24:39 - I'm SURE that originally, Safin was supposed to be Dr No. In the books, Dr No had his heart on the other side of his body. That, combined with the Noh mask, the fact that the movie was called NO Time to Die, etc, and I'm sure that was the original plan, but for whatever reason, they changed their mind, leaving as you say zero payoff for that moment.

I always figured he had a bulletproof vest on under the coat, and a shot just hit him in an unprotected area, as there is not a huge amount of blood, or blood on his jacket where he was hit over the heart. The shots hitting the vest, plus the drop off the balcony both compound to knock him unconscious for the extended amount of time. Just my interpretation of the scene.

That line at 1:54:45 is 'Die Blofeld, die.' which is a direct quote from the scene in the Fleming novel 'You Only Live Twice' where Bond strangles and kills Blofeld. It's a tip of the hat for readers of the novels. Thanks for the new episode, brilliant and interesting as always.

I read recently that apparently there are a number of references to the book version of "You Only Live Twice", in that Blofeld is hiding out in Japan under an assumed identity, but is nicknamed by the locals "Dr Poison", in both of them Bond becomes a father, although he doesn't learn about it in the book, and even M's quote at the end, "The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time", which is from Jack London, is used in the book in the same context, said at a wake for Bond (although in the book they just think he's dead).

There are two options I'd love to see the Bond films go. a) Prequel: WWII Bond. Pre-00 section, Naval Commando. b) Complete troll: The open the next movie with the revelation that Bomb is immune to explosions. The explosion did kill all the nano-bots in Bond. Bond is still played by Craig. However, in the first act Madeline and Mathilde get eaten by a Diplodocus, revealing the movies villain. Who is a Diplodocus.

For b, the movie is about Bond living off the grid, pretending to be dead again. And he comes back to MI6 for one more mission. And he dies again, but this time succumbing to his wounds in a church, because, y’know… every movie has to one up the previous movie’s conclusive ending even more conclusively.

I haven't seen the film, so maybe the "They're nanobots" thing is way more integrated than this, but is it at all possible that Heracles was a chemical weapon originally but got re-written because "A strange new virus that spreads quickly and could threaten the entire world" was a little too... real?

Here's my key takeaway of this series: Every new Bond actor's first movie is great (excluding non-Eon movies). Whenever an actor plays Bond for multiple movies, at least one of those movies is subpar. Thus, I hereby proclaim that future Bond movies should recast the lead role in every movie. I also proclaim that George Lazenby made the right call when he left the series after just one movie.

24:28 "It really feels like he's dead and comes back to life" - this is absolutely how I read it when I was watching the first time. And then later on in the cold open, when Bond gets blown up at Vesper's grave, and he's down and then suddenly leaps back to consciousness with _the same action_ of going from lying down seemingly dead, snapping to eyes wide open, sharply inhaling... I absolutely thought they were doing a Thing. Like, is this why it's No Time to Die? Because something something spy magic and now Bond and this masked assassin are unkillable? But no, it absolutely does not come up again.

Love that this came out this morning, just finished relistening to the series podcasting it at work. A nice surprise after From Relisten From Rewatch With Love With Love. Looking forward to the From Replay With Love if it happens, the Goldeneye 64 game could almost be a short series on it's own with how much they put in with the pre-title missions (three entire levels!), the missions before the start of the movie (another three levels!) and then just expanding Bond's personal appearances in the story, in comparison to the movie. It winds up doing weirdly well as a character arc for Bond, possibly what the movie intended.

This series and the Kill James Bond podcast are perfect companion pieces, in my opinion. This podcast to embrace the fun action and humor, to evaluate the decisions as films - and the other to engage with the social baggage that comes with Bond. Unexpected side effect of both: greatly increased appreciation for Timothy Dalton's Bond.

