It’s called rhythm. When you stim you’re seeking rhythmic movement to self sooth. Rhythm calms us down because we heard our mother’s heartbeat when we were unborn. Rhythm is comforting because it stimulates that feeling that our mother gave us.

I have to say that im 31 and have never found a group of people that I relate to like this. Youre vids have serously helped me so much in finding words to describe my behavour and to realize my misunderstanding of autism has been the only reason I never looked into it to begin with. Again no way I could show how thankful I am.

Recently I've found out I'm on the spectrum. It explained a lot about me, from stimming to special interests. And you know, I labeled myself as an weird introvert until I found out about Aspergers. I felt extremely unlucky, but at the same time I felt thankful for my talent in language (English is not my native language), ability to hyperfocus etc. Never got diagnosed with Asperger's, even when my parents were concerned the doctors told I was fine because I didn't have intellectual disability. Anyways, thank you for introducing me to Asperger's syndrome. Finally I can get some explanation about myself.

I’ve always seen my son’s stimming as a way of tuning out other distractions around him. When it’s hard to filter sensory stimulation, a small action like finger rubbing or pacing back and forth can lessen the sensory input and allow him to focus better. It’s amazing how the brain compensates.

I'm 40 and being a physics teacher, we go through a lot of training about ASD. Every time we discuss traits, I fully recognise that I am 100% high functioning ASD. It explains a lot about my personality and "quirks", and funnily enough, the kids I seem to gel most with are those ASD ones. It makes no difference to me, besides the fact that I can understand myself and others better. I guess it also gives a little comfort knowing that it's not strange to be "nerded" into something. When I find something interesting, I will throw myself at it full time. I guess that's what lead me to my career path and I hope to help and inspire kids in a similar position. Let's be Frank, all of the game changing physics and mathematicians are clearly another level ASD. it's almost a super power that the general population doesn't appreciate until 100 years later. I'm not implying in Einstein, but those guys were very misunderstood in thier days, yet today, we all reap the benefits of what they learned.

For me, its not so much about routine as ritual. I have only realized late in life that I am autistic and there was no room for my routine when I was growing up so I developed rituals that took the place that the comfort (for lack of a better term) that routine could have occupied.

@@arandomunknownuser I had to have the same things in my pockets every day--and I would check them ritually. I used to travel a lot, so different places and the first thing I did when I arrive was set up a picture and a few things beside wherever I was sleeping and then go for a walk around the neighbourhood (no matter what time it was). I needed to know the neighbourhood and pick out the place that I would have a hot beverage in the morning.

Repetitive behavior and stimming yes! I keep all my stuff in the same place and my day progresses the exact same way as the others. I got alarms and stuff too. A difference in activity confuses me a lot, almost disoriented, and I get anxious fast. As for stimming, I chew a lot whenever I think and it really helps me process my thoughts actually. I also have rings to fiddle with and I love rocking! This was a great vid, thanks!

My son does very few stims that aren't vocal. He is massively into hooting and banging stuff (age 10) at the mo. Also he can use perfect inflection of tones etc, unless tired, stressed, or overwhelmed, or in any new situation. Then he goes into monotones. Thanks so much for your videos. They are so jolly and helpful. I have a lot of ADHD traits, but not enough that it has ever been very hard for me, except the insomnia and speaking in an unfiltered way. But your videos are so great, cos you talk fast enough that I don't have to speed them up. We hey!! Nice and speedy 😂❤

Great list! Social interaction issues: 👍 Repetitive behaviour: 👍 Stimming: 👍 (esp. in my younger years, although I catch myself rocking when super focused on certain things, esp when doing EFT) Monotone talking: I'd like to think I've trained myself well and am not too monotone... Literal thinking: 👍 (the other day, had a student teacher tell me she was doing her first FX. Brain goes: " FX... Effects? No, no, field experience. Oh. But it's not in a field...")

