Atari SUSPENDS Manufacturing of the VCS. What's Next?

The Atari VCS was announced in 2018 and release at the end of 2020. The system was controversial because of the Indigogo crowdsourcing campaign. Despite the challenges, Atari managed to release the system to backers and has since developed a dedicated fanbase.
However in 2022 Atari announced during their earnings report that hardware revenue was down 92 percent from last year and they have since suspended manufacturing of the Atari VCS and are exploring Atari VCS adjacent hardware avenues.
What does that mean? What will we see in 2023? Will the Atari VCS have a handheld successor similar to the Steam Deck? Will we see a Steam Deck in the form factor of a retro handheld like the Atari Lynx that plays a version of Steam OS? It's fun to speculate.

Do you think we'll see an Atari handheld that is similar to the Steam Deck? What are your predictions?

I think it's a good idea if they would partner with some of the steam deck competitors that are smaller like that Aya Neo?? company. I don't really follow it so I'm unsure if I got the name right. Anyway, since they already know about that kind of thing, Atari should look to them. It could have the same specs as the VCS b/c I can't imagine that level of hardware has gotten that expensive. It would be nice if like the VCS, the RAM is expandable, but as a handheld, I could see that not being an option. It could offer a level of control similar to that arcade stick which I bought that you referenced with a trackball and could put a spinner around the trackball if designed carefully I bet. It could be a way to compete with xbox and sony now no longer bound by their consoles. I don't even think Atari OS would have to be modified much since its icons are fairly large/legible.

They need to stop with the retro shit. I love Atari, but I don't need any more ways to play 2600 games. If they are going to exist at least make modern games. I don't need a new way to play old Lynx games. There is no way in hell they can even expect to exist when they keep putting out the same shit. For fucks sake.

What point is there for a new lynx? They couldn't fully support the VCS. Sadly Atari doesn't want to put up money to support their own ecosystem by selling all their games on switch and Steam and other consoles. So really why? In the end it will just be more cash grabs of old games they have on a million other devices or plug in plays. They had a short window of opportunity to lure more people to their system and they blew it by offering everything they made on better platforms. So no it's over actually no it was DOA to begin with. They shut off the manufacturing of the VCS because they haven't sold any of their current stock that is the main reason why their annual report is at a massive loss. Its because there is literally no incentive to own one. This is of their own doing. This is why people like myself rarely turned the stupid thing on. Only once in a while just to see what single game might have turned up that month on their store and often disappointed it wasn't what you wanted or you found out it's a 3 year old steam Indie game for double what it was going for on steam. So out of careful consideration I sold mine. I don't believe they will be anything they once were. The days of a dedicated consoles like the jaguar or Lynx are long gone. Atari, without fail will win one award that is, the 1st console in history to not ever have one exclusive game something not even the Ouya or Nuon even achieved.

atari should ideally release a atari handheld game system before the switch 2 and steam deck 2 and get a headstart also this theoretical atari handheld game system should have exclusive atari games made for it like if you agree

I'm not sure Atari ever even sold out their first production run. Mine is a serviceable Windows PC that I use for work. I enjoy mine and might even consider a second one for a living room PC, streaming device at the right price. I still have the memory from when I upgraded my original VCS, so based model for $199 upgraded to 8GB might work for that purpose. But it isn't for everybody and sometimes the OS seems a little rough around the edges.

NGL , I would pre-order a wood grain Evercade EXP with Atari logos . Since there’ve been 5 Atari carts on evercade I don’t think it’s totally out of the question. I could see Atari finding some type of steamdeck competitor system like the logitech G cloud and slapping Atari logos on it and giving it the Atari OS and calling it a day .

They don't advertise enough, which is inexcusable for known brands like Atari with social media and youtube interviews being essentially free potential marketing. The current CEO supposedly wants to buy Atari so I don't think it is impossible to think he may be trying to tank the stock so he could buy it at a great deal.

@@linuxlover_8436 Frankly speaking, the VCS's marketing has always been its Achilles' heel; to the average gamer it looks like an underpowered console with a library mostly consisting of old 2600/Arcade games and the occasional remake, and I feel like if Atari leaned in more on it being a gaming mini PC from the start it would've been more successful. I really hope the complimentary hardware they're working on is in line with stepping away from marketing it as a console
