The bones of an enormous sea dragon rest on Nagga's Hill. But its description has been the subject of much debate. Let's discuss..
this video contains essay analysis of the Ironborn legend of the sea dragon Nagga I had written on r/ASOIAF entitled "Can we talk about Nagga?"" which discusses the various theories surrounding Nagga's bones and speculates as to the true origins of Nagga and the legendary Grey King.

Perhaps Naga was a weirwood ship captained by some ancestral enemy of the Ironborn. The Grey King defeated this foe and hauled the ship onto land and made it his hall, and over time the tale of his defeating the foe in battle became so shrouded in poetic metaphor that the legend morphed into one of him defeating a mighty sea dragon. FWIW there was also a viking ship named "The Long Serpent" in some of the Sagas so not only were the old Scandinavians making their ships' prows look like dragons, they were consciously trying to draw those parallels themselves.

I've gone back and forth on this one so many times. The kid in me hears about dragons and imagines the flying dragons like Dany has. But the pessimistic adult in me says ships. Have you noticed that side from Ashai almost every place with hints of dragons seems to be an island? If I stand back from it I notice that all the dragons, including the ones in the east, are all bound to islands and peninsulas. From that, where are all the attacks by dragons or Valyrians? Dragonsrone. Battle isle. Sea Dragon Point. Old Wyk. The cities along the Rhoyne. The cities along the Sarne. Lorath. Everywhere the Dragons attacked or lived was close to water. One of the reasons the attacks on the Rhoynar are important is that the Rhoyne is a monstrous river. This is important because this means that unlike most rivers in the world, this one can be sailed by ships. Not just sleek shallow ones, but massive ones that sit low in the water. In fact, it's still known for the fact it's sailed by pirates. It is for this reason I believe the most reasonable explanation for the stories of dragons as they relate to humans is that they are in fact monstrous ships. These ships were probably so massive you might consider them to be floating castles or perhaps cities. Before I go on, I'd like to reassure anyone that's read this far, I'm not saying there weren't any flying lizard dragons. That's how GRRM manages to mess with our heads so easily. The history of two or more things can be confused because the name for those things is the same. Is a pain because it leaves us arguing like Maesters. LMAO, which I believe is in some way a point GRRM is making. Listen or read any thing like this video, and isn't it fundamentally exactly the same as Yandel's world book? We read the books, which we consider contemporary works of history, or as true history. We read each other's works, or watch, and create our own. To me it's a fascinating concept I enjoy. That said, I believe real flying dragons existed. But I believe the fact that they existed creates the confusion. Alright. This is going to seem insane to some but give it a go and I think you might be surprised. Let's look at the structure and beliefs of the people of the iron islands. Anyone with a ship is a captain, which automatically makes him a Lord within the culture. When they choose a leader to lead everyone they do this by voting. You can kill your rivals, but this is extremely rarely done during the event. Evidence for why you should lead is presented and everyone "with a ship" votes. Captains/Lords/kings take both a salt and a rock wife. They maintain land holdings, as well as their ships (they live on both land and sea). It's the people with ships that seems to have all the power. You can for example have only land holdings, but without a ship how would you get to a kingsmoot? Now let's take a quick look at the Freehold of Valyria. What is the first thing said about every single free city? While they were established by the free hold they did not have self rule, but were governed by men and women sent by the freehold. I remember this first time I read about the first free city. I remember thinking how silly it was that there was an idea of a free city that didn't rule itself. I remember reading about the third and for a moment I was actually irritated because it was starting to sound dumb. And I remember how I laughed as I went through the last few. How could every free city be ruled by people sent to rule them rather than by an council made up of local land holders? The fundamental questions became, what does it take to be a true "Lord" in the freehold? Where do the "holds" that are free HAVE to exist to give them value and freedom within the system? To answer this question required a lot of reading. What I learned in this reading was how many of the ancient Mediterranean communities worked. For instance, democracy in Greece was representative. Every citizen voted. But what was the catch? Oh, becoming a citizen wasn't the easy part. Just being born there wasn't enough, just being racially Greek wasn't enough, you could move there and own more than most but that wasn't enough. Most of the people there weren't citizens. That seemed weird until I wrapped my brain around the idea that it was certain "noble" families that were essentially the core "citizens." When Alexander died his "empire" was carved up by his generals who were mostly nobles. Rome had a very interesting history trying to come to terms with who had rights and the ability to vote and such. What I grew to understand is that the "freehold" was in many ways modelled on the Roman Empire. It was ownership in the city or the original area of Valyeria that mattered. A funny quirk noticed was that having a dragon rider wasn't the requirement. Many freehold families did have dragonriders. Iron Born have a practice of Thralls. Valyrians have a practice of slaves. Ghis as well. The parallels between the three seem to fall into place once you look at them. I know people will probably read this and say it's coincidence, and maybe it is, but why did Aegon have two wives (rock and salt?)? I considered the appearance of the Targaryans and asked myself if some people might describe it as grey. If the original grey king had been an Albino, how would history have recorded his appearance and how would that have survived thousands of years being passed down? How do hardwoods relate to ships? Hardwood ships sink. However, if you build the core structure out of hardwood, and the rest of lighter materials they are strong and can hold a great deal more without sinking. With that in mind the bones make sense. You wouldn't build the entire ship out of weirwood, just the frame. Ships are an interesting part of the story. I think the reason they have such a large role is because of the role they played in GRRM's life as a child. He explored the world in his mind by watching ships and imagining where they had been. This man LOVES ships. Even slaying Nagga if the dragons were ships makes sense. Long ships made of weirwood would have been excellent rams to use against monstrous dromonds. It they were constructed of single pieces, and thin enough, a good team of rowers could begin a fair ways out and ram themselves against larger ships. Weirwood wouldn't take much damage, they'd be like stone or iron spikes. As I read more and more it all seemed to make sense. The Rhoynar defeating three dragons and then the freehold sending 300. Remember triarchs. Substitute the word Dragon for Ship Captain. Consider, if the Valyrians were or were similar to Iron Born pirates. Consider they call themselves dragons and blood of the dragon. Triarchs would most likely have been nobles and if so may have, much like Dany, called themselves Dragons a hundred times a day. It seems ridiculous because it happened so recently, but how will history remember the deaths of Aerys2, Rhaegar, and Viserys? If you were a Valyrian writing history or you were writing history for a Valyrian, what words would you use? Did Ser Jamie slay the dragon Aerys would threatened to burn down kingslanding, Ser Robert who slew the dragon Rhaegar as he battled him on the trident, the savage Khal Drogo who slay the Dragon Viserys? It only takes a few shifting words and time to bend a story to the point you aren't quite sure any more. Aerion leaving Qohor with an army towards Valyria and never returning. Was he a Triarch who loaded them all into ships and sailed, or did he fly at the head of a horde that marched? If you thought of Valryians as all riding dragons, and you repeated a story about one leaving Qohor for Valyria would the words you used be different than if you thought of a Dragon as a ship? The phrase "took troops and left for Valyria. " How sure can you ever be that a maester didn't change the word "left" to something more verbally exciting, like "marched" or "descended".

