Thank you for this! This helps so much as my optimism never actually explained what it was to me. I was wondering if you have any advice for contact lenses? I actually had a contact test and they said I was allowed them . They put them in my eyes for me but made me take them out myself. I have one eye with an astigmatism so the contact was thicker so it was easy to take out but the other eyes contact was much thinner and a different shape so I found it super hard to get out. Due to this I actually experienced my first ever panic attack, I haven’t had one since. I’m sure it’s just me but I’d love to try contacts because my glasses irritate me because they always get so dirty and they start turning wonky? Like if you put them down they’ll wobble because the arms aren’t at the same angle but this has happened every time I’ve had new glasses so I think I just have an uneven head or ears. The arms also tend to losen quite a lot. But I’d love to get contacts so any advice on either my glasses or contacts would be great 😁 Edit: another thing is when reading with my eye with an astigmatism, with my good eye closed, everything starts to blacken? I am short sighted in this eye which may be why but I can’t read in this eye from any distance unless the writing is big. Is this darkening something to be concerned about?

I went to the eye doctor a while back to try contacts for the first time as my vision has gotten slightly worse as I've gotten older and so I have a number of questions that may be good topics for you. 1: Why does our vision degrade over time and what may contribute to that? For me specifically I've noticed that I have become more near sighted with it becoming harder to read signs at a distance or distinguish people's faces. 2: My doctor told me that I have pigment dispersion syndrome (I think that's what it's called) which involves the pigment of my eye falling loose and risks the ducts in my eyes being plugged up. Least that's my understanding. Could you better explain this, what to look out for, and best advice to avoid making it worse? 3: I often sneeze a lot when the sun is in my eyes. My mom has always had the same problem, but most people I ask say they've never had this experience. From my understanding it's rare but perfectly normal. Do you have any insight on this? 4: I tried contacts, but the first pair felt too thick and we're really uncomfortable on my eyes. The second pair made it feel like tears we're welling up all the time with a sort of weight to the underside of my eye. I gave up before trying a third pair. Is it common to have complications with contacts? Do they just not work for some people? Or is it just a matter of adjusting to the discomfort? Hopefully this gives you some good ideas for future videos. I'd love to see what you have to say on these topics! Thank you!

Hope you're still following this one, here's a pickle: I had lazik on both eyes 10+ yrs ago. The doctor set me up with one eye (R) set to focus at distance because I ride a motorcycle, the other eye for close up work like a computer screen. It sounded fishy but it seemed to work as he said. It worked great for years but now I'm noticing a slight bit of double vision whether I'm at my desk or driving. Night driving is the worst, I have to close my left eye to focus on the road. What gives with this? I should probably mention I'm 70 and a lot more active than my peers. Is this age related or did I break something that can't be fixed?

Hi Doc, great channel and great info!! If you have surgery to correct astigmatism, is that a permanent fix or does it eventually return & worsen over time?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave, Most people will experience stability for a long time, however it depends on many factors (eye health, corneal thickness, etc.) Oftentimes, people may experience some change in vision due to aging changes within the eye (cataracts) or eyelid tension (relaxing eyelids). SO in short, it may not be 100% permanent. However, it still may be an excellent choice for you and is something I would encourage you to discuss with your surgeon.

Hi Doc, love your videos! I have a bad kind of astigmatism. Its now around -6.25 in both eyes. After wearing prescription glasses for almost my whole my life, i now wear contacts for a week. However my whole vision seems very distorted. Circles look oval instead of round. Is this normal? And will this go away after some time?
@DoctorEyeHealth

Hmm that is super interesting. In fact, i think your probably super perceptive! If the astigmatism correction at that high amount isnt corrected perfectly by the contacts, then objects can look distorted. Are you wearing soft or hard contacts?

Hello, Dr. Allen. I was diagnosed with astigmatism in one eye, don't now remember which, so they set my glasses to compensate. Next time I went a year or so later I was told it was gone but had some in the other eye. The last few years I have gone I was told I did not have it at all. I go to the VA and there optometrists are all recent grads so don't know how competent they are. Also they seem to not be able to get me good distance correction on my glasses. I am considering going to contacts for distance but did not have good luck with that in the past. I will have to pay out of pocket for that since the VA does not cover contact lenses. Is astigmatism something that can actually change?

Hi doc I'm a bit confused. Recently I went to a new optician and I was told that I had astigmatism. I didn't quite understand because I thought that meant you see blurry at all distances, but I see wonderfully at all distances. I can see up close clearly, and a pretty decent distance away according to the test so I don't get it. Was it a misdiagnosis?

If the astigmatism is small than you may not notice, in addition if you squint you can help relieve some astigmatism blur. Sometime the astigmatism can be negated by farsightedness too. Tough to say.

@@DoctorEyeHealth Sorry to hijack this year old comment, but I do worry I have diabetes, and have weird static patterns in the left-most side of my vision, often when going from one room to another. When I'm stationary, it's an occasional flash akin to a copier light going up or down the left-most side of my vision, whichever it decides to be in that moment. I had a dilated eye exam last week, and she said she didn't see anything abnormal, and that it was due to some normal rearrangement of the jelly inside the eye. Should I get a second opinion?

