True. I am also impressed by Hongjoons comment, but to be real. Comments like his from idols are a rarity even now. Sad thing is kpop culture is mass manufactured most everyone has even forgotten about the non apologies from other idols/companies who constantly use CA shamelessly. YG(BP,2ne1,iKon,Mino) SM too long a list...damn near every company and artist. And they can't say just black people are being sensitive about it. I see a lot of other cultures getting fed up with it too. Middle Eastern, Polynesian, South East Asian. They seem to show Cultural Appreciation when it comes to Latin cultures in terms of dance/lyricism. So they must know the difference.

As a black atiny, I voiced my sadness about the hairstyle and why it wasn't appropriate. When KQ released the statement, I felt better but not completely due to the fact they weren't going to really do anything about the hair. I spent a few days thinking about their statement and coming up with my own opinion on the matter. I didn't just want to agree with one specific side without doing my own research and thinking into it. I finally came to the conclusion to accept the apology, though I do not agree and will not tolerate cultural appropriation. The second I said my opinion on social media, I was attacked by so many people. They were calling me racist and selfish. It hurt to think that, as a person who's culture is being abused and ridiculed, I was called racist. I had people asking me to send proof that I was really black. Some other black atiny I'm close with had the same experience. We were being told how to feel by some people who weren't even black. I hate that people feel the need to speak for the black community. We have our own opinions and we don't always agree with each other. People need to realize we have minds of our own. All the black atiny who fought hard for more change with HJs hairstyle, I have so much respect for. Same with those who accepted the apology. Both sides are still human. I hate when people gatekeep and try to make decisions for others because they feel a certain way when it's opposing the popular side. I can only hope and pray that things change. And that KQ actually keeps their word and don't use things from other cultures again. Also why did people have to attack HJ? He's not the one who should be attacked and harassed. Honestly, no one should be attacked and harassed. I hope that in the future, people are more civil. Being aggressive and hateful will get us nowhere. Anyway, let's all work together to stop cultural appropriation in the kpop industry. 💙 and thank you for this video! I agree with a lot of your opinions and I'm glad you covered this. Keep it up!

Exactly. KQ already knew how people felt about the hair. I’m convinced they did it for publicity via Black Outrage but it ended up backfiring on them. They probably thought it would pass because Zico still has a flourishing career. Ateez is more international than Zico right now though. So hopefully kq has seen such won’t work for them and won’t do it again, especially after making their blm statement. And I’m glad Ateez got to learn as well so they can also put their feet down if KQ tries to do anything similar.

As a black Atiny here since pre-debut, I do think ATEEZ was sincere and I do think they're trying to learn. Hongjoong talked about race long before this mv however, CA was not a part of that as I don't think that ever crossed their minds. It was more in the sense of treating people as people. That cb was very ugly for multiple reasons. People always try to silence when it's CA. That's nothing new. I've been into kpop 8 years and most times, there's no apology at all. At the same time Hongjoong was getting death threats from all types of fandoms, another idol's picture was being circulated with braids and the comments from various fandoms was oh, sorry, don't call me a coon, he looks so good and of course non-blacks said how good that person's hair looked. What that showed me was people don't really care about CA. They simply cared about trying to make Ateez disband due to it. Some of the same people who claimed they were fans of ATEEZ and who were also Army, literally dragged Ateez and said people shouldn't stan them. I stanned BTS for over 5 years and recall many instances of BTS C/A and even worse the colorism so again, it showed that holding idols accountable and dragging idols only applied to certain groups. Personally I don't care about other races with braids However, in kpop I know it's just meant to imitate so I don't support it. There are literally other races in the US who wear braids and plaits because they feel it is a part of them. Certainly not talking about people like the Kardashians. Still, there is no reason why you need to throw on big ass gold chains, braids, grills to do hip hop music. I am a big hip hop fan but you wouldn't be able to tell that because black music should not have stereotypes. As for Korean labels, they need to stop using other cultures aesthetics and focus on their own. ATEEZ has done hip hop very well without trying to promote the stereotype so there was no need to go that route in Thanxx. If you love hip hop, do hip hop but stop trying to look the part, speak the part of something you are not.