I smiled when you spoke about learning by TV how to speak less monotone, because TV is a great teacher for me. I exercise to look in the eyes (it doesn't work a lot by now), I observe the social interactions and try to find the meaning of their faces expression, sometimes repeat a few words to exercise to be less monotone. It improves but i was in long therapy with 3 different psychologists, and 2 psychiatrists. It was very helpful (I wasn't diagnosed yet) except each of them almost felt asleep sometimes. It hurts, I didn't know why, because they were great and helped a lot with my chronic depression and huge anxiety. I speak very quickly, monotone, and sometimes about things that doesn't ihterest no one. 😕

Could you explain what a meltdown is? I may get those but it’s bot common in my fam so I’m not sure, i would really like to know. Can you tell if a meltdown is coming? What is overstimming like? (Just honest question btw not trying to be rude sometimes things come off that way) I’ve lived through childhood trauma so I’m piecing lost pieces of myself together to try and understand myself. Idk how trauma affects being neurodivergent but I’m fairly certain I’m dyslexic other than that idk much and long info dump videos are super hard to sit and watch+ lists are too vague.

My brother has Down Syndrome and is also on the autism spectrum. Routine is SUPER important to him. When the pandemic hit, he had a LOT of issues with it, and it caused several behavioral issues. When his workplace opened back up he went back for a bit, and then for some reason just decided he didn't want to go to work anymore. It took months to get him willing to go back one day a week. Then we moved up to two days a week. Now we've just gotten to three days a week. We're just happy he's back at work, with his friends, because we know he thrives on that.

I was diagnosed when I was 38, I'm 53 now. I can relate to all of these. When I was assessed I just got told I had it. There was no support or information given to me by anyone. I was just left to find out things for myself. I spent alot of time in the library. My 2 main stims are rolling my thumbs and jiggling my leg. People used to physically stop me. I felt terrible for doing it because it annoyed my friends. I've managed to explain to friends now that stimming is soothing and comforting for me. They stopped correcting me.

I have a spreadsheet which details what I 'should' be doing each waking hour of each day, working and non-working. I go on the breaks same time, start and end at same time on working days. After work I watch the same shows from 20:00 onward in a set order. It gives me a routine but it also focuses me as it tells me what I am meant to be doing or I slip off and spent to long thinking what I should be doing.

I first like to say that I find your program educational as well as entertaining. I watched a program on testing for autism. It inspired me to take about every test for everything. I have been diagnosed by a doctor with ADHD, anxiety, and depression. I have not been officially diagnosed with dyslexia but I know I do have that. I found that the test for autism was odd because sometimes I qualified and sometimes I didn’t. I think all the tests I took failed in the fact that it asks you how often you do something but not why. I like routine and structure but not for the same reason that a person with autism may like it. Keep up the good work.

Hey 👋 I just ran across your channel the other day, and things are starting to make a lot more sense, I’m realizing things I have done my whole life and was criticized on, are maybe just signs of me being on the spectrum. Ex: I watched the same set of tv shows, I watched the same movie every night for well over a year when I was younger, until someone commented, and I just changed what movie it was... I love listening to the same song 🎧, I have various stims, I never know when it’s my turn to speak. I’m constantly interrupting, I am a very literal thinker and have spent years watching and observing sarcasm and various phrases, but anything new goes right past me... sorry for the rant.. I just have some clarity for the first time in my life, yet so many questions

yeep, i used psycho-self analysis and hypnosis/meditation to trouble shoot and yep its asphergers. just had to stress my own brain out to trouble shoot my problems and force real mindful self awareness of my asphergers. i still know nothing, selective memory so it only comes when i need it butnive had to teach my brain i dont know when i need it inherently, therefore convincing by unconvincing my sub-conscious in control. ive trained my ego to train my impulse and therefore givimg me full control over my mind for the most part which allows me to change and grow as person. also took a shit tonne of LSD in the past which helped with the inherent self awareness.

