Forgot to mention. When I say the Gen 4 "adds" Dolby Atmos and that it only works on either PC or Xbox One that is because they have the software for it. But it does not work on PS4 as they do not have the software. This is super misleading as Dolby Atmos is software based not hardware based. Which means it will work on either version (PS4/Xbox One) for both the Gen 3 or the Gen 4 on Xbox or PC only as long as the Dolby is turned off and you have selected that in the settings. Sorry for the mix up.

Nice video, I subscribed. I do have a question though. The noticeable audio improvement that you speak of, is this solely because of the Dolby Atmos? Did you only test this on PC? Would the audio improvement be as noticeable on a ps4 pro if I upgraded my Gen3 ps4 addition to a Gen4 ps4 addition?
@ThomasMuehler5 жыл бұрын
@@davidmoro5101 I appreciate you joining the Knights of the Round Table. I hope you enjoy your time here. 1. No, the audio improvement IS NOT from the Dolby Atmos. As that is available from both generations via software on Xbox/PC only. Unless PS4 has added that. 1a. The audio improvement is from the way the drivers sit and push sound into the ear, and other hardware/software changes they did behind the scenes. As I think Logitech ended up taking over Astro and did the full tuning this time round. 2. My main platform of gaming is my PC. I only tested it on there. I probably should have also tested it on my PS4. But I don't think it would make a difference. But I could be proved wrong about this. 3. I found the audio improvement to be quite different. But in order to test that I had to make sure that A. the dB was the same (as even 1 dB difference can make something sound better) and B. that I had the same exact EQ settings on both devices (Done via Astro Command Center). Others may not be able to notice the difference unless testing side to side. Others also might not think that the improvement in sound is worth the money of upgrading. So that is something only you can decide. It was for me. But I do think that it would be just as noticeable on the PS4 Pro. especially with tweaking in Astro Command Center. But that is such a hard question to answer. As everyone's hearing is different. As are their expectations. We also get used to how a certain thing sounds and think that sounds best so when it is different from that sound we may think it sounds worse when it actually sounds better. The main thing that I noticed. That hopefully I said in the video. Was that the Gen 3 was a lot more bass heavy and muddy which made highs harder to hear. The Gen 4 had more accurate sound (by a small amount) but was a lot less bass heavy, muddy, and a lot more clear. But still had just as good of bass. It's hard to explain. Perhaps this will help explain it. Hopefully you have tried active noise cancelling headphones. Picture you are in a store. A lot of people are talking. You are trying to have a conversation with the person in front of you. You can still hear everything they are saying and the nuances of their voice. The background noise is there but not super distracting. Then you put on the noise cancelling headphones. It essentially mutes the conversations going on around you (you can hear them if you really focus) but lets you fully focus on the conversation you are having with the person in front of you easier and allows you to hear the nuances of their voice easier. That's kind of what it is like. It's not a huge difference if you aren't trying it side to side. But once you do you can tell. Is it needed? No. Would I upgrade strictly based on sound quality no. I upgraded mine for all the reasons why I mentioned in the video. But I wouldn't upgrade based on a single thing. It was an expensive upgrade that I was willing to pay for. But a lot of other people won't and shouldn't because they will be perfectly happy with the Gen 3.

Hello sir, you haven't described the wireless range difference between gen 3 and gen 4. Does the different wireless band improve the range while moving around the house? Thanks
@ThomasMuehler4 жыл бұрын
@@sbeer Hmm, I thought I covered that in the review. The Gen 3 has the 5 GHz range (30 feet) and the Gen 4 has the 2.4 GHz range (50 feet). This allows the range to be much improved. Previously with the Gen 3 I was barely able to walk out of my room before it started to drop or get interference. The Gen 4 I can walk around my entire house with out issues. So from my experience and in my setting it was dramatically improved. However since more electronics use that 2.4 GHz band it increases the likelihood of interference which I haven't noticed at all. This will vary depending on personal setups by a bit.

@@ThomasMuehler all I needed to know was the experience of walking around the house. Thank you!! By the way, you compared and scored the audio by using the Astro preset (I think). From what I hear, the Studio preset is the most balanced and I believe at least the "music test" could have seen better results by using it. Just a little nit pick, it should still be one of the best headset in terms of audio quality, maybe on par with the Arctis Pro Wireless from Steelseries? To my likings probably even better since I tend to avoid closed off headsets and the Steelseries seems the more isolating one.

