I feel like in a lot of games where you can be in relationships with NPCs and end one they’ll just automatically accept it (even if they’re not happy about it) because you’re the Player and only the Player gets agency. ​@@SlyWhitefoxxo I'm a goodie two shoes druid who keeps saying and doing nice things that he hates but now at the beginning of Act 3 he's getting fond of me despite himself. (translation: slightly warmer than neutral atm and a lot fewer Astarion Disapproves messages) The key is to absolutely respect when he is asked to do something and says "NO" with screaming neon lights, all the body language, no more flirty tone, etc. It's so obvious. The game WILL let you force him to do things for your own benefit, and that is where he will actually start to hate you. If you don't do all the evil things that earn his approval, you can't romance him, but even if you're the most lawful good person he'll be your friend...so long as you don't violate his actual boundaries. So keep being nice to everyone and don't let anyone, including yourself, take advantage of him, and he'll happily follow you to the hells and back.

@@judetwee he is pretty easy to romance even when playing nice and helpful character, he only gives like "-1" for being a goody two-shoes, and he easily has 20-30 points jumps in approval in the pivotal dialogues with him. So yeah, keep being nice to him, don't let the game mechanics lure you into violating his boundaries, and you can easily get to "high" approval even without the romance dialogues, and to "exceptional" with them, even when playing super nice character.

@@REC-L just finished my playthrough around 6 minutes ago. Binged played through and cut my run time in half cuz I didn't do unnecessary side quests that didn't involve our boi. So I only missed out on loot really. But! Gotta say. Anyone that's reading this. He is the best romance hands down. Everyone is on that Karlach grind... But I'd give Astarion the S tier. Edit: Oh! And my thoughts? Astarion is way WAY deeper then he seems and is honestly just a cuddly loser with a broken heart/spirit. But I made sure to keep him happy the whole playthrough and never hurt him. Also I made him reject his masters power, mostly cuz I feel him getting his redemption would be better for him in the long run? Might not actually be better tho. Let me know!

Started the game hating Astarion and being annoyed with him but he really grew on me and is the best romance option in like any game I have ever played. I'm not gonna lie, one of the things I most love about Astarion is his complexity. They took your standard evil vampire rogue and gave him, honestly, good reason to be a jaded asshat. I WOULD BE TOO. Think about it: for 200 years he suffered torment and torture the likes of which most people could never imagine. I am certain he prayed to every God in existence. And at some point, I'm sure he even prayed for an end just to make it all stop. Yet nobody, no God, nor mortal, took pity on Astarion. And thus, he was forced to endure. As a person with childhood trauma, I really feel like both Larian (for their writing) and the voice actor's performance knocked it out of the fucking ballpark with truly representing the fucked up kind of person such an experience leaves you. And that may be a big part of the reason that Astarion calls so much, to so many. Because he is a character that we relate with. The more you interact with him, the more you realize that Astarion is a person who is honestly hurting and frightened. There's real trauma to his story, which lends his character so much more weight.

As for gods, yes, he literally says in the game that he prayed to the gods and none answered, that's why he disapproves every time you are nice to "nice" clerics like Ilmather (who was supposed to be a god of tormentedn and save those in pain, so yeah, Astarion being salty with that particular god is understandable), and he directly says that he hoped to die when he was in Cazador's service.

I thought it was a bit poetic in my case tho as I went HEAVY Durge in the early to mid game, but kept doing all my companions quest... the right way (of course as "right" as you can without Gale, Wyll, Karlach, Jeheira, and Halsin being alive/ in the story) like I got Laezel to come to terms with what Vlaakith had been doing, got Shadowheart to not kill Nightsong, (later) got Astarion to not ascend, got Minthara... to not genocide EVERYONE we met, and my I basically rp'd it as my character slowly questioning why he was acting this way after killing Isobel. The feeling started after killing Alfira, he figured he'd kill more, but Isobel was a breaking point. The more he helped his allies, the more he questioned if he truly wanted to serve his father, and after Astarion's quest, he fought Orin and rejected Bhaal. Sorry for the exposition, but when he chose to be the sacrifice that became a mindflayer and Astarion friend-zoned him I was like... yeah, yeah my character probably deserves that... worse even, but they DID decide their destiny ultimately.

So this... Uh... This happened to me in a roundabout way in real life. I wanted to leave my current partner of 11 yrs way back in the beginning because of how I look/chronic illness making my life HARD. I am overweight. I have autoimmune diseases that have thinned out what was once beautiful, dark curly hair. It was a low point in my life, and I couldn't possibly conceive of a man loving my broken self. It is even more fitting in that he has the same sort of body build as in this character design. So anyway, when I told him I felt he deserved better... Someone more beautiful and not so full of turmoil and illness, the absolute PAIN that came out of his mouth when he said, "You will absolutely not speak of yourself this way. I love YOU... Ok this is a perfect conversation for my Blood Hunter to have with him, he’ll accept more power if it gets him closer to his goals, but he’s become more attached to the Spawn than he ever wanted to, pitying him instead of slaying him whenever he first got the chance to spring his trap on Astarion, luring him in, not telling him he already knew what he was. I’ve never played a game where the companions couldn’t be swayed fairly easily by the main character persuading them to do something. When I was trying to set Nightsong free, I tried persuading Shadowheart not to do it. That only made her more adamant. What finally worked was letting her MAKE HER OWN CHOICE. Everything we had been through shaped her decision, but she had the very human reaction of getting defensive and doubling down unless you stood back and let her make the choice. That was amazing writing.