At this point some are choking and spitting because the Valyrians "found dragons nesting in the 14 flames." Remember, I'm not saying all dragon stories are about ships. I'm saying some are about ships, some are about flying fire lizards, some are about sea creatures and some are about humans that call themselves dragons. So what if I tried substitute the name Sea Dragon or valyrian or king or pirate? In the context of a human being stomping a foot and shouting "I am a dragon, of the blood of Valyria." How would you understand the sentence "the grey king slew the Sea King/pirate/valyrian?" If you thought of dragons as ships or armies how would you understand the sentence "dragons were controlled by whips and horns." Could the word dragon have been used by Valyrians for the same way as legion? Did Valyrians ride legions/dragons to war. Could a Legion/Dragon have been called a Dragon because it was lead by a King/Noble/Triarch Who was of "true" valyrian blood thus always calling him or her self a dragon? Think of that in the context of the Rhoynar defeating 3 dragons/legions and then being faced with 300 dragons/legions. This is not to say dragons also did not exist a fire lizards at the same time. If somehow an ability was existed within certain Valyrians to actually ride them this would have lead to how they think of themselves. Keep in mind that Aerys, Rhaegar, Viserys, and Dany call clearly called themselves Dragons, and this when they had no dragons to ride. If Valyrians always called themselves Dragons regardless it makes it harder to pick out the real dragonriders. There are many theories for why the Targaryans waited 100 years to attack. Some or them are superstitious, some practical. They came with several "dragons" to Dragonstone. Far more than they had when they attacked. Why then did they only have three? Well, what if the first Targaryans couldn't ride the dragons? What if Aegon and his sisters were the first Targaryans (note I said Targs and not valyrians) with the ability to bond with a dragon? What if all the time spent inbreeding and bringing other Valyrian families into their own was to gain the ability?