But when I got their, I showed one of the employees the Gen 3 A50 on Amazon and it was for 220, so the employee at Best Buy didn’t know the difference and really thought that the 300 dollar gen 4 A50s were 220, not knowing that those were the gen 3 LMAOOOO. I would just like to know if these can be set to 7.1 channel mode in Windows Sound Control Panel, versus 2 channel mode (combined with Atmos)? Yes, I've tried using Dolby Atmos with so-called "7.1 surround" headphones that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about Windows recognizing the device as having 7.1 channels. In the past, this was the only way I could get my EPOS GSP 670 surround headphones to actually sound directional. My old Turtle Beach x41's also supported 7.1 channels in Windows, and the directionality on those was great even 10+ years ago.
@ThomasMuehler5 ай бұрын
So, you are asking what appears to be an easy question, but the answer is hard and complex. Simply put, yes these can be set to 7.1 mode in Windows Sound Control Panel. But I think you’ve got some misunderstandings of the technology. And that is further complicated by these particular headphones. As there is a big difference due to the sound card inside the base station between USB and optical. Making it so Optical will give you a lot better quality. Additionally, just for clarity sake I use both terms ‘headphones’ and ‘headsets’. But they mean the same thing. The only real difference is headsets have a microphone and, in this sense, tend to be more tuned for gaming. All formats of virtual surround sound (Windows Sonic, Dolby 5.1, Dolby 7.1, Dolby Atmos, DTS 5.1, DTS 7.1, etc.) are all different versions of HRTF technology. Which essentially takes two speakers (as most headphones only have two speakers) and turns them into more digital speakers with the goal of giving better directional audio and immersion. Depending on your hearing, ear canals, head shape, headphones, headphone tuning, headphone speaker quality, etc. will depend how well or not well that technology works for you. As some headphones have a better tuning to have better or worse directional sound (imaging) and soundstage (how wide or narrow the sound is) among other things. Which is what you’re experiencing with the EPOS GSP 670 and Turtle Beach X41 is different tunings of imaging and sound stage making better or worse directional quality. ALL headphones that are connected to your Windows Machine (assuming your soundcard/motherboard) supports a virtual surround format (or you’ve bought one in the case of Dolby Atmos or DTS) will give you whatever version of virtual surround sound you select (5.1, 7.1, Atmos, etc.). As this is done virtually making it so the physical device doesn’t matter. But the quality of that physical device can make the directional quality better or worse. Last, most games these days have a built in HRTF into the game engine already. Making it so having your headset set to stereo is best. As it is made to automatically translate that once you boot it up. Especially, for modern games. So, you’ll have to check each game you play to see what it supports. As if you you’re your Windows set to 7.1 but the game only supports stereo then it can “break the chain” (described below) making you have inferior sound quality. Speaking of “chain”. I visualize a chain. Where you need to have your windows sound set to 7.1 surround, the game needs to SUPPORT 7.1 surround, the game needs to be SET to 7.1 surround, and if there is a button your headset for surround sound it needs to be pressed so it can process it correct. Otherwise, it won’t work as there will be a “break in the chain”. But most headsets no longer have a function where you need to press a button. But the Astro A50 gen 3 and 4 do. The new Astro A50x does not. As in modern times we have moved away from physically setting this as it is usually done in the game engine. Last, there are very few headsets that actually have 5 or 7 speakers. But those never worked super well so were discontinued.
@Quinston825 ай бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I'm aware of the difference between channel based surround and object based surround (atmos) but for the moment it seems like atmos just sounds bad. So I'd like to stick to 7.1 in Windows because as long as I have virtualisation turned on in the headphone software, it provides good directionality. I play warzone mainly, and although it appears to have dropped support for 7.1, it actually does still support it and it sounds great on my gsp 670's. I'd like to stick with that technology until atmos matures a bit, even though the whole industry is already going that way, so I purchased some a50's and will try feeding it a dolby digital live signal from my sound card via optical. Hopefully with the on-ear surround virtualisation button enabled, the headset will convert that the same way my other pairs do, virtually obviously. But I'm just not sold on plain old stereo in game as I have tried and tested channel based input and it works amazingly well, with no loss of sound quality.
@ThomasMuehler5 ай бұрын
@@Quinston82 Yes, absolutely. You got to go with whatever sounds best to you and works best for you. I didn’t do a good job at making that apparent in my previous reply. As if it works, it works. If it doesn’t, I wanted to give you some more information that you could troubleshoot to get it to work. I don’t think there is a best HRTF technology. As I’ve tried them all and depending on the headset/headphone, game, movie, soundcard, etc. it all sounds different and varies in how good or bad of quality I get. Where I personally find Stereo to give me the most consistent results and has the least trade offs which is why I go with it. Which again, is just my preference and is not the “right answer” as the “right answer” is dependent on the individual. As I have not been as satisfied with you in my testing for channel-based input with no loss of sound quality (Most of the time. But in very specific scenarios absolutely does give way better quality and experience but the headache of making sure it worked was bad for me. As I felt I spent more time adjusting settings to try and get it to work than actually playing the game. And since I tend to play a ton of different games that worked against me as I constantly had to finagle. Hence me wanting stereo.). But again, that could be my ears are broken for that type of tech to work. Or the headsets I’m trying don’t support. Or I don’t have it setup correctly. Or the fact I play too many different games making it a constantly moving target. Whereas, if I just played 1 or 2 that worked would probably be better. One other thing to keep in mind with the A50’s Gen 3 and 4 is that they only support certain versions of Dolby. I think Dolby Logic IIx? Which I think includes Dolby Digital 5.1 and maybe 7.1? I’m not sure if it supports Dolby Digital Live. With my understanding of the A50’s I think if it DOES NOT support it you’d want the Dolby Button OFF as it would just pass through. Whereas, if it DOES support it then you want it on as it will go through that ‘chain’ correct. Whereas the new A50x does NOT support Dolby Digital but instead just Dolby Atmos FOR HEADPHONES (not normal Dolby Atmos). Which I think was stupid of them to not include the other Dolby variants. Which again, “breaks the chain” depending on the content you are consuming. So, one reason why Dolby Atmos may not sound good on the A50’s is the base station may or may not support that (I haven’t looked for a long time so going off memory so double check my statements if curious). Even though I think it comes with a Dolby Atmos code?
@Quinston825 ай бұрын
Well stereo does sound better, as turning on virtualisation adds a kind of reverb effect. I have to admit I haven't tried using just 2 channel stereo and letting the game add the HRFT, since some older games I play don't do that but do support 7.1 channel based surround (Project Cars 2 is a good example). I can see that leaving it on stereo would be far simpler and in fact sounds better, but I am a tinkerer! I don't mind playing around with different settings and I especially love tweaking the EQ to get the perfect sound for footsteps (in warzone), or just for audio fidelity. In another video of yours, I just heard you explain the on-ear surround button will need to be on to complete the chain of digital effects in 7.1 channel mode, and I assumed that to be the case. That's actually the reason I avoided the a50 x, it doesn't have one. Thanks for your help, I'm sure I'll enjoy my a50's when they arrive. p.s. I believe Dolby digital live is just dolby 5.1 with two extra channels virtualised (via optical), so it should be fine as long as they support dolby 5.1. This was the case with the turtle beach x41's.
@ThomasMuehler5 ай бұрын
@@Quinston82 Yeah, the reverb effect throws me off. But seems to be greatly diminished or gone when the “chain” is fully intact. And I like to tinker too. But recently, my schedule just doesn’t allow much time for that. So when I want to game I just want it simple. But once this chapter is done I’ll go back to tinkering again. As I find that to be the best way to learn! I am excited for you. If you happen to remember I would love to hear your thoughts/findings. As I genuinely am into that kind of stuff. Also, thanks for the clarification on the Dolby Digital Live. It’s been a minute since I looked at all the different surround technology.