I'm a black atiny. I have twitter but not a "stan account." I just favorite and retweet whatever I want from my personal account, so I don't always see the ins and outs of the conversations but my friend sent me a tweet about the situation after I mentioned the CA in the promo pics to them and I went down the atiny twt rabbit hole and honestly, if I ever wanted a stan account, I'd be VERY wary of being mutuals with non-black atinys simply due to the way so many of them were interacting with other atinys. I am a grown woman with depression, anxiety, and PTSD that I even take medication for. I don't want to be arguing about the validity of my pain on Twitter. Especially not when my favorite ATEEZ songs are the ones that help ease my anxiety like Aurora and Sunrise. There's enough going on in my black ass life in the same year I was denied a job because I looked "unruly and unkept" with my perfectly done and moisturized braids, which I painstakingly did in order to appeal more to my prospective employer instead of wearing my curls out. Hahaha. HAHAHAHA. Love unemployment in a pandemic and then being told "its just hair" for me. 😊😊😊😊 To know that KQ/before KQ was KQ already had a history of culturally appropriating and the hairstylist herself had been dragged before for styling non-black asians with styles like cornrows and locs... yikes. That says something about how black people's pain is always low on the list of considerations when making decisions. It's true in music in and outside of kpop, true in the business world, and true in the social world. I'm disappointed (but not surprised) in many atinys whose tweets I used to find humorous or relatable and proud of the black atinys who helped KQ become ... aware (cuz it seems like they already KNEW)... and I'm glad that Hongjoong mentioned it himself in interviews and said that they will be more comprehensive in choosing their concepts in the future and that it will not happen again. That's the base of accountability and think that after all this, he knows us fans will blow up their email and social media accounts again and (some of us) will refuse to watch or stream whatever the content is. As we should. Anyways, thanks for the video! Have a good day and stay safe, doll 💋

I went to their individual pages and most of them had photos in cornrows, braids, etc. The dance team also does backup for Zico (no surprise there 💀). A few of the girls were the backup dancers for jessi’s recent video for nunu nana- cornrows, baby hairs, and all. Cultural appropriation is literally their thing. No dreads, no rows, no black face and no confederate flags. How would Koreans feel about having the Japanese rising sun flag on stage with an American band playing? You know, cuz they didn't know. Black Atiny here. When I first saw the picture I knew the storm was coming. I didn't feel one way or another. I understand what people are fighting for. I knew it was inevitable. I appreciate their voices. It would at least be a foot note in history. Things that are important get forgotten. It's commercialized and distorted. I saw a tweet recently that praised the black Atiny who weren't upset. I wanted to comment. I didn't! I'm not silent because I am agreeing with you. I would like to fight until the end, just to say that I stood for us. I interesting enough I just couldn't come up with something that would change hearts and minds. I don't want to speak uselessly. All I saw was hubris. To end this I'll say; who are you to speak for someone else? Who are you to decide how someone should feel or react. Emotion is not based on statistics. I hope to never tell someone that their feelings are invalid. I hope to understand. I hope to give space to whatever is there and come to peace. If you're first thought is to fight. I only asks why are you so defensive?Attacking is doing you no good. Maybe you can drown out the opposing voices, but what then? You've defended something vile. Now that is who you are. I'm just saying this because I had to say something.

Every race but black people get to be appreciated and respected for loving kpop and don't get offended even though every single genre of music basically plagiarizes our ideas. Think about it; blues, jazz, r&b, hiphop, edm, and now kpop. I'm not trying to make anyone who is not black feel bad, but we deserve better. Why do ALM supporters not include black people too? When will we be acknowledged for the things we invented? When will black people finally be able to get the full respect and acknowledgment we deserve? We should be able to enjoy any genre without being uncomfortable. At least Hongjoong apologised with sincerity and seriousness unlike other idols who brush it off as a joke. When I play Koop songs aloud some times, my mom literally points out who they sampled it from. They are mostly black singers and rappers from the 90s. I'm not saying that they can't use the music, but I am saying that you should at least acknowledge who created this type of music. I would appreciate that a lot. I'm trying my hardest not to give up kpop.

K-Pop isn’t going to stop being problematic anytime soon. If you choose to continue consuming it, you’ll have to expect the disrespect to come along with it. You’re better off ignoring them than asking for support you’ll never get, as ripping off Black culture is what kpop is built off of. I wouldn’t say every other race gets respected/appreciated by K-Pop as they’re racist to and appropriate other demographics as well, Black fans just get it the most often. I’m begging that this won’t happen again in ateez. Certain things I can forgive but not forget, especially if it was old and before I joined kpop. Which is kind of me making excuses for them I know. But truly if this happens again to any group I watch, I really will unstan without hesitation.
@clelia46603 жыл бұрын
I hate the excuse of "We used it as a concept" "This was used in a musical sense", just quit the bs. Also, it's not that hard for them to do their research, you don't make a full album, an MV, teaser photos, choose the outfits, the hairstyles and everything and release the whole damn thing in 5 minutes. A comeback takes months, they should know better.

