant like mint or basil without min 40% alcohol spirit or liquid nitrogen will simply start oxidation and make the drink unnecessarily bitter. You might want to read the book liquid intelligence bro because this will not be a good basil smash

I doubt it absolutely ruins it. May alter the flavor a tiny bit. Besides, mistakes have created some of the best cocktails ever. Sometimes doing things wrong makes things better. There's no 1 right way to do anything