On the subject of the cats, in the last movie he calls out that he has two cats and himself to feed, so Q actually has two hairless sphinx cats that perfectly troll him by replacing each other on the table everyone he turns around. And as an owner of three cats, this is probably the most accurate portrayal of cats in film I have seen so far. I was also so confused in the Astin Martin scene, cause I was like "who is driving Bond around London" until I realized it was a temporal cut. Very odd choice IMO. Anyway, thank you for doing this, it has been a spectacular ride. Watching your upbeat view of the best of Bond across from a similar rewatch that dives deeper into the cultural issues around Bond has been a fantastic experience. Loved this podcast series. Coming out of the movie, I though it was pretty good. Looking back on it and hearing Matt's gripes has made the movie sour on me. Though I don't have as much disdain for the movie as Matt does, I agree with all his points. Now of the topic of a new movie series that you guys could cover if you wanted to continue that I think would be interesting and fun would be the Star Trek movies. I don't know how much Matt is into Star Trek but I know Graham loves it and it would be interesting to look at the differences between the Original Series movies, the Next Generation movies, and the JJ Abrams movies. Just a thought. The Fast & Furious series would also work, but I know Andrew already has a podcast about that.

Remember how Rise of Skywalker had a scene that served as a self-referential review? In Last Jedi, Kylo Ren smashes his helmet, but in Rise of Skywalker, they put it back together with red goo in all the cracks? They broke something ON PURPOSE, regretted it, put it back together as best they could... and now the cracks are all I can see. I've got one of those for No Time To Die. The good guys develop a nanomachine plague that can kill anyone based on their genetic code for 'defense.' And as Yahtzee said in his Killzone: Shadow Fall review in response to another gene-targeting plague, "And I have a bottle of maple syrup for defense against pancakes." But ANYWAY... This is a plan that is indistinguishable from something that the bad guys would have come up with in any other Bond film. But the good guys did it anyway for whatever goddamn reason. And it finally puts Bond, the unstoppable and un-lose-able badass, into an unwinnable situation that ends all our fun. Maybe... if THAT was the best plan the people in charge came up with... maybe they shouldn't be in charge anymore. Thank you so much for the podcast, Graham and Matt. It has been a thrill.

Weirdly part of the problem I think is that James Bond movies are inconsistent with showing blood. I watched the movie last night and when Madeleine is dragging him through the snow there's only a tiny trail of blood where it look like she winged him. If Bond movies were more consistent with blood (since there's less than there should be) it would make it clear that he was down because he fell and presumably got knocked out rather than him shrugging off bullets to vital organs.

Awesome episode guys! I won't lie, I've been waiting for this one eagerly ever since I watched the movie myself. And despite your... *Mixed* take on the movie, I think y'all delivered! One thing though, and I wanna preface that it's not a knock against either of you, but they actually DO talk about Safin's plan in the movie, mentioned largely by the evil scientist guy as Nomi is ferrying him out, and also indirectly by Safin in the scene where he let's Madeline go when he mentions a "buyer": He's planning to SELL different strains of Heracles to world governments and other seedy organizations. Each setup in the lab is a variant coded to a different demographic, so no matter who the shady organization in question wants genocided, he'd have the option in stock to sell. Now, of course, this idea is very, VERY STUPID when you think about it for even a minute. Given that there's basically no way you could sell a kind of Heracles to one person without revealing that you have every OTHER kind also in stock. A thing which would then prompt *everyone* you don't sell stock to to hunt you down like a rabid dog and/or bomb you into oblivion to stop you from selling their demise. Or even prompt people who *buy from you* to kill you after the deal so you don't immediately turn around and sell a strain that kills THEM to the next buyer (I imagine the Neo-Nazis trying to eradicate all other races wouldn't react *well* to knowing you have Anti-Caucasian Heracles on tap, for instance). So yeah. It's not that he DIDN'T state his motive, it's just that the motive wasn't stated very emphatically, and the motive stated is actually very, VERY ludicrous when really properly considered.