I went to the Dr. last month and received "progressive" eyewear, which means I have the bottom part for reading close up and the upper part as a regular lense since I can see distance and not close up very well. I am 55 years old and have seen my vision decrease some. I am on the computer alot so that strains my eyes. I am not so comfortable with my new eyeglasses and actually prefer to use the cheap reading glasses. lol..

Is it true that weakened muscles in the eye can cause astigmatism? Such as chronic use of close eye use on computers, indoors most of them time, ect. That these weakened muscles cause pulling on one or more sides of the eye and mishape the cornea? If so, would strengthening these eye muscles using eye exercises alleviate the astigmatism and maybe help reshape the cornea a bit? Or is this simply (aside from hereditary and trauma like reasons) a by chance situation that could occur to anyone? My other question would be if it’s mild, like in my case a -0.5 CYL with Axis 005 to right eye and SPH -025 to left eye , is it worth wearing glasses or to learn to adapt and ignore it? Or maybe situational such as night time (low light) activities?

Is it recommended for someone with good vision to still see a doctor or should you go only if you have vision problems?

Hey Kaylyn, Thanks for watching. There are many benefits to having a comprehensive eye exam beyond just glasses. It is NEVER a waste of my time examine anyone's eyes. I personally recommend yearly exams, however I know when I was a resident at the VA we often saw people every 2 years. It is a good idea to have an eye exam to of course detect early eye disease, but also during an exam we can detect things like high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, vitamin deficiencies, and even some types of cancer. Otherwise I am happy that your doing well. Happy 2019 -Joe

I downloaded a anti blue light it kinda helped..I play all day..yes literally so I think if you could reccomend some apps for reduced blue light and rad,also if you know some eye exercises and some things to do to improve my eye vision..my current anti blue light kinda helps my eye not to like hurt or strain..even though a 8hours nonstop play..hehehe..😅😭 *EDIT* - I forgot to tell that right part of my glasses for my right eye does not fit anymore..its still blurry as hell,but Im scared that my mom will be angry because I have a much worse vision rather than improving it,so do you have any suggestion how to improve it without changing glasses,theyre also exp and im scared😭😭😭😭😭😭😭pls help me doc

That depends on several factors...such as how severely nearsighted you are and if both eyes are equally nearsighted or if they are significantly different between right and left eye. This question is best answered by the doctor who wrote you glasses prescription. In general, if you see better with the glasses on...I think most situations you would want to see the best you can? I know the only time I don't wear glasses or contacts is when I am walking from my bedroom to the bathroom in the early morning.

So in the morning I see fine but when the night hits all the lights seems glaring and it’s really hard for me to see. If my optician recommended me to get glasses do I have to wear it in the morning as well?

What about what can cause eye pain in only one eye. The kind where it takes away your ability to think, follow thoughts and talk. It gets hard to blink because the eyelids can no longer connect. And the pain spreads along the face on that side.

That sounds pretty tough to answer in one minute. It also sounds pretty awful..you should seek medical help if you haven't already. Have you spoken to your doctor about it yet?

Why don’t they make astigmatism contact lenses for CYL -1.00? It starts with -0.75 and increase with 0.5, e.g -0.75, -1.25, -1.75 and so on.

I have had this for years. Without my glasses, EVERYTHING is blurry and I mean EVERYTHING. My eye doc referred me to see if I was a candidate for LASIK; unfortunately, I am not but I was recommended refractive lens exchange (which I'm not going to do).

I see starbursts around lights but my vision is very clear. Is it astigmatism? My eyes gets itchy too. Hope you’ll reply on my comment. I’ve never visited an optometrist .
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking. Astigmatism often causes more blurred vision that starbursts. Starburst can be caused by dry eyes and ocular surface disease including anything inside the eye causing glare. Such as cataracts for example.

Well you can correct it pretty easily with glasses and contacts. LASIK works well up to about 5 to 6 diopters. That fixes it almost instantly.

Please do eye trauma info! What should we have in our first aid kits for eyes? Is it true that some types of eye rinses are better than others? I once saw a product - a water bottle for first aid eye rinsing - claiming that it was superior because it was more than just saltwater. How and why? And the age old question: How to handle kids and sand in their eyes from the sand box (cat&worms!) or the beach (?). There is NO way my kid would ever agree to eye rinsing under a fosset - and anyways, some places (vacation!) have undrinkable water in fossets. What about using a water bottle that has been with us for half a day in the sun, sipping from it all along - still ok to rinse eyes with? And what about the low quality of childrens' sunglasses - are they better than nothing for the beach (do they even have UV light protection?)

I have been told by an eye doctor that astigmatism cannot be corrected by any eye surgery, especially not by lasic. He said lasic could even make it worse. It was about 20 years ago, though. Was he right? Was the technology back then really so bad and underdeveloped for treating patients with astigmatism? I am still baffled by this, since later I have heard it can be corrected by eye surgery, but I was reluctant to believe it on account of what I had heard from the first doctor! I am confused to this day, I guess! Some doctors can be real assholes. No offence. :)