antiny became super toxic super fast. i stopped associating with that fandom early on. It's insane though that black people are essentially being bullied out. enjoying music and variety content doesn't mean u have to leave ur brain at the door. It's actually really easy to just listen to the people who are affected by these issues and YET

I agree with the majority of what you said about the situation, also I'm happy KQ didn't repeat the mistake. However, from the point of view of an artist and designer, I completely understand why they didn't change the promo photos or the music video. In similar industries, specially Kpop, those parts of content are prepared months before being posted online, everything looking alike and in the same style. They were continuously posting everything for a month, each date planned and it would be extremly unprofessional for them to suddenly stop it and post a fast edited redisigned photos that don't match the music video. Editing the video itself would be impossible, hair modeling animation is one of the most difficult things to do and I doubt the company would even have the budged to make it look it at least presentable, also there weren't enough time. Can you imagine the video with strange AI hair wavering around Hongjoons head? Again, I'm upset at the situation, but I think the apology and the fact that didn't repeat it it's enough.

Hi, im not a black Atiny, ATEEZ are one of my ults. I started stanning them after all of this happened and Hongjoong is my bias. I found this video just now and I have a question for all Black Atiny, I want to know what is the best way for us, white people (in my case), to help when CA happens in Kpop. I myself do not believe that a mistake should ruin someone`s career and I do not stand up for cancel culture but I genuinely think that when it comes to CA, the way you guys speak up shouldnt be taken as "exaggerating and overreacting" but as genuine concern and to educate the idols you love... Anyways, I would like to know what is the best way to handle and help to solve these and how do we genuinely make idols learn from these mistakes
@modisedaeswatiniprincess69443 жыл бұрын
Any culture and religion deserves to be respected so let's start off by understanding that appropriation isnt appreciation or respect. What you can do is stand by those who got offended, rightfully so. If people say they have an issue with kpop idols using certain things from their culture or religion or saying certain things (like racial or homophobic slurs out of "ignorance") accept it. Do NOT question why tf they're upset, you're likely to not understand because social sciences is very complex but what we can do in order to co-exist is understand that just because you dont get why I'm upset then my feelings are invalid. One thing I've noticed is that most white kpop stans invalidate anything black and brown people have to say. Just shut up if you don't get it or support us. Also throwing racial slurs at people just because they're criticising your faves is not it 🤦🏽♀️ I dont know if that helped but yeah that is all.

@bbpenguins87492 жыл бұрын
it’s upsetting to see non black people wearing cornrows, because of the history behind them. My enslaved ancestors would braid their hair like that for various reasons the main one was to braid map’s of plantations into their hair to plan escapes routes, and to hide grains of rice to eat without getting caught. Another reason is because our hair was and still is seen as ugly, unprofessional, crazy, etc. Because of the time period slaves did not have the resources to “maintain” their hair so they braided it up to keep it out of the way and mostly out of sight. i hope this helps you understand better

No actually, they’ve since mocked Native Americans while also wearing Dreamcatchers and using teepee’s, wore an Afro wig to make fun of Mexicans, the list goes on. I guess I’ll make sure to include this in a future video because atiny keep coming to this video to say they haven’t had problems since when that’s far from the truth, the fandom must be covering all of these scandals meticulously
@LetsBeHonest30 Жыл бұрын
It’s funny how Atiny’s defend Ateez about copyright in dancing and music but turn a blind eye on this. Their dance moves are a copy of black artists and choreographers. I’ve been listening to K-pop for over 16 years and I can’t stand seeing fans continue to be blind to what their favs are doing.

Just wondering why you’ve only made a video on Ateez? They’ve apologised personally 3 times and been one of the only idol groups to do it. Can you make a video on other groups like Stray kids? They’ve had a lot of ca with black culture, Indian culture, a member of theirs just had an antiblack and anti sea, fatphobic and ableist rap surface too and they’ve worn durags

@@AdeolaAsh never said they were the ‘only group’ I only said they were one of the only, which is still true, the leader actually apologising directly to a black fan and apologising on vogue and Forbes and not just giving out a ‘general’ apology is rarely done. I was just wondering why you only made a solo video on ateez when there are much worse groups in 4th gen that have done much more :)
