Cotillard's whole conflict with Irons seemed to be that she wasn't getting credit. He was taking lines from her speeches, I guess? She didn't seem to be someone who gave speeches herself, so what was he going to do, name-drop her in mid-speech? And the tacked-on bit at the end with "Oh, you'll have your time soon." And Fassbender. Wow, yeah, we know he was living in hiding in Mexico as a kid, and then he ran from the police/Abstergo and then just became an adult who had killed a pimp. His whole attitude towards violence, the murder victim, anything? All we have is Cotillard saying "You killed a man," and him correcting her to "pimp." It seemed like they were going for some kind of idea of embracing his genetic destiny as an assassin, which is A)not the side of free will the movie claims he's fighting for, and B)some Nazi-myth level blood destiny bullshit. The other assassins reminded me of the side characters in something like Terminator: Salvation, where they make one quip or glare at somebody and the movie then cinematically goes, "Well, we've shown you this character now. Moving on." But then there's the flat-out dumbest moment in the movie, where Fassbender at this point realizes that he's the last link to Aguilar's line, and he knows Abstergo is planning to end the general concept of free will/violence/aggression, but they give him an assassin's blade and try to goad him into stabbing his father. The movie just kind of hopes you don't notice he could shank himself like his mother did and ruin their evil plans on the spot. Does he value his life too much to do that? I don't know, some character traits might have shed light on that.
@FoldingIdeas7 жыл бұрын
See, that's why it was so confusing is that half the conversation seemed to be about not getting credit, but then she's pretty much denouncing the entire plan?!
@RZPolaris47 жыл бұрын
Yes, it didn't make any sense at all. Her denunciation or his "you always were a scientist first."
@spicysalmon85907 жыл бұрын
She wanted credit for the animus and to use the apple to purge violent thoughts from people, while her father and the templars wanted to use the apple for ending the assassins/free will.
@FoldingIdeas7 жыл бұрын
Holy crap... that... wait... those weren't the same thing? Like, jeez, the whole time I just assumed "get rid of violence" was her happy-thoughts euphemism because that's exactly the kind of "save you from yourself" logic that always underpins these kinds of plots. The fact that those were actually separate goals did not parse at all (not helped by the fact that the Apple's functionality is never explained with that level of granularity). Wow.

@AnnDVine7 жыл бұрын
There's a difference between "fun" and "jokey," which is actually the mistake Marvel keeps making. I'd say, of those sorts of films, the X-Men series has done the best job at being a fun movies that don't inherently treat their content as ridiculous, at least within fiction. The internal logic is never questioned or drawn attention to, but the characters are still broadly cartoonish and entertaining. Hell, Marvel comics themselves have had the formula right for decades! So, don't mistake "fun" or "self-aware" with "comedic". That sort of thinking is what leads to Marvel movies, it's not gonna prevent them.

Not necessarily, plenty of games lead to interesting universes that spill into other media. But they all need crazy budgets for special effects, and nobody wants to risk money on a game that isn't in the public consciousness (eg WoW). I mean, they're able to make great movie adaptations of books, and great book adaptations of games, but rarely movie adaptations of games.

To be honest, while I'm well aware this is a broken movie with many, many issues, I still really enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting too much out of it after seeing the trailers and I didn't expect much going into the movie. I came out feeling like I got my money's worth because I was watching it purely to see Assassin's Creed on the big screen. And that's what I got. Assassin's Creed on the big screen. I expected to go "Durr hurr, he said Apple of Eden and the Apple of Eden was in the gaaaaames" and "He's gonna do the leap of faith and the leap of faith was ALSO in the gaaaaames" and you get the idea. And I think by going in purely with those expectations, knowing full well I was going to be watching a broken, badly edited, in-coherent film, it allowed me to take it at face value and enjoy it for what it was. A film set within the universe of Assassin's Creed.

Never quite realized how much Assassins Creed and Westworld broadly had in common. Similarly, I kinda think a similarly mysterious tv show set in the AC universe would work well. There's just too much there for a movie, which is why there are nearly 20 AC games now, or something like that.

