Thank you for doing this video Justine! Too often when clothes don't fit properly, we rush to think that there is something wrong with certain parts of our body, when in fact it was a design or production flaw. I really appreciated your perspective.

I've seen a lot of 'haul' videos but this is outstanding. Your garment-maker's eye and knowledge of the industry really felt like i was getting tools to use to evaluate clothes rather than just watching someone try on a garment and see if they 'like' it. More like this, please! Especially a 'good brands' take!

I applaud you in critiquing this company Justine. And this is the exact reason why I will not purchase clothing online. I did try a few years ago and was always disappointed. I like to feel, smell and try on clothing before purchasing it. And reading the care label. Also, so many online companies do not indicate where the garment is made which really annoys me. Good on you!

Excellent video. So eye opening. I’ve never purchased from ASOS and I never will. I love how you called out on the sequin top that the price and the hand stitching don’t add up. A garment worker is being exploited somewhere. Some people may not know that or don’t make the connection.

Most of us can guess the "fast fashion" brands but I"m having more trouble finding ethical/sustainable brands. I can't afford designer items. I'd love to know where to shop and what brands to shop for well-made, ethical, sustainable clothing. A lot of brands aren't very transparent with their sourcing and manufacturing methods.

I've worked for and with producers for ASOS in Bulgaria and UK. They screw the price down to the last cent. In terms of fit and sizing, they have strict tolerances, BUT, their sizing charts are designed to use the minimum amount of fabric. Then there is the fabric. I don't think I've ever been able to use a fabric more than €4/m (we are talking dresses and swimwear). In terms of the 'sequin' top. This would be machine produced fabric on a roll from China, but possibly produced in another factory. It looked so bad, like a mesh top with a few sequins sewn on. They buy in volume to produce in volume. Much of what you are commenting on, is not down to the factory, but ASOS' own buyers and design team. They want the fit, but aren't willing to pay for the fabric cost to make it fit correctly. Endless fit sessions and approval seals, and the buyers are trying to shave 2 cents off here, another cent off there. It is crazy, and a no win situation for producers n terms of development (We like this €16 top you produce wholesale, can we get it for €4?). However, in my experience, the staff are all treated well, paid local average or above wage and the big orders from ASOS mean the factories can produce garments with newer or better machines, better facilities for the workers and often the tight deadlines mean lots of overtime for them too. I hope this helps.

I've bought a few items from their "Curve"(plus size) line and even at 5'4" I find that the waistband always falls right under my bust even though the photos show a waist at normal waist height. For some reason this brand designs even plus size clothing for women who have no chest. It's a pity because I did like some of the heavy fabric for winter dresses.

Inés G.A.T. It’s not nearly as difficult as you might imagine. Especially today, where you have KZbin videos and sewalongs and stuff...so basically a virtual classroom instead of just books with cryptic instructions. Of course it depends, on what you’re going to make...a skirt, simple shirt or sleeveless dress is easiest. Pants are a little more difficult. Adding details like pockets, closures, sleeves and collars adds difficulty and is more time consuming. I would say, that you can become reasonably accomplished in just a couple months, if you put your mind to it and actually look up and follow tutorials to improve your skills. I‘m completely self taught myself...and that was back when there were no resources but books. It’s a lot of fun and very satisfying 🙂

I lived in China for two years, and came across many of the same issues that you mention in your video in clothing I purchased there. Sleeves too short & too narrow, busts too tight, extremely short-waisted clothing, etc. I think this is because of the market for which the clothing is prepared. Chinese women tend to be (though not always!) quite petite, thin arms, short waisted, etc. However, non-Asian bodies do not typically fit this profile. My suspicion would be that Asos clothing is either made in China, or used clothing originally made for the Chinese market. Also, I really appreciate your videos, Justine! So informative ☺️

Interesting video, I'd like to see the same kind of analysis on ethical brands, since the pricetag can be quite high and I'd love to know if the quality would justify it. I'm a pear too. In tops I usually wear XS/S and L on the bottom. Anything but skater skirts usually don't fit me. With leggings I always go for the biggest size available, just to make sure the fabric doesn't have to stretch too much, so it won't become see-through. Also speaking of leggings, do you happen to know any ethically produced thick leggings that are suitable for German winter, I still have some Primark ones that will probably be fine next winter and maybe the one after that, but I eventually need something to replace them with.