There are also several concepts within Asshai that make me question a number of ideas we firmly believe. Within the world book we are given a number of references to reavers in the far East. These do not entirely seem to refer to sea pirates. A few emperors have set their seats in places to better defend from them. But what exactly are they? What are shadowmen? The quick among you might say "tall tattooed people who where red masks." That seems to be true. But, how else could you describe them in the fewest words? Describe Quaithe really quickly. Now I'm not literally saying at this point that there is any actual relationship with the group, but since her mask is never removed would it be fair to call her a faceless woman? If I sent you into Qarth to find her and told you to find a faceless woman, would you think it might be her? What do you think makes them red? Always wonder if they might be "painted" with weirwood sap. But anyway. So with some of the ideas previously mentioned. If I said "dragons stirred beneath the shadow" what other ideas appear? Legions or armies? A people with shared ancestry to the Valyrians? I find that most of what Bran and Jojen see seems to be done with symbolism rather than literal images. He sees shadows in kingslanding. People seem to think the golden one might be Jamie. But he's seen Jamie and the hound, so why does he see shadows and not their actual identity? This makes me wonder about the dragons in the East. If Bran sees with symbolism, while it doesn't factually rule out literal shapes, does it start to make you wonder if he's seeing literal dragons or if he's seeing figurative dragons? What if the Golden shadow is simply Lannister influence? What if the Hound like shadow is his father's influence? And what if the stone shadow is Petyr or Faceless men influence? What if he basicly saw the idea that Littlefinger controls everything and that neither the Starks or Lannisters have any idea, and that he's basicly manipulating them? Some will point out that GRRM said dragons were everywhere. But GRRM is a troll, and he loves to hide behind plays on word or double meanings. If pirates were everywhere and they were in ships called Dragons he isn't lying to you. If armies were lead by Valyrians who called themselves Dragons, he isn't lying. He's telling you the truth (Obiwan voice) so he did tell you the truth, from a certain point of view. There may also have been firebreathing lizards in the air from which they borrowed the name. They may have existed at the same time. If you point it out and ask him he'll just smile at you and say "who knows, it was so long ago and there don't seem to be any books to tell us." So, circling back to the beginning. Who's recording the history of the grey king? If I imagine a people who live around weirwoods and they personally sacrifice to them, or they witness other people sacrificing to the, and their king cuts down one and they build long ships. If lightening were to suddenly strike a weirwood and set it aflame, would they say their hero did it, or that it just happened? If the Grey/Pale King and his army forced a massive dromund to beach itself on Old Wyk and they managed to get it tipped? Or it capsized and was pushed to ground. What if real dragons were somehow associated or enslaved or some such by these huge ships? What if the Grey King was the first person they knew who could bond with a dragon and while the ship was ruined, there was a dragon and the Grey King commanded it and that is why they say he stole fire from the gods or why they say he warmed his halls with Nagga's fire? Some thing else that is little noted is that several Iron Born families have a very northern mountain clan way of speaking about their leader. The Stonehouse is the leader of house Stonehouse on Old Wyk. Some of these may be a coincidence but I find it interesting. It may seem silly to some. But I believe the most likely truth is that the reason it's hard to make sense of it all is that no one is actually wrong. The most probable truth is that there was a real dragon, there were huge ships they called Dragons. It isn't an attempt to make peace in a debate. I think GRRM had his world's history do this to make it seem harder to believe, yet so fantastic you want to let people believe it because it would be very cool if it was all real dragons. But I think the truth about the Iron Born and the Valyrians, and the Dothraki is hidden in the legends of the Grey King and the history of the Iron Isles. Down to the sacred place for choosing a king of kings where no man may shed blood. It's all the freehold man.

The dragons are always on islands because they are attracted to volcanos. I agree, but I do think Nagga was a ship. At least the ribs because they don’t match the size of the beast and the Grey King just said that to look good. Also how would you defeat that thing? No man could do it. It was huge and lived in the sea, so I don’t really think it ever existed. I’m more of a LML theory fan that what drowned island was massive waves that formed from meteors hitting the oceans and people said it was a sea dragon because they didn’t know what it was.

