Valyrian roads are one if the few things left after the destruction of the Freehold. The maps suggest a road was being constructed and later abandoned. let's talk.

Anyone else think the Dragon roads look like constellations? I can’t help but wonder if there is hidden meaning in their shapes.

I have another, more in-universe explanation: Most likely the Valyrians conquered the Festival City, then started building the dragonroad to connect it to the freehold. But the city was ruined as the construction progressed, and the project was thus cancelled, leaving a road to "nowhere".

I love this!! You’ve dug up a gem here for sure. Once they started the road I believe that the Rhoynish came to the same conclusion. When they knew they had no chance they scuttled the city to prevent the Valyrians from linking the north and the south with the east and controlling all of Essos. It all goes back to Essos. To see the future we have to look to the past. This is my favorite topic in ASOIAF right now. Piecing together the ancient history.

Never caught that till now. Tyrion says Chroyanne would tempt the dragons and who is it heavily implied Tyrion glimpsed flying over the Sorrows? Drogon of course! What does it mean? Absolutely nothing, but none of us would be here without our addiction to Easter eggs lol

The maps in The Lands of Ice and Fire must not show all the Valyrian roads. "Myr rises on the mainland, where an ancient Valyrian dragonroad meets the tranquil waters of a vast gulf known as the Sea of Myrth." (page 261)

I believe the destruction of valyria was caused by malevolent magical forces. That's why the ruins of valyria and the dragon roads are untouchable. I think dark magic was used and it's still potent and dangerous. The same kind of dark magic that makes ashaii nearly unliveable, I think ashaii used to be just as great as valyria until some unknown catastrophic magical event caused it to become as it is now.

While listening to your description of Dragon Roads being straight and linking important places I recalled that Ley lines are sometimes called Dragon lines and have similar descriptions, do you think there is any coincidence?
@c.w.8200

I think they're inspired by Roman roads, they were built to last forever and as far as I know also straight.

Excellent catch! Why don't the Stone Men have a cool idol as a god. Like a grey stone dragon or something? I mean there's a super cool oily-black stone toad with nobody worshipping it and these poor fools get nothing? Or do think the Shrouded Lord is their leader, god or both?

Great analysis, i've also wondered about this. The WOIAF book says that Myr is located "where an ancient Valyrian dragonroad on the mainland meets the Sea of Myrth". Could this be yet another abandoned road to Chroyane?

Is it called the Dragon roads because of the dragon's that were there
@TheDisputedLands
@TheDisputedLands 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cheryl! You've got the right idea. The Valyrian roads are called Dragonroads due to the means in which they were made. The roads themselves are made from the same fused stone found on Dragonstone, the walls of Volantis and also the buildings of Valyria itself. We are told the process in which this fused stone is formed is through forging or "fusing" the stone through dragonfire... hence we have "dragonroads".
@rjtalley628

I assumed the roads were exactly straight because they were used as markers for dragon riders so they could navigate from the sky

Great stuff Amanda! It's still curious why Valyria never linked its road system, even with chroyane destroyed. They're cutting themselves off from half the land trade of Essos. My timeline is fuzzy, but we're the rhoynish wars around the Doom?
@alexv3357
@alexv3357 4 жыл бұрын
A while before the Doom, actually. The Second Spice War was around 1,000 years ago
@jamesperkins191
@jamesperkins191 Жыл бұрын
The Doom of Valyria was 112 Before the Conquest. The Rhoynish Wars were ca 700 BC But we don't have any particular records of their construction. For all we know Chorayne was a ruin for 500+ years, with the road being under construction when the Doom came. It might not have been 'abandoned' as such.

It's very telling of the rhoynar not wanting to go to war with the valyrians because the valyrians only tried to destroy them when they needed their lands to build the road compared with the andals who were in the axe further away and were defeated before
@TheDisputedLands
@TheDisputedLands 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The Rhoynish weren't fought out of pure genocidal motives. If this was the case, the Valyrians would have been fighting the Rhoynish before the Andals. The Rhoynish were closer and the Valyrians would most likely have to cross Rhoynish lands in order to get to the Andals. The Valyrians fought the Rhoynish when the Rhoynish became inconvenient.

The Disputed Lands just like the Roman empire it's not a civilacing force but a mercantil centric union only invading places if it was cost effective to do so, I think the economic facets were more important to them considering the valyrians weren't that powerful whilst having dragons build for war
@TheDisputedLands
@TheDisputedLands 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I think the most common misconception is that the Valyrians were some type of superior race that regularly participated in ethnic cleansing for the sake of racial superiority. Rather, they were a greedy civilization that took advantage of opportunities, very much like the Romans... good analogy.

The Disputed Lands well the bravosi seem to be more Intelligent than them, they only seem the best at the facial features and the dragon riding the durrandons and Whatever orys mother was seem more built for combat. I think the empire of the dawn was divided in casts the amethyst emperor's are the ancestors of the valyrians but with wyverns the ancestors of the durrandons and orys mother were the tactical military class the ancestors of the casterlys and Lannisters the bankers and I don't have more. The andals and bravosi came from ghis especially with the quote and then the nights come upon them faceless men clad all in steel from septon meribald speech

I love GRRM and his subtle details, like the perfectly straight Dragon Roads... I mean, they would be, right? It's much easier to make a perfect road when you have an aerial view, you can scout the whole road, avoid obstacles, destroy any unavoidable ones and keep watch over progress from the sky and ensure that it is indeed straight. Dragons would make straight roads much easier, and they would basically be the only ones capable of that massive engineering feat! A simple feature that recognizably screams "Dragon" and couldn't be mistaken for any other road, proof of the power and superiority of Dragon Riders and tamers. Such an amazing detail, insignificant but also profound... that's how GRRM rolls! Edit: Also I just considered it also fits the attitude of a Dragon Rider perfectly as well, to take the perfectly straight path, unobstructed... Dragon Riders have no reason to meander about and could fly over their caravans to watch or protect them with having to keep turning, twisting, and meandering. Nothing stops a Dragon from getting to his destination, not even the very earth itself! Dragons fly in straight lines from A to B, it follows their roads should as well. I'd bet some more entitled and pompous Riders saw following a typical road as demeaning, or below them to bend to the will of a road, and some lowly man who built it. That simply will not do, I'll make my own damn road, perfect, straight, and unfazed by terrain or wildlife... like a Dragon in flight. Pretty cool.

I think they’re straight roads because he based the valyrians on the Romans, who are infamous for their straight and sturdy roads. My apartment stands on a 2,000 year old Roman road that is still in perfect condition today
