I'm going to add to his list. I've been a runner for years then I stopped got up to 220lbs. I started running again and could not get the weight off. I completely took out sugar in my drinks of all kind and only consume drinks with zero calories....I lost 30lbs. it works.

And there are times when I can't tolerate hunger at all. Sometimes my cravings seem to almost drive me. Most often in those times they come right after a meal. So having a cup of diet soda usually does the trick for me. In regards to this Video I don't really care all that much about aspartame because I prefer suclarose. I try to avoid sacharin.

It's probably because smoking and alcohol doesn't have an alternative perceived to be lower risk. Well smoking does with vaping but vaping seems to get a lot of the same skepticism as artificial sweeteners, although those do have a bit more of a foundation. Some people want to believe this *artificial chemical* which makes things sweet with no down side is too good to be true and that natural sugar is alright because well it comes from nature and it does have a known downside. Stick with the devil you know type of deal.

Thanks as always Layne because I'm now even less worried about aspartame. I've been using loads of various artificial sweeteners (although TBH not much aspartame) for decades in coffee, soft drinks and home-cooked baked treats without ever experiencing negative effects. To the contrary, since mostly quitting sugar over 5 years ago I slowly lost 40kg and have since added 10kg of muscle while maintaining body fat percentage. Other permanent lifestyle changes such as plenty of vigorous exercise (cardio and weights), much healthier eating/cooking and quitting smoking/drinking have been also key in drastically improving my physical and mental health, however without artificial sweeteners I'd probably still be eating sugar, be overweight if not obese and very unhappy.

I was also worried when this "blew up", but then I just looked up the information about it, and was less worried. Aspartame is one of the MOST tested food additives and has been used since the early 1980s. If all those overweight people who switched from sugary drinks to aspartame-sweetened drinks were to switch back, there would be a MUCH higher health risk. It's irresponsible to scare people into doing something that is more unhealthy. Yes, aspartame isn't "good" for you (most things aren't), but the amount of bad is so much less compared to the alternative: sugar.

That's just a LOT of soda PERIOD. Why randomly blame one specific ingredient? I would argue that so much "fizzy liquid" by itself is more harmful than Aspartame due to things like blocking absorption of certain minerals or leeching calcium or whatever else. I rarely drink even two 12oz cans, and many days I drink none at all. Maybe one with lunch or dinner. I can't even imagine downing 2 liters every single day, or even your 2x 20oz. That's just a lot no matter how you slice it. But you can't just pick a random ingredient and blame that. It might have had nothing to do with soda at all. It could just be genetic predisposition. Or maybe his desire for so much soda was actually a sign of his body wanting some other kind of nutrient? You might get genetic testing just to see if you have similar predispositions.

Their reasoning being some old person smoked 3 packs a day for their whole life and didn’t get cancer, but ignore the millions that did.