You can't expect great quality of polyester considering the price. ASOS have different lines, different price levels. I do purchase a lot on ASOS but I do rarely buy their clothes. The line I've tried was ASOS WHITE, the fabric - cashmere. Quality was one of the best on the market for the price, and the price was very reasonable. If your figure is beyond the standard you should consider the fact, that you'll have to adjust the item for the best personal fit.

Before stopping to buy fast fashion I occasionally ordered from ASOS but generally I had to return everything but one or two garments because they always look waaaay better in the pictures. Which still seem to be the case! ASOS knows how to do ecommerce well, but as a fashion designer if I was part of the design team I would be ashamed to put out so badly made garments. I realize now the rise of cheap badly produced things like this really what did put me off working in the fashion industry in the past.

This was a very USEFUL video. I have already given up on buying on-line from any companies except LLBean and Lands End, and only their Tall sizes (and I am at least 2 inches shorter than you, Justine). Their clothes are not at all fashionable, but they are sturdy, well made, of good natural fabrics, and a bit expensive. I hope the extra expense translates into living wages for the garment workers, but that is very hard to know. When I want a more fashionable garment, I either sew it myself or go to Talbots. Even at Talbots, I can only buy separates because every dress is too short.

The good thing about ASOS is that you can send everything back as it can be really hit or miss. I have ordered a bunch from their website, though a lot of the items where actually from other brands they retail. Still, I have a couple of favourites from their inhouse brand. Generally their knitted items are 'safer' in quality, two of my favourite jumpers are ASOS, also hoodies, t-shirts, socks and so on will rarely disappoint. But I also have a winter coat that I really love from ASOS white, which is more of a premium line I guess. One of my favourite skirts is ASOS too, and a blazer in a boyfriend cut that as far as I can tell has no quality issues at all. Of course Justine challenged the brand by testing some more 'complicated' items as that is where quality issues and bad tailoring will become most visible. That makes complete sense, but you can still find some very decent clothes at ASOS if you know what to avoid, namely clothes that simply need a higher level of tailoring to be good.

question is, who can afford non fast fashion items? Seriously asking you. And in a lot of cases private 'boutiques' will offer the same cheap quality Chinese mass produced clothes, just priced even higher. I can't afford to pay 300 euros for a top or 400 euros for a dress. At this part of Europe, a lot of people earn around 600 euros A MONTH.

Don't know which part of Europe you are in, but I live in Hungary, wages are similar here and not many decent clothing stores. I often buy great quality items in second hand stores. This winter i bought 100% cotton and wool sweaters for about 5 euros each, they look amazing and people often compliment on them, lol.

Try not to buy famous brands. Go to shop that sell various items that are non branded. In Portugal we have a lot of textil factories that sell to those shops part of the production . The rest is exported to other countries, where they just put brand tags on it and are sold for ridiculous amounts of money.

On etsy you can find Taylors from other countries with lower living costs so you can find pants for 70€ there. For basics I go to stores that market to whole families. Their customers tend to be more critical of fabrics AMD want to wear the garments for more than one season so even if it's not High quality it's usually a lot more decent than any trendy Brand.

I thought ASOS was a legit, high-quality brand up until I received clothes from them. I ordered a ruffle top that looked thick and flowy with several layers of fabric....what I received was three thin strips sewn onto a cheap mesh with uneven sleeve ruffles. The long-sleeved crop top I ordered was the thinnest material I've ever felt, too. You can see the model's pasties through the fabric. I thought it was kind of suspicious that ASOS doesn't allow you to leave reviews on their products. Their clothes are so cheap and low quality!

I've ordered several things at ASOS a year ago and wasn't dissapointed at all. The clothes looked exactly like they did on their website and (except for one pair of pants) fit me perfectly. The difference between you an me is, that I ordered clothings from the mens section. Yuk! You are definitely not an ASOS girl Justine!! Me either! From what I've seen it's ok for poor uni students who wear big coats or skinny minis who look good in anything! Here in Australia I feel we are all getting fed up with cheap Chinese junk like ASOS stuff and there is a definite trend with youngsters buying heaps of stuff in op shops or vintage shops!! I have a friend who is in tv (wardrobe) she trawls the vintage and second hand shops for good labels and takes them home to redesign! You'd never guess!! I love your videos! Thank you so much! ashestoyoursoul poorly fitted clothes don't look good on anyone, but being skinny does make people think you look better in almost anything. I personally don't like "street fashion", and think most of it is ugly. Skinny girls wearing it are always heralded as fashion icons, but most of these looks don't look good on bigger people (tbh anyone who isn't built like a model) and a fat girl would be called dumpy and unprofessional wearing it. Not attacking you, but size definitely impacts availability of clothes that fit you and how people think clothes look on you

While I agree with the concerns about ethics and quality, I believe that fit is another matter. We all have different body types and the sizing guide is usually a good predictor of the brand being a good fit for your particular body or not. The dresses were not from the tall range, so I find it unfair to say they’re not well tailored for not fitting a taller woman. I’m not a huge ASOS fan, but I think that one thing that makes them popular is having Tall, Petite and Plus size lines with a vast selection. They even have a small Full Bust section.

