Long comment alert! Uncle Justin is spot on again. Sport is dynamic, organic and artistic, its not a precise science. There has always been an element of subjective interpretation in referees decisions. It needs to be accepted. If it wasn't the case we wouldn't enjoy it and we'd have less to talk about. VAR was initially introduced to correct obviously wrong decisions but instead it is being applied in an overly forensic way without acknowledging the contingent and subjective nature of the game and instead they are trying to find the perfect decision in everything. Players dont help by trying to con the ref all the time; dropping at the slightest touch and acting like they've been pole axed when nothing has really happened. Its a contact sport! Man up! Super Jack is the master at getting free kicks but he doesn't act up like a fool. He just draws contact. If simulation was actually penalised more often it would help the refs a lot. WE all know that players also "leave something" on each other in tackles so as a ref, knowing that, how do you decide where the lines between fair and foul are in a few seconds?! DRS in cricket has allowed for the subjectivity of the umpire very well but no one is trying to con the umpire! VAR have moved correctly, in that direction this season by giving more credence to the referees on field decision and, I think that they need to go further. In rugby the decision for review is in the referees hands 90% of the time and that needs to be introduced into football unless he has obviously missed something and made big mistake because he hasn't seen something. They need to go back to basics and be consistent in how they apply the whole process accepting that there is room for interpretation because football is dynamic and also, because there is an acceptable element of physical aggression involved. Subjective interpretation is needed. Its a a vital aspect of the game. Be consistent and stop refereeing every detail from outside by looking for anything that could be wrong as if these factors don't exist. Its hard to understand how they have got it so wrong!

A bit late with this but huge congrats on the big news the other day mate. Happy for you :) on the Villa the frustration with PGMOL has been a lot recently, I tried to ignore the boxing day controversy as I was with Family and didn't want that souring the mood. On a positive note we tend to have a good record against Brighton and ollie has had a good record in recent times against Brighton, so im hopeful we can bounce back, but we need to find some consistency away from home sooner rather than later. Schar put his feet up into Duran and Duran saw the red mist. Most of the time you're going to get sent off when you leave your studs on a player. Thing is every defender will try to wind him up now, they know his weakness. Its not a new thing in the game. Remember Rooney v Portugal, Ronaldo's cheeky wink. Remember Beckham v Argentina when Simeone clattered him and Beckham kicked out. If I could turn back time. If I could find a way...Its a tough lesson and hopefully one he learns from.

The only point in VAR it seems is to check if a goal is offside, everything else they just agree with the ref. And checking every goal for offside has stolen the joy out of celebrating a goal if it’s at all close.

Luke, we have serious issues coping with fit, pacy, rapid passing teams that offer us little time or space on the ball. If these teams also have clinical finishing (like Newcastle or Nottingham) we are well and truly cooked....we can't handle hard pressing opponents who finish their chances. Our opponents are aware that Martinez is weaker on his left side and that the diagonal shot from his right side arcing into his top left hand goal corner is his achilles heel. Because he lacks the confidence to defend the goal on his left side Martinez seems to shadow his left in the goal area excessively. Opponents sense this and square pass the ball from Villa's left flank for the easy tap in to his extreme right. ( These 2 tactics: the arcing diagonal shot across Martinez into his left top bin and the quick square pass from the attackers right wing for the tap in to Martinez extreme right, having pulled him out to his left, is how we got dismantled by Newcastle). Our weaknesses have been found out by the opposition and if Emery cannot devise a method to disrupt skillful hard pressing teams we'll end this season in mid table.

On the red card chaos, how the appeals procedure has upheld the 3 match ban for Duran and nobody has said anything about the João Pedro intentionally throwing an elbow, which if landed was definitely aimed at the head, would have knocked the lad out, and is illegal in most combat sports nevermind football, If a boxer throws that elbow, he's being marched around the ring having points deducted for the round, VAR should be telling the ref "Red for Pedro who has swung an elbow aiming for the face!" if he'd done that in the streets, it deffo looks like fighting talk more than a good will gesture. I didn't hear anyone mentioning how Schars foot connects with Duran first as he's tumbled before Jhon goes over with him and catches him with his boot, it's not the ground breaking stamp the pundits would have you believing it was, the size and strength of Duran, if he meant to stomp on Schar, I doubt he'd be walking away from it, it ruined the game as a spectacle and left us backs against the wall... But it's our annual boxing day defeat and St James's Park whopping out the way in one sitting, 3 home games across 2 competitions to look forward to, to get back to winning ways and points on the board, progress in the cup, and rebuild the optomism around Villa Park and celebrate the new year.. Im a Newcastle fan. My initial reaction was it’s never a red. Upon watching it back loads I’m still unsure. I don’t know how anyone can be 100% sure either way. Therefore surely benefit of the doubt has to go with the offending player and therefore no red / no ban.

