If a switch has "milky housing", it means that the top of the switch is made from a different kind of plastic. This effects the rgb shinethrough (more even bot not as intense), and gives the switch a more deeper and fuller sound.

Btw, if you have some switches with spring ping or leaf ping, you can lube these with appropriate lube (e.g. krytox 205g0 for linears and tribosys 3204 for tactiles) and the sounds will be gone. So that's how you can eliminate spring ping in cherry switches if you really enjoy using them... (And if you lube a switch, it will make it much smoother compared to the stock experience.)

Just finished up my first plateless build recently, and I'm in love with it. It's incredibly bouncy and fun to type on. Some of my favorite linear switches are Tecsee Diamonds/Jadeites. They're incredibly smooth because of the UHMWPE Stem and Top Housing, but also deep sounding because of the PC Bottom Housing. An alternate to them would be Giant V5s, but they're more clacky sounding because of the Nylon Bottom Housing. They're both highly underrated switches imo, and if recommend anybody in the hobby to try them out. If you want some good tactiles, Mint Chocolate Chip POMs are a very poppy sounding tactile with a similar D shaped bump as BobaU4Ts. I recommend a top mount with a stiffer plate like brass if you use tactiles.

Sometimes it's hard to tell the differences, but having the switches right there next to each other for fast comparison is awesome and makes it much easier. Like you, I particularly enjoyed the sound of the Cherry milk key, so I looked into it. Apparently, they're only called 'milk' in Asia - 'white' in the west. They seem to be notorious for consistency problems, i.e. one of the white keys might sound and feel great but another could feel bad. There's a Reddit thread on it if you're interested. It's a shame because I really liked that one. But I'm very interested in the Gateron silent keys though. Need to look into them. Thank you for showcasing this! This is something I've never explored before and I think it's fascinating. Also, 'cN' is centinewtons (100 centinewtons = 1 Newton). The Newton is a standard measure of force, so this refers to how hard you have to press the key. As an example, the Cherry MX blacks are rated at 60cN, which is 0.6N. Hope the Jan/Feb schedule is working well for you!!
@laxxie82342 жыл бұрын
cN is basically an equivalent to grams, when we talk about the operating force of the mechanical switches

@@kam8556 if you're gonna build a custom keyboard, there are a ton of different options. I would suggest you to pick a sound profile you personally like (e.g. low-pitched or thock (that's how it's called in the community), high-pitched (or clacky), poppy, muted, etc.) and the type of the switch (linear, tactile or clicky). Then there are different materials for plates (like fr4, polycarbonate, aluminum, brass, etc.) and cases (plastic, aluminum, etc.) which can also affect the sound pretty heavily. And there are even lots of mods with which you can upgrade your keyboard (like tape-mod where you basically put tape under your PCB to improve the sound, pe-foam which gives a poppy sound signature and so on).

Seeing as a lot of other people have answered the other questions Gibi had like spring ping and milky housing so I'll answered the so far unaswered question of the BOX switches. It just means the way the stem is shaped. Many of the stems have a litte cross on the top that goes into the keycaps. BOX switches have that same cross but they also have a little "box" around them that helps them stay a lot more stable and not wiggle around as much. It shouldn't effect the sound at all just stability. Also... we all have that "breaking up with cherry" moment, trust me.

Something I've really been enjoying is using a super fast and light switch (khail speed silver) for the normal typing keys and then tactile switches (cherry browns) for modifiers, space bar, etc. Typing and gaming are super fast but with a tactile punctuation at the end of each word. I also tend to leave my thumb on the space bar and the silvers are so light that I would accidentally actuate some times and the browns fix that as well.