By using stereo, would I be selling myself short, or is this the better choice for hearing footsteps and where they’re coming from. Thanks for any help 🤙🏼
@ThomasMuehler4 жыл бұрын
Good question. It's a super complicated question that to be honest I don't think I fully understand yet either. So, headsets use Simulated Surround Sound. Which means that that take a signal and then create 5 channels and 1 subwoofer (5.1) or 7 channels and 1 subwoofer (7.1) to create a wider sound stage and more accurate sound. Or at least that's the basic idea and the ideal case. Unfortunately, that usually doesn't translate well. In reality, often times surround sound actually gives you inferior sound because of a stupid amount of factors (which is the part I still don't fully understand). As in order to get good sounding surround you have to have everything in a chain setup correctly. So, for example and for simplicity sake. Game 1 supports Dolby Digital 7.1 surround sound. Game 2 supports DTS. Game 3 supports Stereo. We are using the Astro A50 on all three of these games. They only support Dolby signals. Which means that Game 2 and Game 3 won't sound good with surround sound because Game 2 uses a different algorithm (DTS) than Dolby and the A50's can't understand that language. For Game 3 the A50's would create 5.1 or 7.1 surround but since those channels don't actually exist you are going to get very poor directional sound and overall sound quality because it's making stuff up as it goes. Another way to think of it is that you have two speakers and you are imagining it has another 3 or 5 (5.1/7.1). However, Game 1 will sound great. Because it has specific channels for each channel and would give you a better experience over stereo. As long as you had A. Your computer/console set to 7.1, B. Your headset to 7.1, and C. your game set to 7.1. If any of those isn't set to 7.1 or setup incorrectly then you won't get good audio. Then there is the whole problem with optical only supporting 5.1 surround. But then we go into a whole other can of worms because that's true 5.1 not simulated and blah blah blah. So, in summary surround sound is moody. You have to check with every single piece of content you try to make sure it supports everything correctly or else you end up with inferior sound. Hence why I take the shortcut and just say to use stereo which works perfectly on everything without any setup and without any studying and checking things out. That's not to mention most games use HRTF which is the games version of surround sound which is supposed to be in stereo. But that's another can of worms. So, in teh end the mass majority of times you will have a better audio experience with stereo and won't be missing anything and it will give you a better experience because you are getting the full dynamic range and a whole bunch of other sound lingo without any processing. A lot of games these days also don't support surround or have that already built into the game which means you don't need it from an external source. So, to actually answer your question. No, you would not be selling yourself short by not using surround sound in the majority of cases. Your best bet is to look for an audiophile headphone that translates sounds super well. The A50's do a good job but I have found other headsets to do footsteps a bit better. You mostly want a headset that actually does the high end range better such as the Corsair Virtuoso which doesn't have the best overall sound quality. But ridiculous positional and footstep quality. Probably the best I've tried. I have a review on it. But that's the one I'd recommend for people who are super serious about competitive gaming. Where the A50's are more for the average gamer who wants good all around sound quality. Sorry for the book.

I've never heard anyone say 2.4Ghz has less interference over 5.8Ghz as that is completely backwards. 5.8Ghz is far superior in regards to interference and bandwidth, the 2.4Ghz range is INCREDIBLY congested. Only down side to 5.8Ghz is its a higher band and does not have the penetration that 2.4Ghz has. So its range is a lot lower and it does a piss job at penetrating through just drywall. 5.8Ghz is not as widely implemented enough with home routers which resulted in the Gen3's not working for a large range of their consumers. For the application of a PC headset or a console where you are sitting in the same room a 5.8Ghz transceiver would out perform a 2.4Ghz any day. I actually just bought the Gen3 headsets today ($216), should be on my door step when I get home. I have the A50 Gen1 which I only get about 3hrs of use out of lol I actually bought the SteelSeries Arctis 7 but after wearing them for 30 minutes they were KILLING my ears, so I returned them and order the A50 Gen3. I could not justify adding an additional $100 for the minor upgrades (minor to me at least) that the Gen4 provided.

What a great comment. I appreciate you taking the time to write this. I agree. I was surprised when I read that they switched from the 5.8 ghz to the 2.4. But I'm sure you got your money's worth out of them. I agree with the Steelseries Arctis. I have tried almost all of them and am always disappointed by them. Which is unfortunate as I hear great things about them. But not my cup of tea. I would be interested in what you think about the Gen 3's. Last, for some the upgrades are worth it. @@ThomasMuehler So first impressions... First off, I'm not a big "audio guy" so take what I say with that in mind lol I personally think the Steelseries sounded a lot better. The audio is almost the same as my Gen1 A50's which is a little depressing. I find the dock to be a little too big, and the headsets don't really fit secure in it (wife has cats). They fit just like my Gen1's so at least there is that. I really expected the audio to sound WORLDS different from the Gen1, like the Steeleries did. I'm not sure if they are really worth the $200 price tag (I bought a Gen3) If you are a major audio enthusiast, then it might be a different story. Had he Steelseries headset not caused pain with my ears I would keep it over the Astros hands down no questions asked. Headset has been charging for about 4hrs from 0% and its at 76%. So it seems to charge pretty quickly.