Great pod - been looking forward to this for a while. Some observations of note: There's quite a few throwbacks to a lot of th past bonds - some larger and more subtle. Here's a few just from what I heard from the pod: 56:47 - The statue in the opening titles is a reference to OHMSS' opening title 1:31:41 - the 'Vanquish V8' mentioned is the Aston Martin V8 Vantage Series II from Living Daylights 2:13:53 - Bond letting the car roll and kill a bad guy is a nod to Roger Moore coldly kicking the car off the cliff in 'For You Eyes Only' 2:47:03 - The passage read by M originated from Jack London. This passage was also used for Bond's obituary in the original novel of 'You Only Live Twice' More speculatively, there are a lot nods to the 'Metal Gear Solid' series: - The use of nano machines as an assassination tool is similar to FOXDIE - Nomi acting as the proxy the 'Raiden' character being the capable replacement - The underwater infiltration into Safin's base broadly resembles the intro from MGS1 - The 'Q-dar' device has elements of the 'Soliton' radar Solid Snake uses to navigate the environment - The Q/Bond interaction during the base infiltration is similar to Otacon/Snake's interaction in Metal Gear Solid 1/2 - The long-take gunfight up the circular stairs mimics a scene in the MGS 1 where snake has to run up a tower dispatching numerous genome soldiers - The ladder climb at the end just before the air strike hits mimics that of Big Boss climbing up the silo ladder in MGS 3 - Madeleine telling Mathilde, about Bond and his legacy mirrors MGS 4 where Otacon's monologues about preserving Snake's legacy

1:48:45 in one of the Connery movies, I think Thunderball, M assigns every 00 agent to the mission at hand (London and DC being held hostage with nukes by SPECTRE), and sends them around the world looking for clues. IIRC Bond just ignores his assignment and tracks down a lead he already had.

Had to stop at 15 min due to not having seen the movie yet but mmm I missed these. Also the stills chosen as commentary for the banter is just chefs kiss.

The title sequence referencing Casino Royale reminds me of something that was mentioned in the episode for Die Another Day, where that movie's title sequence referenced GoldenEye, and now I'm wondering about those parallels lol

Glad you guys are doing an episode on this movie! I missed listening to your recounts of the Bond movies every week haha. Normally I’d be surprised that Matt doesn’t really like the movie but this movie has divided Bond fans so much I can’t be.

Listening to this while cleaning, and every time they say Nomi I kept picturing KLAUS Nomi, which would have been... a very different movie.

1:25:03 Real talk, the person opposite Primo/Cyclops here (also in shades) looked so cool I immediately noticed them and wished they'd be in more of the movie EDIT: Saw this movie with my partner and in-laws, and I was the only one who had seen the previous movies (+ this podcast had refreshed my memory) and there's so many references that they didn't get and it took them out of it a lot. Like they didn't even remember Blofeld

And here I was wondering when you guys will get to No Time to Die. Thank you gentlemen, for the ride from the start to the latest one thus far. I hope to hear your opinions, if you ever do this, on the next entry when it comes. I appreciate you, Graham and Matt

I'll be up front, I haven't watched it yet and I haven't seen the movie either, I've just been hanging on to this comment for about a year so here we go: This is by far the best James Bond podcast I've ever listened to. (Technically That's only 2 and I gave up on the Nerdist one when they brought on guests that didn't even watch the movies and started bitching at listeners that criticized them for it.) I'll be back when I find the time to get caught up.

This has been a fun experience, even as I'm someone who has never watched a single Bond film. Would certainly be interested in any further film podcasting from the duo of Gram and Matt, or maybe even Matt and other LRR members as appropriate. Basically, Matt Wiggins film podcasts with LRR interest me

A thing these podcasts made me realize is that Daniel Craig has been really underappreciated and is actually a cool Bond and even moreso behind the scenes with his recomendations for casting and writers and getting them work on a Big Name franchise, which I can appreciate and I love these podcasts. Also him staunchly defending the women who get work on or in the movies, even with the actress to whom he passed the torch by saying that she should have a part just as big as Bond instead of being Bond and having to face the misogony from terrible fans.

Safin and this movie have number of connections to the Fleming novel, You Only Live Twice. The garden of death and the Japan locale are directly from the novel. Blofeld, who was the villain of the book, has adopted a very Japanese aesthetic (Japanese castle, samurai armour, etc.).

Spectre already gave Craig the classic gun barrell opening before this one did. Just sayin’.