You make a good point about the attacks always being on the shores. I think the "true history" of Westeros was one without magic. The Others were just outcast tribes of first men. There were no dragons either. There were sea-farers who attacked lands throughout the world. There was no ice wall. But the myths found their way to the hears of the signers, and reality turned into fantasy. There is something, somewhere, that allows the signers to transform legend into reality, and because there is some sort of time-travel where one's consciousness goes back in time (probably Bran), it gets worst and worst every time, as reality becomes ever more fantasy. It's why every myth seems to have a more natural explanation, like comets, earthquakes, volcanoes, etc., and yet there are magic explanations on top. Reality is shifting away from reality because of some source of magic reshaping reality.

However ...I never considered the Seastone Chair actually being petrified "Shade of the Evening Wood". Good call. Absolutely get gorgeous details from your insight. Tying the Nagga's bones theorizing to the Grey King vs Garth/Storm God vs Drowned God parallels you talked about in an earlier video, I would say that Nagga's bones are the remnants of a ship made of weirwood, specifically the weirwood linked to some powerful Children greenseer/chief/king named Nagga (Children and their weirwood trees often being so linked as to being one and the same), who was maybe associated with the Hammer of the Waters catastrophy, and was thus killed by the Grey King in war or retaliation.

I live not far from Heysham in NW England. Off the coast of Heysham, half buried in the mudflats lie the remains of the Finnish ship Vanadis. It sank there in 1903 and its remains look like some great creature's rib cage. Not quite on the scale of the holy Nagga's ribs site, but good evidence for what an old ship might look like.

It almost sounds like The World of Ice and Fire is a post-Ragnarok planet. Most of the heroes of the Dawn Age and their stories, much like the one in this video, are the story of the Norse death of the gods and the renewal of a new world in its aftermath. I know George pulls a lot of ideas from Lovecraft and Norse Mythology, but this video really made me think of that. You’re mention of Sea Dragon Point made me wonder about another location often mentioned by the Ironborn as well as being located near their location. The Stoney Shore came to my mind and with the knowledge that the weirwood trees turn to stone and were most likely cut down to create a ship or ships, makes me wonder if the Stoney Shore is full of stone like “stumps” that might litter the area and having been weathered by time, resemble stones to the current iron men. A little off topic, but I remember reading a chapter in a Feast for Crows, which might have been Theon’s, where he describes the castle/fort of Moat Cailin as he rides up to the door to deceive his own men to earn favor for Ramsey. If I remember correctly, he mentions the swampy area and just how large and massive the stones that make up the fortress are, even the ones that are lying about like ruins and are half sticking out of the murky waters. It’s also mentioned that they are black stone. Is it ever mentioned exactly who built Moat Cailin or what kind of black stone it is made of? If it’s the oily kind, it sounds very much like the descriptions of the materials in their appearance and size that make up Yeen in Sothoryos. Loving this video!

Hey @BiteThis, thanks for watching! Ultimately. I believe the sea battle will be in Oldtown, so if Arya will make it to Oldtown then really anything is possible. I don't think it has to be a "sea dragon" per-say, but possibly the kraken or leviathan. I also think there is a possibility of some sort of sea monster in Braavos. I also agree with Nagga's ribs being a ship, possibly something like Noah's ark, and that the sea levels rised and thats what caused the arm of Dorne to break, and perhaps the "watery halls" are the ruins of an old city like Atlantis, that was flooded over.

Penny for your thoughts, someone no doubt already thought of it, but considering the number of times weirwood roots are compared to snakes and worms, wouldn’t it be funny if Naga was a massive white root moving like a snake in the waters surrounding an island with a grove of weirwoods, like that one forest that’s actually one tree with many offshoots.

Well to me it’s official now! The bones of Nagga are a ship of weirwood! To me the beast Nagga never existed. It would be impossible to slay it because of it’s size and mainly because it’s in the sea. What drowned islands were actually massive waves. LML has a brilliant theory of meteors that caused the long night and some fell into the ocean causing immense waves that would destroy everything in their wake. As the stones came burning from the sky, hit the oceans and produced giant waves, it seems natural people would call it sea dragons and create an angry beast.