So, you'd pick the Steelseries over the A50's if they were more comfortable. Perhaps I need to try them again. I really appreciate you giving me a quick review of your thoughts.

I'm going to be honest. I don't know if this is a statement or a question. I also don't know what SX is. However I totally get your reasoning in not wanting to upgrade. Especially these days as this headset does not play well with the new generation of consoles seeing as they removed the optical port and that is the way this headset gets superior sound quality. @@1104ray I know the Gen 4's have had some firmware updates that have helped it play better with the newest consoles. As for the Gen 3 I'm not sure as I don't own them and I don't own an Xbox either. But yes, they should work. Either through USB (which won't give you as good of sound) or the better way is through optical (likely best bet is through your TV's optical port). Or you can buy an HDMI splitter with optical. Which Astro sells. Downsides are depending on your TV that may not work super well if you use that optical port. Downside of the optical splitter from Astro is it can limit HDMI 2.1 as it is 2.0. Downside of Gen 3 is I'm not sure if they are still doing firmware updates. Probably something special that you need to do on Xbox to get them to work to the best of their ability. As I know I had to change some settings on my PS5 (and my TV) to get it to work at its best. Google will be your best friend here. Or reaching out directly to Astro.

@@1104ray Yes, but it was a bit off-putting when the Series X first came out. After a while I realized there is a way to update the Firmware via your PC. Once it is up to date, all the audio will go through the USB instead of the Optical port (since there is no longer an optical port on the newer Xbox).

A question I have then is for gen 4 if I was using them on Xbox one what does this Dolby atmos do? I’m currently using gen 2’s with Dolby surround sound. Does this mean on gen 4’s use can use stereo, surround sound or atmos? Or is atmos just the newer surround sound? Confusing sorry but just curious aha.
@ThomasMuehler5 жыл бұрын
Dolby Atmos is through software so it should work with anything. Yes, the Gen 4 and the Gen 2 can use stereo, surround sound, or atmos. Atmos is just a newer but different version of surround sound that is also supposed to be better. I don't know enough about it all and haven't actually tested it all to give you my opinion on what is best. I've found most games don't support surround sound or atmos so I usually just stick with stereo for my gaming.

I have a question about the Gen 3's but I maybe its the same for Gen 4 too. So I've had the Gen 3 headset for a while now on PC and xbox. On PC is the dolby button worth using ? I swear I've always used this button but now turning it off, especially on RB6S, I can't help but wonder it sounds better with it off. Keep in mind I don't use dolby atmos for headphones, I don't have a separate sound card that supports DTS for the optical cable which i read on the forums here that you need.
@ThomasMuehler5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. If you are connected to your pc via usb the Dolby button should be turned OFF. As it is already activated for games that support it. Otherwise it will be stereo. So for example if the game you are playing is stereo then the headset will be stereo. If it is surround then it will be surround. As long as you don’t have the Dolby button pressed. The point of the button is for consoles. To toggle stereo and surround on and off.

What’s your opinion on the best headset for PS4? Also is wired or wireless better in performance?
@ThomasMuehler5 жыл бұрын
Hey Sleepy Sneakers, I can't say for sure which is the best headset for the PS4. Because even though it seems like a simple question it isn't. As each person is looking for specific things from their headphones. As for wired or wireless for performance. These days it doesn't matter too much. If you are wanting the absolute best quality and lowest delay wired is the way to go. But I would say the majority of people would not be able to tell a difference between the two for gaming headsets. Stay away from Bluetooth as that adds a lot of delay. But the wireless from the A50's or Steelseries Arctis Pro, and HyperX Cloud Flight are quite good. What I have learned testing a stupid amount of different headsets is there is no perfect headset. Every one of them has it's pros and cons. So you need to decide what is most important and go from there. @ThomasMuehler4 жыл бұрын
That's a question you'll have to answer for yourself. As it really comes down to personal preference, your setup, and the games you're playing. It sounds like a simple question but the technical aspect of it is lengthy because you need to have everything in the chain working for Atmos to work correctly. Also, most games already have a type of surround processing going on for stereo so adding another surround sound variant isn't needed. I personally only game with stereo for simplicity sake and it also usually provides the best sound.

@ThomasMuehler3 жыл бұрын
I have heard of that issue but not very often. Usually if that was the case it's a defect and you should RMA it. As that isn't how it's supposed to work. But no, I have not had any comments mentioning that with the Gen 4's. I've had to RMA my Gen 4's like 2 - 3 times and I haven't had that issue with any of them. I do have concerns about the QA for the Gen 4. I do still find them to be an amazing piece of hardware and love mine. But don't recommend buying them without a protection plan. As they have a serious issue where somehow the firmware gets corrupted and then you headset can't pair with the dock station and requires you to send them in. As you can't flash it yourself. That is why I've had to send mine in 2/3 times. The third time I believe was due to my headset itself not staying powered on. But my newest pair I haven't had any issues with and my first pair before i had the firmware issues lasted me about 8 months. But yeah, still a fantastic headset. But if you can't get a protection plan to make an easy exchange I'd skip them. As going through their support is a pain and takes a long time. Unless you are willing to risk it. But again, still think it's a fantastic product and when they work they can't be beat compared to other products in the same price point.