Your videos and channel are fascinating. It’s interesting after only three months following a depression and relationship break up that it has been suggested that I may have Cyclothymia and/or high functioning autism traits… I do have traits including - Stims Obsessed behaviour Some social interaction issues Logical comprehension Hyperlexia Dyslexia - handwriting, B’s and D’s, spelling Issues with mathematics mostly mental arithmetic (yet I’m fine with algebra and calculus) I do eat food in order ???? Is that a thing??? I will eat vegetables in order (can be random) but I will eat all the carrots, then cauliflower, the parsnips, peas etc.. I will then eat the meat and lastly potatoes… But most times I just eat what ever is infront of me??? I can be flustered for words on emotional topics. BUT I’ve also found that all these traits ties in with MBTI INTP personality type… So all very interesting

And many autistic people find it and functioning labels (which the title aspergers is as its deemed more "high functioning") offensive as its routed in eugenics and was coined by a nazi to divide autistic people into people who they could exploit for work (high functioning or aspergers) and people they would kill instead (low functioning or autistics). Chloe Hayden has recently stepped away from her Princess Aspien title for this exact reason.

And yet some of us may find the old Asperger's distinction still useful to some degree because, let's be honest, the autism spectrum is incredibly broad, and it helps to identify the differences within the spectrum. While there are those who do have not many support needs, and their ASD is essentially a difference in the way of thinking, there are also those who are rather disabled by autism, and are non-verbal and have severe learning difficulties. A large portion of the autism community seems to find that labelling it all 'one and the same' and without any other labels is fine, but it doesn't help to describe the differences within the spectrum. Mild, moderate and severe are real. So are Levels 1, 2 and 3.

It's officially outdated, but expresses far better where a person is on the spectrum than ASD does. Removing the classification is, to me, like saying, "Lions are just a form of cat. We're going to call them cats from now on. 'Lion' is no longer a valid classification." I've worked with level 1 ASD students in the same class. The one was clearly an Aspie with some learning difficulties (while still quite smart), the other a more classic autistic with cognitive delays. Using the levels to pinpoint people on the spectrum isn't really helpful, imo.

Hi, do you find that growing up as a teenager personal hygiene was an issue? My son has no idea why he needs to shower and brush teeth etc

I have an issue that you may be able to help me with. I have recently been through an intensive diagnosis process through the local authority. Two 'life history' appointments with a social worker, full ADOS 4 assessment and 1 appointment with a psychiatrist (plus ASQ and EQ tests) -- the psychiatrist seemed to be looking for comorbidity and mental health issues, rather than ASD. They said there wasn't enough early developmental evidence to give a full diagnosis, in spite of matching a multitude of traits, a matching life history and my ADOS 4 coming back positive -- according to the shrink, my meltdowns weren't severe enough and my evidence of special interests didn't manifest enough (I was biting my tongue trying not to talk about photography). What to do next, leave it, let go and move on, or fight it and continue to obsess over them being incorrect? Meh!

I don’t need a fidget toy, I use a tv show or music running in the background to stim, even when sleeping.

. Repetitive behavior FTW !!! Same breakfast [check] Same video games [check] If you could see my STEAM account, I've played Warhammer 40k Dawn of War (series) EVERY which way you can with EVERY possible outcome. Mass Effect series (minus Andromada) EVERY which way you can... seriously. And don't get me started in KoTOR and KoTOR2. I have over 450 titles, on STEAM, but only play 42 of them, repeatedly, because I enjoy the story or game play.

The world is constantly changing. Rigid, fixed routines cannot remain the same indefinitely. If you eat the same food, what do you do if the Manufacturer decides to discontinue the product? If you catch the same bus, sometimes it breaks down, and you have to use alternatives. Your home might be your safe place, but it might burn down, or you might have to leave if you're renting. The point is that some change is good. If you're earning $40k per year, you might get a job that due to your unique Asperger's traits you excel at, and may earn $60k per year. Which means buying whatever you want. whenever you want.

Not for me, besides that's not "stopping" stimming because chewing is still a self stimulatory behavior. There's no reason to not stim, so why stop it? It's a healthy coping mechanism among other things