As a plus size woman it is really difficult to find clothes that are fashionable and affordable, ASOS is one of the few shops which caters to this need. I think most people would buy better quality clothing that fit if they could afford it (or if it was made; plus size clothing is normally overpriced and poor quality) I agree with your points made but I think it is important to recognise that not everyone has the luxury of being able to afford better quality garments or being able to buy them even if they have the money, in the case of plus size people.

I totally agree Linda, I would too! In an ideal world, I would love to make my own clothes but I just don't have the time (or skill hahaha). I think plus size people are often left out this type of conversation because people do not understand how challenging it can be to even get clothes that fit, let alone those that are ethically sourced. Price point and availability I think should have been referenced in this video because lots of people might agree with the politics but shop at places like ASOS out of necessity, not choice.

A thing that bothered me about the video (and usually from every video reviewing asos) is how people don't pick what will be more flattering to them. Is always bodycon dresses and weird stuff, those hardly ever look good. Justin obviously has a long torso, the red dress was a little off, but why would you not adress your own body type. Also, the red dress was weird from the photo, the balloon sleeves, were unflattering. The black dress looks good enough. If you are a 20 something struggling with money, and you have a wedding/event/whatever, it looks like it's a dress that could save your ass. Also, if you are buying from an Online retailer (or even at the mall) small alterations will always help your clothes look better. It's impossible to have a perfect fit, specially on a budget. I would love to see a video reviewing classic stuff / holy grails, things that would be hard to fuck up. Im a size us14, i carry my weight ono my hips, i have chubby arms, short torso and small waist. I know to buy skater / Line A dresses. I know to buy stuff with longer sleeves, i know i get hot easily, so i buy usually cotton / light fabrics. And i hardly see that kind of stuff reviewed or recommended. It's always, i bought a dress with the weirdest cut/material ever, i wonder why it doesnt looks good! ive bought asos stuff for years, and when buying for my body type focusing on cut and fabric, its usually worth it. It's common sense, stay away from over the top stuff, stiff fabrics and also, every item in asos includes a small video of the model doing a runway walk, you can see how the fabric behaves there, if it's too sheer or if it clings to their butts. I know i look like asos pays my bills or something, but honestly, that company saved my ass when i started working and was broke as a joke. I was able to get cute affordable plus size clothes, and (as im mexican) if the order didnt make it, they always refunded me no questions asked. I know they have some questionable stuff, but their customer service is usually on point. I think the video didnt make them justice.

AlePolait she didn't choose then for her body fit, she chose them because they were meant to have some features that she could check for quality (darts, lacing etc)
@alepolait6 жыл бұрын
My main complaints -Not using or even mentioning all the tools the site gives to you (in the info, there are all the measurements, materials, what size the model is wearing and her height and weight and they have a small video of each item so you can see how the fabric behaves) -Not addressing her own personal body type. If you have a specific "issue" (big belly, long torso, short torso, huge boobs, small boobs, broad shoulders, narrow hips, big hips) most of her complaints were about fit, but she never didnt even tried to shop for her body. Just one click and she could see that "oh, that red dress looks weird, that top looks way to short for me, because the model is walking and i can see her belly") You can do both. You can shop for weird materials, while actually giving it a chance. Specially in a site like ASOS that have tons of stuff. If you look for: lace, bodycon, or embellished there are way too many options to choose from. It just bothers me that she chose items that were obviously going to fail. A lot of her points couldve been adressed if she actually just used the tools the page gives to you. As i said, if she has a long torso, its obviously a thing to consider while buying stuff!! i have a short one, and if im not careful the "waist" of clothing usally hits me at my belly and i look huge! The video was just very negative and didnt show a real effort to make it work.

I just feel like if you check the photos, for instance that pink beaded top you can instantly see that it has no lining and the beads are cheap sequins so I didn't buy it. The Black dress' weird waistline was popular for a while and a trend waistline not a classic just like the bagginess of the holo sequin cami.