So, I currently have a 3year and 3 month old Astro A50s Gen 3 but the flippable microphone has started to short out/static to the point where it's not useable. I'm considering upgrading to the Gen 4 but am hesitant to sinking another ~$300 if this will just happen again. Is the Gen 4 mic replaceable or is the Gen 3 headset able to be opened and fixed? I contacted Astro support and they weren't helpful. Updated firmware, tried firmware that was in Beta.. ended by telling me it was out of warranty and I could visit the store.
@ThomasMuehler4 жыл бұрын
1. The microphone is the same as it is one the Gen 3 which means it isn't replaceable. 2. I would imagine that it would end up happening again. As this appears to be a semi-common defect of this headset. Especially, after prolonged use. As any joint that is used a lot will eventually break down. 3. Astro Support is a dumpster fire and are usually pretty useless unfortunately. I'm sorry you had to go through that. So, my recommendation would be to NOT buy the Gen 4. First because I think eventually you will run into the same issue. The second is because the Gen 4 has a lot of issues (that I wasn't aware of when I made this video). Since that time I've had to RMA my Gen 4 I think 3 - 4 times. Which is not a smooth process as you've already dealt with their support. I still find the Gen 4 to be superior to the Gen 3 and greatly enjoy using it. I still think it is one of the best headsets that I've used. However, with the issues the ONLY way I recommend picking one up is by getting a protection plan that you can say this is broken and the retail store itself just gives you a new one. Kind of like Best Buy's Geek Squad Protection Plan. I have a review coming up here soon of the Astro A20 Gen 2. That headset is very similar to the A50's but costs $120. That would be the direction I would actually recommend the most. I'd love to hear what you decide and how it ends up.

For me and what I wanted to use them for it was worth buying the A50 Gen 4. But only you can answer that question based on how much money you have and what you are looking to do with them. I will say they are a lot better than anything Steelseries has to offer. Can't stand their audio products.

@ThomasMuehler4 жыл бұрын
It should work just by USB alone. Meaning you don't need to having anything plugged into the optical port. Another alternative is if you are using a TV that will have an optical port (most of the time) and you can just plug the optical port into that and then have that plugged into your Astros. Last, you'd have to buy an adapter that has an optical attached to it. I know some HDMI switches have it and I think on Astro or something they are selling one that supports 4k 120 4.4.4.

I have Astro gen 3 a40 and I have to keep putting money into it is it worth it to upgrade to a50 gen 4 I think so is the sound quality better on the a50? If someone can tell me I would really appreciate it
@ThomasMuehler2 жыл бұрын
It’s a hard call. Personally, I found that I liked the A50 Gen 3 sound better than the A40 Gen 3. I then liked the Astro A50 Gen 4 better than the A50 Gen 3 sound wise (among other things listed in this video) better. Making the “upgrade” worth it to me. However, that is a HUGE price premium. The Astro A50 Gen 4 also has serious QA/QC issues that it sounds like you’re already running into with the Astro A40 Gen 3. If you are going to be spending that money have you considered the new SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro headset? I’ve heard good things. Haven’t tried them. Tend to not like SteelSeries Headsets at all if I’m being honest. As I think they tend to be overpriced and sound like trash. But plenty of other reviewers disagree with me on that. I’m interested in trying out the Arctis Nova Pro to see if sound has improved and I think it is the only direct competitor to the A50 Gen 4. With all that said I love my Astro A50 Gen 4. But they aren’t perfect and I worry a lot about QC issues. If that wasn’t a problem then I’d recommend them 10/10 times if money allows. But I’m not sure if the sound jump would be drastically noticeable. Through A - B comparisons I did notice difference personally. But ears are different from individual to individual. So, it really comes down to you and if you can afford it and if the pros outweigh the cons. You could, depending on where you live, buy them see if you like them and if you don’t return them. But if you buy them I’d recommend going somewhere that offers a warranty and that you can hotswap through them over going through Astro RMA.

Im mega tempted to upgrade from my A40trs + Mixamp to these for my xbox in preparation for series x. Question is whats the chat to game volume config like? The mixamp makes it hella easy
@ThomasMuehler4 жыл бұрын
So, the chat to volume configuration is pretty much the same as the A40 TR's. Except that it's on the headset itself. I think I mention it more in my actual review for these guys. It's on the right earcup and you just press it and it adjusts the volume for one or the other and then you use the knob on the right headset to increase volume. I would say the A40's do it a bit better because it's a knob but nearly the same in execution. However, I must warn you that I've had a few issues with the A50's this generation. I am actually on my third RMA. The first the headband broke, the second it lost it's firmware and wouldn't connect to the base station, and the third had power issues. I may have just gotten super unlucky but this generation seems to have a lot of issues from reviews that I've read. Which I go through at the end of my review for them. You can find it here if you are interested: (kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4mtmZ14j7Sfqqc)

@@ThomasMuehler I may just upgrade to the a40tr gen 4
@ThomasMuehler4 жыл бұрын
That may be the better route. I just think the A50's have a bit more issues than is typical for a premium headset should have, which makes me a bit hesitant to recommend. I wasn't having any issues before I made these reviews though. I haven't looked into the Gen4 A40's. But I would imagine they would be an upgrade to the Gen 3's just like the A50's were. I also don't think they would have as many issues as the issues that are happening with the the A50s have to due with the wireless aspect of them.

You should do some range tests on the difference with WiFi. Gen 3 won't even make it into my kitchen 5m away through two door ways without audio cutting out. Presume either router is interfering. Would be interested to see if the 2.4ghz has more range as most of my 2.4ghz devices are operational all the way round my house.
@ThomasMuehler5 жыл бұрын
I tested that and mentioned it very briefly in the video. With the Gen 3 when going out of my room to a fridge that is probably 30 feet away it would start to break up and lose connection. If I tried to go upstairs and walk around the rest of the house it would go in and out regularly. With the Gen 4 I was able to walk my entire house without any drops or problems with audio at all including to the corners. The base station would be located in the middle of my house in the basement. My wireless router is in my gaming room along with other stuff that can cause interference and I get less problems with the Gen 4 than the Gen 3. That can and will vary depending on user to user and their own setups. - 2.4 ghz has more range over 5 ghz. - 2.4 ghz is more congested than 5 ghz. - Theoretically, 2.4 ghz should have better range (especially through walls) but is prone to more interference since more products use 2.4 ghz band. - 5 ghz should have less range (especially through walls) but have less interference when inside a room. But from my testing I have had a better experience with the Gen 4 (2.4 ghz) than the Gen 3 (5 ghz) despite what the specs would say with the different bands. I could be incorrect with it being 2.4 ghz over 5 ghz. But I read that from a few different places but not from Astro themselves. As most would read that and think this is a negative and not a positive change which might be why they didn't include it in their specs. It is also gone from the box itself. Gen 3 says 5 ghz on it but the Gen 4 doesn't.

