The next time remove the nuts on the ball joints completely while the the shaft is in the taper then put them back on a couple of threads so no need to use allen wrench. Clean the holes in the control arms of rust make new ones go in easier. I understood the markings on the ball joints face inward so when you put grease in ball joints it doesnt squeeze out on the brake pads.

If just doing LBJ's on these trucks has anyone found it necessary to do an alignment? I could see it if you changed out the UCA with new bushings etc...but just the LBJ I would think not. My drivers boot is gone so it won't hold grease anymore. Figured I do just both LBJ's, truck is an 07 2wd and has 90k on it, all highway, stock rims and 265 tires. Truck has never had an alignment but holds th road perfectly and no abnormal tire wear.

It goes on the upper ball joint underneath the upper control arm. It's just for extra protection to make sure the ball joint doesn't vibrate or pop out. The factory ball joints did not come with a snap ring.

Great informative video. I am in the process of putting a new CV axle on a 2000 surburban 1500 for my college going son and while I had everything off and truck jacked up. I cleaned the grease zerks for the outer tie rod , upper and lower ball joints and then greased and found all three rubber boots have tears and grease coming out. They were really dirty with grease everywhere so I suspected they might be torn and they are. I think it might be easier to do this with my CV axle off. Doesn't seem to have all the play that your joints have, but I guess that will happen next unless I replace them. I have no ball joint tools like you do, so I might turn this over to a mechanic. Is there a way to just replace the boots and then grease thru the zerks with new boots or is it best to just replace the whole thing with moog parts? Thanks for any info you can provide.
@BLUECOLLARGARAGE
@BLUECOLLARGARAGE 6 жыл бұрын
johntube2525 honestly I would just replace the ball joints since your already going to be in there plus with those boots having holes in them it's likely moisture and dirt are already in there. If you follow my video it's not really that hard. As for the tools you can go to any of the local parts store and rent the u-joint press and the CV axle nut set for free and the rest are pretty much just basic hand tools. As far as the ball joints there are other brands besides Moog that are decent. If you decide to purchase some check out www.rockauto.com huge selection and they are almost 50% cheaper than your local parts store.
@johntube2525

Thanks for answering right away. I have an old friend that is a retired mechanic and he said, if the grease is just oozing out of a small tear, you can go a long ways on those joints, if you make sure to grease every oil change. Or if you want to buy even more time grease every 1500 miles. He said if the boot is completely torn all the way around then better replace the joints. Since mine or my sons is oozing thru small tears, I finished the CV axles and I am going to tell my son to come to my house every 1500 miles or every oil change and jack up with my floor jack and use my jack stands and change the oil and grease and keep your fingers crossed. Great video and I may be looking for it again someday. Thanks for the tip on renting tools. He also said the lower ball joint is not a job for amateurs, since I have torsion bars. They need to be released and then put the tension back on once the new joint has been put on. I haven't seen that on any video so far? Thanks for your help.

okay, so before you haul off and go to the local parts store and decide you want to do this.There's a ton of stuff left off here but the most important from my experience and I just did this yesterday, is the amount of force you are going to have to exert to get that ball joint off and on with that press. I"m a big guy and even having a great breaker bar and footing it was like I was going to shut a roid just trying to get this thing on, it is a PITA. Now when you are pressing it in the press is going to lean and make it much harder to go in fact like this video shows, the press is going to lean to the side just a tad, enough to make it dam near impossible. The other thing and none of these videos show it, is taking off the boot then making sure you put the boot metal ring back on while not cutting the snot out of it. Once you start trying to do this, if your's is pre-loaded your going to be almost SOL because that grease is going to rubberized the boot end making it to loose to really roll around the wring grove. Now if you you're lucky the metal wring is not distorted from removing the boot and you can get it to work. If you don't put on that metal retainer, when you go to load your joint with grease it's going to either shot out the top and or shoot down the boot. But FME, this was the whole part of the exercise and a real PITA. People really need to know this before they attempt it.

Grim Kreepa mine was a 4x4, just popped everything ball joints first then tie rod, pulled axel nut and just set the knuckle out of the way. Also helps put antiseeze on the spline, will make it easier to replace next time!

@@morepowerelectric2081 I just did mine yesterday, 2005 GMC Sierra Denali, the front CV Axle did not allow me to take the lower ball joint at all. If I didn't remove the wheel bearing/ knuckle I cant remove the CV axle, I had to, for me there was no way could have taken out the lower ball joint off without removing the CV axle.

Grim Kreepa understand, but I separated upper first and then popped lower off, then removed knuckle, but I had to loosen the cv shaft to give me more wiggle room, when I do the other side I’ll do a video, but mine is 2500hd 2005.

Good video but doesn’t really encapsulate the amount of work especially for midwestern vehicles, wait until your rotor takes 2 hours to get off because of salt/ corrosion. Or you end up destroying it in the process and have to replace that

U should of changed the upper control arm with the ball joint. Its typical to be bad. So do it at one time. Also take your wedding ring off while working on car.

You can loosen castle nuts on damaged ball joints a turn or 2 (put cotter pin back) then drive around the block, and they'll hammer themselves loose. Turning the steering with the steering wheel to one side or the other helps you gain access, makes the job easier. That, and a wire brush & some PB Blaster. Also, 35mm = 1 3/8". A 3/4" will do for 21mm. No need to buy tools if you already have them. If you don't have standard wrenches & sockets, your dad or grandad likely has. Or that old coot neighbor. Not that he'll loan them to you. And with chassis work, always grab a bigger hammer than you think you'll need. And, this is important: Get a tetanus booster the same say you decide to do this yourself. Sepsis is no joke.
