Niccolò Paganini was famous for his impassioned music. His interpritaion was not always note perfect, but was so beautiful that his performance became definative for a generation. Crowds went wild at his concerts. Young women passed out and fell from second story windows as his carriage drove by. Lets give Mr Ray Chen the credit he deserves. His music is bright, fun and very engaging. Having heard The Four Seasons for two thirds of a century, this stands out. Don't miss his performances.

It's what happens when a great artist shares themselves with their audience. Many years ago, I watched a documentary covering a piano competition; many young and very talented artists looking to make it big. A few of the pianists were filmed during a break, discussing amongst themselves how they should present their respective performances; _strict technical correctness_ versus _emotion and passion driving their playing (believe it or not),_ which clearly implied that one could only play "properly" if they did not let emotion get in the way... and vice versa. Their discussion made me a little sad... and a little angry: I'm not a musician, but I had always thought that to be a worthy soloist, ensemble player, or even a principal player in an orchestra, one had to attain virtuosity, and that virtuosity could not exist without impressive technical skills _and_ a passion -- almost necessarily unrestrained -- for what one is playing... with passion (in my view) needed to lift the music beyond what's printed on the music sheet. It's obvious that Mr. Chen's wonderful presentation of "Summer" is due to his passion for what he is playing.

OMG Ray Chamber music Chen is so much fun! Such a character and he brings out the character of the other musicians as well. I always love how expressive Ray is when he plays because it helps us interpret the possible meaning behind the music the way he does, its important. There will always be an argument as to who was technically the best violinist of this generation, and he is squarely in that argument. But in terms of best soloist/performer, performing with character and expressivity, with interpretations that enhance the music and his personality, Ray has it hands down!

Ray Chen is 35 years old and he went to the Curtis Institute of Music. He is not an aspiring artist. He is a Master at the violin. Being Asian contributes to his path to mastery. It amazes me that those who are not musicians make believe they know and comment nonsense about him. I am a 70 year old musician. I am not a violinist but a Flautist who has played in orchestras and loves and appreciates the violin. His ability and passion are tantamount to a perfect performance.

Keep your eyes and ears on Rei Chen - he’s already a world class violinist - but perhaps one should have lent him an ‘arc’ bow from c. 1730 not the modern ‘flat’ bow from after 1773 - it not only requires different bowing skills (no doubt a quick-study for Chen) but also produces a distinctly ‘warmer’ tone especially if ‘catgut’ strings are used over any of the sleek modern metal ones-also the A should be tun’d down from A=440hz ‘standard’ pitch (more-or-less ratified internationally after 1956) to something akin to A=410-415 that Vivaldi himself would have recognis’d and wrote for in the Venice of 1730s - why should a great talent like Mr Chen waste his energies on oxymorons ?