My god, how did I find you know😳 Hiya😁 new sub! Umm your video was insane, 10 times better than does I have seen, been looking for a headset for 6 months now XD. So my question is... Do you recommend these over the Corsair virtuoso in terms of like sound and everything or... are the virtuosos better? And I legit loved your video and youre pretty good at apex😉
@ThomasMuehler5 жыл бұрын
I appreciate you hitting that subscribe button. Welcome to the family. Hopefully, you continue to enjoy your time here. I also deeply appreciate the kind words. Means a lot. As for your question. That one is tough. As they both excel in different areas. They are both great. So it really depends on what exactly you are looking for. If you are wanting the best competitive headset (footsteps, directional sound) then the Virtuoso wins. If you are looking for the best well rounded headset the A50 wins. Sound Quality: - Competitive = Virtuoso - General Use/Single Player Gaming = Depends on your usage. As the Mixing and directional sound is superior on the Virtuoso but it is a very flat sounding headset where the A50 still has great sound but is a lot more fun. You won't always hear every detail and the directional quality is solid but not as good as the Virtuoso. The other way to put it is you have two friends. One is very analytical and intelligent (Virtuoso). The other is not as smart but is a lot of fun (A50). - Music = I'd go with the A50 because it is a more fun listen that draws you more into the music. But you may not hear every single detail. Comfort: 100% Astro's are a lot more comfortable. Build Quality: Virtuoso for sure. But the Astro's may feel cheap but are incredibly solid. Microphone: Tie really. They are both great. I prefer the Virtuoso because you can adjust it better to your mouth and it is detachable. Input: Virtuoso is through a USB dongle which means it only works on PS4 and PC. A50 is an optical port and/or USB. Meaning sound wise it will work on everything with an optical port. Meaning your TV, Xbox, PS4, PC, Cell Phone (wired in a way that I don't recommend) and also has an output so the sound card functionality makes this shine. Meaning if you also listen to speakers you can have it plugged into the Astro's which then you can just put them on and your good to go or you can turn on your speakers and you're good to go. No changing settings. So Astro's destroy the Virtuoso in this aspect. Charging: Astro's destroy the Virtuoso again. They are always charged because you put them away in their base station when done which charges them up. You have to remember to charge the Virtuoso. Software: Both have equalizers that you can adjust. ZaliaS? I think that is his name or close enough. Makes amazing profiles for the Astro's to get teh most out of the sound. Price: Virtuoso is considerably cheaper than the A50's. Also, the A50 Gen 4 has been having some software issues. I think an update just came out that seems to have fixed most of them but something to keep in mind. Support: Corsairs support is trash that is on fire. It's probably one of the worst I've ever dealt with. So just pray your product doesn't break. Astro's aren't amazing either but it's a lot better. I probably missed a bunch of stuff but for a quickish run down that's what I got. Let me know if you have any other questions.

@ThomasMuehler5 жыл бұрын
I used to be obsessed with 7.1 surround sound and all that. But after testing it out a lot I’ve found that regular stereo is a lot better in every sense. I haven’t tried Dolby atmos at all really. The little that I did I didn’t think it was revolutionary. But there are only a small handful of stuff that supports it. So you have to make sure that everything alines or it won’t make any difference and could actually end up making things worse. So for simplicity sake I usually just stay with plain ol stereo. But personal preference plays a big roll along with Individuals ears. I don’t think mine do well with simulated surround sound. I do think it’s still worth it for actual speaker setups though.

@ThomasMuehler Жыл бұрын
You can get it to work. But I don't think it works well (as the sound quality just never seems to be as good as if I am on PC and/or a supported old console). Especially, with how much competition is in the headset space now spending the money for these you get an inferior product. I'd recommend the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless (previous headset I've been using) but recently moved to the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro (as the sound quality and microphone is better. But build quality and navigation and stuff goes to the Nova Pro Wireless). 1. But to get back to the question. I can't remember if USB works. I think it does but again, the sound quality you get from that connection isn't the best and not indicative of the price point. 2. I found the better way to connect it is to use your TV's optical audio port. Then the USB for microphone. But in the settings for the PS5 you need to pick USB for microphone. Then your TV or optical for sound. Otherwise, you are using the USB sound instead. As due to how this headset works it is supposed to be used via optical port which gives you a lot better sound. As the USB and the optical port uses different parts of the internals and they used higher quality parts for the optical part. I'm not sure how clear all that is. As I've got a migraine and can't tell if I'm making any sense. So if you have any additional questions or further clarification let me know.

What I don't understand from companies these days is people like self description. So, when a company releases a headset in one color it makes no sense to me. Just got the gen 4 a50's my 1st pair of premium headset and the one thing that is utterly surprising to me is for the $300 left kidney they charge for this thing is the lack of Bluetooth support yes I understand it's a gaming headset but really??? Bluetooth is pretty much standard at this point it's like they thought nobody uses Bluetooth anymore so let's leave it out
@ThomasMuehler Жыл бұрын
Surprisingly, these actually came out before Bluetooth was commonplace on headsets. Which is why they don't have them as it just wasn't a thing until just recently. But I do agree with you. I've been waiting for a Gen 5 for a long time that updates them into more modern things that you find in todays headsets.