I keep coming back to this video because it hurts me how much they failed with this movie. I don't like the games but I still think that the story is interesting and the concept lends itself for a movie perfectly. They could have easily made a good, dumb fun, videogame movie if they weren't so focused on the wrong things. Side note, the only point I liked about the movie was actually a change they made. The animus redesign looks dope. It fits the "it's so dumb and I love it" vibe that the series goes for with the genetic memory stuff.

You are right about one thing: the framing device for the games is pretty darn stupid in and of itself, but audiences were willing to overlook that because every other aspect had such an incredible amount of heart put into it. The environments were full of intricacies in the mannerisms of the populations and accuracies in the artifacts that made the world feel both alive and authentic. If you interacted with a historical figure, you spent a lot of time with them to see just why they were so important. Even when you just boot the game up, the first ten seconds are devoted to telling you how many people worked on the game simply so that you could see the parts of history they cared so much about. It doesn't forgive the dumb overall story, but it's inspiring to see a dumb story done so smart. However, we're talking about the movie here, and I think it's here where the film really falters. They focus so much on the silly framing device and miss the chance to give the audience an immersive look into the time period. We're never in the Animus long enough to appreciate the attention to detail (not that there was much anyways- the camera never stays still and the color palette remains a consistently dull mud brown.) The only real character you remember is Christopher Columbus, and it's not because he was as important to the plot as ACII's Leonardo da Vinci or ACIII's George Washington - if it was any other name, you wouldn't give a second thought. There's no insight into religion, science, or why any of the events matter - it's obvious from the start that they're just there to pad the runtime. I'm not going to pretend like "Assassin's Creed" is the best franchise ever, but they had a lot of potential to tell some great stories that, unfortunately, the official film never lived up to.
@ethanritterbusch89102 жыл бұрын
the other problem is that the framing device is silly, but that’s okay if the games are light-hearted badass power fantasy. A silly framing device doesn’t work with this pitch dark tone the movie was going for.

Dude, Floof's got a mean streak. Attention or blood! I agree with the thesis, but I do have one nitpick. At the end of the movie, it seemed to me like the camera time was moved to Cotillard because it was setting her up to be the next villain. It was like they were showing her transition from "don't really care about the assassins either way" to "the assassins have to be stopped". And given that they established some sort of weird love/hate/capture dynamics between Cal and Cotillard (or at least it seemed like they did), I guess the idea is that the sequel's villain and the sequel's hero have feelings about each other that complicate their motivations or something? It's confusing because it probably won't get a sequel (the movie still hasn't become profitable, but the China release is only in February and this weekend is its first in a bunch of European countries). Even if it did, who's gonna want to uncan this mess. A big part of me thinks that they probably should've stuck with the video game canon instead and told a story in _that_.

Three things that would have instantly improved this film: 1) set it in the same universe as the game. 2) change the ratio between the two storylines, and link them together thematically to resolve inner conflict in the main character 3) linked to point one, use the previous storylines as the backstory. Rather than that abysmal block of text at the beginning that describes the backstory, use live action remakes of relevant clips from the games to SHOW us these moments

Just saw it today, then decided to finally see this. The story's fine, in the sense that Callum and Sofia have kind of definitive arcs, whether you recognize it or not. What's wrong is definitely the camera work, editing, and definitely the lines. God it's so stupid. Plus, some details are really idiotic and illogical. Like: 1) Why the fuck doesn't Cal's dad actually try to protect his wife and son? Maybe run away, THEN he can kill them if he fails? 2) Why does Callum want to destroy the Creed by helping Sofia, then suddenly change his heart after only seeing his mom and ancestors? What the fuck does that do to his psyche? Do we have to buy that his mom changes him in 10 secs? 3) Why do the guards not have better weapons, in a camp full of people with special techniques? 4) Why the hell does his dad have anything to do in the camp, if Cal's mom is who matters? Her lineage is what matters, not his husband's. 5) Why does Callum foam, after the jump? Is it because he doesn't fully participate? If so, how the hell can we ensure and measure people's participation? It's too flimsy. Instead, how about we use the REAL Animus where you don't get hooked up to a tentacle and explain de-sync as bits and pieces of memories unable to connect due to the lost DNA sequences? Cal has tiny development. Aguilar has even less development, and this is a bigger crime. I think his love interest doesn't even have a name. The motives are not explained coherently. The actions are filmed terribly. There's no pay-off to some of the seeds. The dialogues are shitty. The villain's scheme is so unimaginably stupid and vague. The assassins have no disguise, no smart weapon usage, the character's choices are idiotic. Oh my God.