Thankyou for this video I just found your channel and am working through your library. For thought: Grey King may be associated to The Shrouded Lord and the grey woman who woke him from stone and ultimately to the magic of the Rhoynar,... The Grey King is from the Empire of the Dawn like Garth (I believe this is a logical conclusion to be drawn from many text based theories) and,.... How big do the weirwood trees have had to have been to create these "ribs", if indeed this is the petrified remains of a ship (I believe that it is) the answer would be incredibly massive and possibly the destruction of these types of trees are the origins of the Westeros Children/Men conflicts.

I wonder if Naga's ribs are a bit of all the possible truths. Yes the Grey King killed a sea dragon. What if the ship he slayed it in didn't quite make it, and he brought it to land and flipped it over and over time or through people it was shaped to look like ribs? And what if the ship he did the slaying in was a weirwood ship? I mean it wouldn't take long for the tales to be shaped into what is now known in the books. A few generations is all that is needed.

If the legends say that the grey king slew naga, could it be that the children made a weirwood ship where they were casting the hammer of water from the sea. The ship was then destroyed by the grey king in a battle and the carcass of that ship became known as naga by the ironborn. It seems reasonable that in order to bring enough water down on the neck, the children needs to have access to huge amounts of water, but do we know if the children even understood shipbuilding?

Im actually taking a break at the moment and have a handful of topucs i plan on doing. I prefer doing theory videos on topics i feel i can provide a contribution to. At least at the moment i dont believe i can contribute to what is currently known about house velaryon... although addam velaryon's trip to the god's eye is quite mysterious and intriguing. Maybe one of these days if i find anything interesting ill be able to do the topic justice.

I think the mention of trees is to paint a picture of how large they are. Also in the real world reptiles have the most sets of ribs snakes have 200 to 400 ribs most animals have a lot less a whale for example has 9 sets of ribs or 18 and they are pretty massive. More than likely it’s some kind of dinosaur like sea snake. Also bones petrify if there not eaten so I believe it’s more of an actual sea serpent for the fact that GRRM has things like giant turtles and dragons mammoths it even mentions things like giant spiders. I believe the weirwood trees are popular because of there appearance and lore but there’s no mention of the children on the iron islands it actually says no one was there till the ironborn first came unlike most of Westeros. The first men just didn’t know how to make ships for sea travel and the children certainly didn’t because if they could they wouldn’t have tried to block Westeros of by flooding the land bridge in the south and later the north. They could have just made ships and left.

it seems more likely to me that Naga is the remains of a ship made of Weirwood. I did fantasize for a minute that Naga was a form of Wyrm - related to Fire Wyrms and Dragons. What if the magical weirwood trees and dragons are related somehow? what if the bones of dragons are the same material as weirwood? some kind of magical material?

One thing I think you are leaving out is the experience of the people who described Nagga's bones as pale trees. Both are native to the iron islands. What else could they possibly describe a large, roughly cylindrical, tall thing? Their experience with trees for boat building combined with their lack of experience for everything else, would limit their ideas about what something looked like or resembled. You wouldn't think it weird if many French people thought a space rocket looked like the Eiffel tower because that's the closest reference they could give. Could be trees, but that bit of evidence seems like a stretch. The rest of the stuff definitely fits the tree theory, but the description part doesnt, in my opinion.

Maybe the fire worms are serpents that gnaw on the weirwood roots like nidhogg, I have the unpopular opinion that dragons are the byproduct of a union between fireworms wyverns and human blood, the krakens might be a water adaptation of wyverns

You gave us a very convincing theory of the connection between the drown god and the old god of the north I think that they must be connected also with the other religions such as Alore or Kazkary as you established a bond between them through the black rock that built this civilizations ((Ashay, stormend, old town, the five castles on the mountain of Esos)). I would like to ask specially for Alore(( god of light))

Fourty four mighty sons for Hugor. Hugor of the Hill, for who the Maid brought forth a girl supple as a willow. Uthor of the Hightower, who married Maris the Maid, maris as in marish, of marshes. Sons armored in iron plate. Who would conquer far away lands. The original Hightower made of timber. A ship made of weirwood. Argoth Stone-skin. The Grey King. Fourty four stones on Nagga's hill. None of this relates to Essos, it's all about the history of Westeros, where people learned agriculture, then iron-working, sea-faring, and so on. Magic didn't exist, until it seeped back in time into history and became real, distorting the past. It's all Bran's fault.