That is funny because everything you said is not correct for me, The Gen 4's actually has worse sound quality and the details are no where to be seen. I played r6 siege with the new gen 4 and when I shot my weapon, the sound sounded muffled and it sounded as if my gun was being shot a thousand miles away from my mic. The mic makes the games sound muffled and its like are you going deaf but I have 2020 hearing and it is just the mic. Yes the party chat sounds the same as the General 3's for the most part except you can tell with certain people talking it could sound worse than the gen 3's., When your not in a game the xbox home sounds sound the same and the only thing that the gen 4's is better at is that your friends can hear you speak more clear. So it is definitely not worth the upgrade at all. The a40's without mix amp is exactly how the gen 4's sound. The gen 4's has mix amp built in and it still is bad. The gen 4's also limits how high you can raise your volume. Since the quality suck I want to raise the volume but it doesn't go higher. This mic if plugged out of a game mid game can cause your internet to crash and can cause the servers of the people your playing with to crash unless you reset your xbox.
@ThomasMuehler5 жыл бұрын
EDIT: Previously I said "In order to have a fair comparison in sound you have to put both of your headsets with the exact same settings via Astro Command Center. You also have to make sure that the decibels are the same. Otherwise the sound test is invalid as our ears are super sensitive." You can see the comment below for my reasoning prior and after and how it was flawed here. Changed to: To try and have as objective of a comparison as possible try to match decibels. As a change in this can make a big difference as our ears are super sensitive. We also get used to a way something is supposed to sound and when that is changed we can consider it sounding "worse". When after some time it could sound better. With that said, sound is such a subjective thing that it is hard to objectively judge, unless all factors are exactly (or nearly) the same. Perhaps the Gen 3 does sound better than the Gen 4 to you. From my testing that wasn't the case. I don't understand what you are talking about regarding the mic? That sounds seem like they were recorded super far away from the microphone? I've also heard almost across the board that the mic from the Gen 4 is vastly superior to the Gen 3's. As they were the weakest link in the previous generation. But the location you have your mic (which most people don't do right), the volume you speak (which most people also don't do right), and your own voice nuances can make a microphone sound better or worse. Not saying you are doing these things wrong. But it's what I've found for the mass majority of people. Which is why I put a microphone test that showed both of the microphones. Everyone has come back that they like the Gen 4 over the Gen 3. The Gen 4 on Xbox also has had a lot of firmware issues. They recently released an update which improved how loud the headset can go among other things. So if you haven't updated you headset that should help. This is done via Astro Command Center. I did all my testing on the PS4/PC version. Which has fared a lot better than the Xbox/PC version. They also do this to limit the sound from reaching over a certain decibel range to prevent hearing damage. As most people just crank it to max which can be terrible for your hearing. Although, they were a bit off this time around (xbox wise) at least. As for the mic is plugged out of game mid game. Is not a good sentence so I don't know what you are saying. As for it crashing your internet, servers, and the people playing with you is also just not possible. It could cause your Xbox to have a critical audio failure which could make your Xbox need to shut down. But it wouldn't have anything to do with the internet access to your house, others houses, or your friends. To end this. You may have also got a defective unit. Which happens unfortunately.

@@ThomasMuehler old post resurrected...not true. You can't put them on the same settings for a fair comparison. They are made to perform differently on different settings, not the same. If they have different drivers, chipsets, etc...you cannot expect the same results with the same settings on each., It's like comparing 2 two different vehicles both with 6 cylinder motors using 93 octane gas. They are built differently, timing different high / low octane may negatively affect as one may be designed to run off a specific octane. I think you get the point, i hope anyway.
@ThomasMuehler3 жыл бұрын
@@budkole Yes, different drivers will have a different sound signatures. I wasn't expecting them to perform the same by "equalizing" the sound but try to level the playing field a bit to see how well each of them does in the three main sound ranges (bass, mids, treble) by controlling as many variables as I could. Especially, as they both have the same equalizer and are both from Astro with similar drivers (which was a flawed thought process). But I do agree that probably wasn't the best option for a comparison. As if they are already treble focused and I adjust the EQ it could help or hinder it. But again, I wasn't trying to make them perform the same. But see if by adding the same flavoring how they both react to that flavoring and draw conclusions from that. I also tested them with their default "astro" settings. But I do understand what you are saying. How would you suggest I go about doing a fair comparison in the future?
@budkole3 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasMuehler Hi, thanks for the respectful reply! Also, I was not trying to be disrespectful either. I really don't know how other than to just equalize each separately to their strengths and report. Your review just gives the impression that Gen4 is night and day better than the Gen3 which is totally false. It really comes down to how the sound is processed and equalized. Soundwise, the Gen4 is not better than the Gen3, moreover the Gen3 is not better than the Gen4. Not that it matters, but it actually cost less money to produce the Gen 4! Which means a bigger bottom line to the mfg. Marketing jargon in order to make a cheaper product is all the rage in sales, no different with Astro. Another example, because the Gen4 now runs on 2.5k mhz, which is the same a most wifi...digital interference is a huge issue there whereas the Gen3 was something like 5.2 mhz (don't quote me) which was in a range somewhat of its own...that alone was a cost saving measures by Astro. All in all, I love you style and how you make the videos and would definitely like to thank you for taking the time to do them, it's much appreciated.