I see it Duran wanted to get both feet on Schar and would’ve done a better job of it only if he weren’t falling. Durans feet definitely could’ve gone left of Schar if Duran wanted them to. Its what I would have done as an honest person! Folks that think Duran’s feet couldn’t avoid Schar’s backside were either shitpoor athletes or are shameless fans which is understandable Duran could have missed Schar to the left if he only wanted to.

Justin is 10,000% correct - that refereeing is completely subjective and clearly that call on Duran was. Frustrating but Taylor was the one with the whistle. It's in the past now Villa need to move on and I hope the refereeing is subjective towards The Villa tomorrow (one can only hope, anyway).

Despite the poor refereeing decisions going against us, we are poor defensively and are conceding too many goals compared to the teams around us. Look at our current GD. I would revert to Mings & Konsa as our CBs and buy a new RB in January. Perhaps consider using Pau more as a midfielder at times or a LB/CB. If we can get Leon Bailey assisting and scoring again then we’ll be very competitive near the top of the PL table. UTV.

Duran doesn’t catch him just once the first time he catches him with his left foot,the 2nd time his right leg is a good few inches outside of Schar,s body then changes direction and eventually his studs land on him and the studs go up his back then his heel comes towards his head and I’ve watched this 20+ times. As for Rodger’s these are the things that need changing because he is holding his face and trying to get a fellow pro sent off when there is no contact with his face at all, Netto from Chelsea does the same thing against Fulham and we’ve had players doing it as well and it really boils me regardless of who it is and that’s where Var should tell the ref he’s trying to con you and that player should get a yellow card and this trying to con refs will stop rather quickly. I’m writing this hopefully you’ll see I’m trying to have a sensible conversation this is not against Villa, Schar got sent off the first game of the season against Southampton for an alleged head butt with Diaz completely acting and Newcastle appealed the decision and that didn’t get overturned and all that is doing is allowing players to cheat which I find disgusting. I hope villa go on and disrupt the Red cartel and qualify for Europe once again. Refereeing needs a fundamental overhaul in the Prem and Europe. Coaches should be able to challenge decisions on the field. We need a TMO type system, we need refs to take their time, be thorough, watch slow mo. The arrogance of football authorities introduction this system and not following such a successful model in Rugby shows real hubris.

THANK GOD ITS THE FINAL GAME OF 2024! We've been nothing but crap this year. Saw something earlier that said we've only won 3 more games then we've lost in the premier league this entire year and we have a minus goal difference 💀 The club is in abit of a mess but we just don't see it because we've got champions league football. Look at the bigger picture of 2024, the team can't pull a run of wins together and off the field it's a mess and I'm absolutely sick to death of repeating myself about it. We were lucky to get champions league football to say the least, yes we're doing decent in it but it proves to me one thing that these players aren't interested in playing unless it's against a big team and for that matter when there being applaud by 40,000 people for passing backwards. No one has been good enough this season on a consistent basis and I could name at least 7 who need to leave in January but won't because we're so shit and clingy to players. I'm not watching the Brighton game if I can help it. Watching Watkins is like watching a pig run in water. He's done and he's not a striker and i can clearly see he's mentality ain't in the right place either so I'm not gonna back him. Just a video suggestion for you Luke idk if your doing one but like ranking the players as a whole in 2024 on how good or bad they've been and access the teams as a whole. The refs are not 100% - at the speed of the PL the VAR is there to assist … USE IT. Anthony Taylor is NOT the best and he’s had a few bad decisions against Villa including a terrible Wembley game. It was a red card. Yes, his foot was coming down that direction, but he clearly decides in his head to stamp. He has these aggressive moments, not so much this year, but he has them I personally find the Rogers one more of an embarrassment on his part. Barely was touched and went down like he was shot, no different to Kyle Walker. I hate when other team players do it and I'll call it when our players do it. He tried to cheat the referee to get a player sent off. It's as simple as that
