Makes me wonder if Intel will make a refresh of broadwell with a sort of devil's canyon type, and if the z97 boards will be compatible.

Thanks for this great review, Chris. Would you dissuade people from using this mobo in a higher- end gaming build, or is it actually perfect for one? I'm not one to go for all of the bling that comes with "gaming" series mobos.
@TechUploaded
@TechUploaded 10 жыл бұрын
It would be a great motherboard for a gaming setup. ASUS JJ said a very large install base for the WS series is gamers and extreme overclockers.

Very nice vid , when are you going to upload the video with the entire build ? thanks :)

It will probably be about a month before that goes up. I have to wait for my pre-ordered 4790K chip to arrive first and that isn't shipping until the end of the month.

How many SATA hard drives can be connected at the same time? I want to expand from my current M2 and 3 SATA drives setup.

What would you recommend between your h440 build and using this board for a gaming/light editing/3d render as well?
@TechUploaded
@TechUploaded 10 жыл бұрын
Either board will work for you but where the WS starts to show its benefits is when you start looking at doing always on workstation type of application, sustained heavy loads such as hours and hours of rendering, installing numerous PCIe x16 cards or advanced level cards such as hardware RAID or render / computational cards or server level applications with the need for full Xeon support. The more advanced power delivery system of the WS is well suited for heavy use. Unless you are going to be doing lots of 3D rendering, the VII Hero will serve you well. However, I'm also told extreme overclockers love the WS board due to it's high end power system.

Couple questions. Does this board also have the UEFI where you can overclock with the same options as in the ROG boards, and secondly is the overclocking you spoke of a program that runs in Windows?
@TechUploaded
@TechUploaded 10 жыл бұрын
The UEFI is pretty much the same across the board with the ASUS Z97 series. I believe the WS boots into easy mode by default while the ROG takes you into advanced and has that red color scheme to match the ROG look. While you can do the CPU level up overclock in the UEFI, the intelligent auto overclock is achieved through AI Suite 3.

Will this mobo support the 212 Evo or the DH 14 and DH15? I was originally thinking of using the H100i but now I'm thinking the 212 Evo would be fine assuming it fits. So what is our hsf cooling options with this mobo?
@TechUploaded
@TechUploaded 10 жыл бұрын
Yep, it will work with any of those coolers. The heat sinks on the motherboard aren't much taller than those on the Maximus VII Hero and I have used the 212 EVO and NH-D15 on that board with no problems.

Skott62 An update. My Z97 WS mobo was DOA. Needed to RMA it. NE told me I would have to contact ASUS to get it resolved originally. Contacted ASUS and they told me it was a refurbished mobo. They checked the serial number on the mobo. Funny thing is that it came in a brand new unopened retail box. SO went back to NE and told them what ASUS told me. They agreed to RMA it for a new mobo. Not sure how a refurbished mobo got into a retail box. Both companies pointing the finger at each other but I will get a new mobo at least. Hopefully the second one is good. And, yes, the 212 Evo does fit the mobo.

The original mobo NewEgg sent me was a refurbished mobo in a new retail package. On top of that it was broken (DOA)Took me two months to get a proper retail mobo. The new mobo works like a charm though.

Will Z97 really support broadwell? Is this confirmed by intel?
@TechUploaded
@TechUploaded 10 жыл бұрын
Yep. It's official. There won't be another Intel chipset (X99 and Haswell-E excluded) until Skylake. Those are rumored to be based off the 100-series chipset and will use DDR4. Devil's Canyon and Broadwell are 9-series chips.