@@budkole I'm always open for constructive criticism. So, I appreciate the call out. Didn't pick up on any disrespect. I saw a noticeable and appreciable difference in sound with the Gen 4 vs the Gen 3. Is it night and day? Absolutely not. But it was a noticeable bump in my opinion. Even after trying to tune the Gen 3 to sound the best they could I found the Gen 4 still sounded better and I'm willing to pay for that. But I was able to sell my old Astros for a good price and picked up the Gen 4's on sale so I didn't pay all that much extra. But price to benefit ratio always comes down to personal preference. Some people don't have the money, they don't care, they don't use them enough to justify it, they found a better deal, don't like the updated sound siganture, have gotten used to the other sound and don't want to change, or don't have the ears to notice the difference. All of which are perfectly valid as a consumer. As a reviewer my job is to discuss my findings and pass it on so the consumer can make a more informed decision. If I came across as saying it was dramatic I apologize. But I would say I noticed a mild/moderate difference. I don't really have a response for increased profit margin. I agree, it's all the rage. I can see the pros and cons assocaited with that as well. In the end I'm on the fence and could go either way with agreeing or disagreeing. The change in mhz could also be cost saving. But there are more techincal aspects behind that as well that I mention in the review. And some other things I didn't mention. Appreciate the discourse. Always enjoyable. If you have anything else to say or talk about just reply back. Otherwise, I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day/week and a great Christmas and New Year.

2.4ghz is better for latency but seems most wireless things run on it will get more interference.... The marketing is rubbish on that quote
@ThomasMuehler Жыл бұрын
I'm going to be honest I don't fully understand your point. Most wireless peripherals these days use 2.4 GHz because it is fast. But due to that it is more susceptible to interference. 5 GHz was what they used to use. But uses more power and has decreased range over 2.4 GHz. Speed of 5 GHz tends to be faster though (at least for wireless networks) but not sure how much that matters for a wireless peripheral that is likely exceeding the theoretical max speeds anyway.
@davidwithey6036 Жыл бұрын
@@ThomasMuehler My point is mate if you using it for gaming do you want it to be a steady connection even if a little slower fast enough to send audio signals with no noticeable differences in latency but have less of a range. with the 5Ghz Or would you want a 2.4ghz less latency but if in a area with a few routers at 2.4ghz your going to get interference which will make the less latency pointless. let alone other wireless devices around the area as well. 2.4Ghz old tech and most things wireless use it. pointless having it, new gaming headsets should have moved to 6ghz for price paying. The latest tech and less likely for interference
@ThomasMuehler Жыл бұрын
@@davidwithey6036 I agree it would be nice to have some wireless tech at 6 GHz, but I would imagine the reason why that isn’t the case has to do with regulations and perhaps something else that we aren’t aware of as normal consumers. That 6 GHz would be especially nice for higher tiered headsets to help set them apart from lower tier. Astro used to do 5 GHz so them switching to 2.4 GHz something must have happened. Maybe they ran out of licensing for the 5 GHz or something I’m not sure. Also, this headset isn’t “new”. It’s extremely old as they came out in 2019. These days 5 GHz is also a very congested band as well. As nearly all routers use it. Where only legacy devices are on 2.4 GHz. So some of the thought process could be that lower tiered less hungry tech is on that band over 5 GHz. I have no idea. But you bring up some good points.
@davidwithey6036 Жыл бұрын
@@ThomasMuehler Maybe so I can't argue there maybe something we don't know on 6G i would have thought if routers are allowed to be 6G then other devices are allowed, otherwise how can they connect on the 6G band wave. I don't know in your country but here in UK all routers send a 2.4G signal but only 50% send 5G signal. The routers that do end both signals however. ISP just want to spend less as they can on routers. let alone anything bluetooth is on 2.4G far as am aware. The newer one may have upgraded drivers but the 2.4G band uses is a deal breaker for me personally I'll stick to my Gen3
@ThomasMuehler Жыл бұрын
@@davidwithey6036 I think Routers get some special treatment (and products that connect to it) and are allowed 6G where other peripherals aren't (yet). But I could be wrong. I just know there are a lot of regulations (at least in the US) about certain signals. As far as I know if you have a semi-modern router in the US it has both 2.4 and 5 all the time. With the newest ones having the 6. Gen 3 are excellent and you gotta do what is best for you. The Gen 4 also have some issues with the base station and it will brick the device. Which is super frustrating. I've been waiting on Astro/Logitech to come out with a Gen 5 for a long time that has modern features. But haven't heard anything yet.

Can someone inform me how stereo sound could give better directional than surround sound? He says it about at the 3:00 mark
@ThomasMuehler4 жыл бұрын
It's a very hard question to answer fully as the amount scientific crap that goes into it is lengthy. The simple high level answer is that most games aren't even released in surround sound anymore. Such as PUBG, Fortnite, Valorant, and a bunch of others. Instead they are using HRTF built into their game sound already which is surround sound. Which means if you use surround sound that you will get worse sound than with stereo as it is taking two sound formats that don't work with each other giving you worse sound. Another quick thing is that everything in the chain needs to be surround sound and also the right type of surround sound (DTS vs Dolby) in order to work. Which also limits which games work. Most people have their stuff hooked up incorrectly so aren't actually getting surround sound anyways which is giving them worse sound than stereo would. As the game is sending stereo signals, the headset is then set to surround which creates 7.1 speakers but only 2 of them are actually getting a correct sound. This limits your overall soundstage and directional accuracy as its sending incorrect information. Third, just the way that virtual surround sound works is complicated and a lot of times ends up warping the sound the be less accurate. Forth, my testing in games, movies, and music was worse with surround than it was with stereo. Once again for more technical reasons than I feel like getting into on a KZbin comment. I suggest doing some research on why Surround Sound is more of a gimmick/marketing strategy. Don't get me wrong. When everything is working correctly it can be amazing and better than stereo. The problem is that it doesn't happen very often. I also suggest watching this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4anhZ-slsydgKM with surround sound off. That pretty much sums everything up.