Hoàng Minh Ngô Vũ I firmly believe that seeing a movie about Callum's Dad on the run protecting his wife and son would have been far superior to the one we got. And yeah his change of heart made no sense.

That's almost exactly what I expected out of this... although I had a little bit of hope due to Fassbender - most of movies with him are rather good or at least OK.

I just came here after watching the vlog for The Book of Henry and it was fun to go back in time and see Amy get younger, and also know that the tendencies we see here will stay with her into adulthood. (From TBoH vlog: "Ow, no biting.")

u shudnt let your kitty climb u, when she's older she's gonna unintentionally hurt u and you'll get angry about it and she won't understand why. i taught my kitty not to use claws on me when she was very little and by the time she was 1 she didn't have to use her claws to jump on my shoulders and balance her body there without hurting me

Do you think it would be possible someone (maybe aronofsky?) to make a good Specops: the line movie, or is that game especially unadaptable?
@FoldingIdeas7 жыл бұрын
No, I would actually say that The Line is particularly adaptable, especially if the producers are willing to go significantly more surrealist with it. You would lose out on some of the specifics that make The Line work so well as an interactive experience, but there's more than enough meat on those bones to carry a film. This is, naturally, helped immensely by The Line's pedigree as an all but direct adaptation of Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now. I mean, you would essentially just be making a modern Apocalypse Now with a surrealist bent, but I can think of a lot of worse ideas for movies that have been made just this year.
@srfrid7 жыл бұрын
Folding Ideas I disagree, Spec Ops is at its core the relationship we have with videogames. Sure, its foundation lies on war literature, mainly of course Heart of Darkness, but the game uses that to talk about the medium and us. A movie about war that's actually about the relationship that we have with videogames is not feasible to me.
@FoldingIdeas7 жыл бұрын
But that wasn't the question. As I already said, many of the specifics that make The Line work so well as an interactive experience would be lost, but the game isn't exclusively about those things, and there's more than enough there to translate into an effective, engaging expression within another medium. In fact I would argue that a savvy screenwriter could just as well adapt the story of Captain Walker to be about the voyeurism inherent in disaster/war movies, playing with the idea of gaze in the same way the game plays with the idea of complicity and obedience to perception.

I thought the whole thing with the Apple of Idunn was that it created illusions/delusions in people and allowed possessors of it to present themselves as messianic figures and miracle workers. Did they add direct mind control to it's repertoire of powers after the second game or something?
@FoldingIdeas7 жыл бұрын
The Apple can... do stuff. It's really weird 'cus, you're right, it's presented largely as some Ring of Sauron sort of "project your will" kind of thing, but Abstergo treats it like it's got mind control powers, and when you actually get your hands on it you just use it to vaporize a bunch of dudes.
@doyleharken34777 жыл бұрын
The main writers left after the second game and the overall myth arc derailed as a result. Whatever the original plans for the pieces of Eden, they degenerated into "they can do whatever the current story necessitates" objects of techno-magic.
@Cajaquarius7 жыл бұрын
Doyle Harken : Ah, that would explain it. New writers. I prefer the old apple as it was more subtle in the way it works, if a little blasphemous in presentation.
@Levyathyn7 жыл бұрын
I believe it was a device originally used to harness and manifest will. It was designed to either intake willpower from an individual or project it over possibly a small group--based on the wielder--and Abstergo, like the original designing race, had plans to use it to affect the entire world. I think, as others have said, part of the problem is the general denigration of writing integrity for the game series and the lack of care and execution on that front from Ubisoft. But, I believe the Apple's power is open to interpretation, as it is simply said to change minds or even reality based on how strong the mind of the user is and what they want to do with it.
