Hey ya'll, so I say megabytes quite a lot in this video, but I actually mean megabits (which are 1/8th of a megabytes). So each Hyperdeck High recording is up to 70mb/s (megabits), and so you'll want to make sure the write speed of your drive is capable of doing 400 mb/s (or at least 50MB/s aka megabytes). Sorry for any confusion caused... I feel like a right donut for getting me megabits and megabytes mixed :)

@@AlexPettitt - ExFAT is the way to go. I use the same SSD for my BMPCC 4K and my ATEM ISO, so this format allows all - MAC/PC use and Camera/ATEM use.

thanks for you fast reaction video :) The ISO is great but it is a financial rather step up. First I doubted between mini and mini pro. Then between mini-pro and pro-iso. But then the other Black magic video switcher are getting in range. I have to say, Black Magic did a fabulous job with their range of products and pricing. I decided to go for mini pro which I ordered today. I have to say you helped me a lot to decide. I watched a lot of videos about the Atems to come to a conclusion but your videos helped most. I did not chose Atem Mini because I do not own a computer that can easely switch 4 captures in + stream at 1080p using OBS. I would need a much more powerfull computer. I did not chose the ISO becasue it is another big price step up and would also require buying extra SSD drives while all my camera's can record while giving cleam hdmi out. So for me best choice is the Atem mini Pro which I ordered today together with 2 black magic hdmi to sdi and sdi to hdmi converters to get at least one camera much further away. Still doubting about what cable to buy. I want to cross 30 meters. Price difference in cables is huge. Thank you for your work Alex

A reply to my own comment of 3 years ago. I have updated first to an Atem pro ISO and then to an Atem extreme ISO. I would never want one without the iso because being able to record all inputs makes the atem EXTREMELY better to do post productions with :) I LOVE this black magic models. They offer so much for the price.

So if all you're doing is recording footage to the SSD (sort of to get a rough cut of an event/presentation video), do you still need a laptop and the ATEM software? Looking to try this with my churches sermon recordings. We're not live streaming right now, but it would be nice to basically live edit the sermon recording, and fine tune it later before uploading.

Ahhh I should have featured this on the video Tim, but the way I currently do this is to use a USB-C dongle that has multiple USB A ports in, as those SanDisk SSD's come with a converter for USB-C to A. That means I can plug multiple disk into the ATEM ISO at the same time and switch between them. It works great...although must admit with a 1TB drive, I rarely run out of space.

Great video! So my question is can you only record the ISO's through the USB to a drive? The config I've been dealing with clients is they want to run multiple sources to a zoom presentation so I use the USB to connect to a laptop so the ATEM Mini Pro ISO, looks like a webcam to zoom...but because I'm doing that, does it make recording the ISO tracks impossible or can you still get the iso's sent to the laptop somehow? I've been able to record to a standard HDD - a Western Digital 4TB MyBook. The write speed of this (decidedly not-SSD) drive is benchmarked at 90 MB (not Mb/s). This gets even higher for sequential writes (some sites state as high as 140 MB/s), which seems plenty for for this application (70Mb/s * 5 = 43 MB/s). I may not trust this HDD for critical work, and I still keep a trusty SSD for most applications, but you certainly don't need the fastest drive ever to keep up with this recording rate.

Great info about the iso recordings being in the highest quality. But aren't the bitrates listed in bits not bytes? If so almost any external hard drive should be fine.

This fixes my issue of being stuck with 720p recordings, as I primarily stream to Facebook. I would have liked to have a 1080p program recording file (so that I didn't need to edit, render etc), but I'll take what I can get. My situation is livestreaming a church service to Facebook Live, then saving/clipping the recording on Facebook, but I would like to get a better quality recording to upload after the service. Only issue is I don't have 2-3 hours to wait for a render to finish.

Short question. I own a Macbook Pro from 2018. I last connected my DSLR via USB and integrated it into OBS using a software solution. A USB mic is also connected to the Macbook Pro. When streaming, the Macbook Pro box has already reached its limits and the CPU load ensures that you can actually no longer use the computer to work in a program and stream a video tutorial, for example. The ATEM Mini Pro with built-in encoder could solve this problem for me. In any case, I understand it that way, when I connect all the hardware mentioned to the ATEM Mini Pro and also connect my Macbook Pro to the ATEM via HDMI, that I can stream directly from the ATEM Mini Pro and the entire CPU performance would no longer come to fruition yes the ATEM is working. How does it all work when I connect all my hardware to the ATEM Mini Pro and connect it to my Macbook Pro via USB-C and then stream from my Macbook Pro via OBS (source is then ATEM video and audio). Is the CPU utilization of my Macbook Pro even smaller than when I use the first scenario without ATEM? Have you been able to gain experience on this?

Did you mean megabits/second? You said megabytes and graphically displayed megabytes. However the software is in megagBITS. Megabits would be 1/8th the bandwith.

Alex. Love your videos and comments about the ATEM Mini switchers. I'm thinking of upgrading my entire home studio to the ISO version of the ATEM MINI PRO, but also am considering switching my three Sony alpha cameras (combo of a6100 to a6600) to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4Ks. I have on order my first BPCC4 cameras now, wanting to rig it to shoot on location. I LOVE the idea of ISO recording and being able to control all the cameras, have tallys, re-edit in DaVinci, etc, but of course need BPCC4's to really take advantage of all this. Am I crazy to do this? Also, I fear that the BPCC4's don't have continuous autofocus which is something really necessary for one-man streaming studios. HELP with advice. Kirk

The reason for asking is when I record on a drive in ex Fat with existing content on the drive, when I view the drive on the Mac the recordings are often not displayed. I have a Canon 6d that i would like to add to my Atem Mini Pro set-up. Unfortunately the HDMI output needs to be blown 117% to fit the entire screen. We can zoom in by more than 100% on the dvd, that's a workaround, but do you think there be a way to set an individual input to do the same trick with the editing of the xml file? Thanks you. I picked up the SanDisk SSD you suggested for the ATEM ISO. When I plug it into the board the buttons flash, inputs and outputs disconnect, restart. The DSLRs reconnect but the GoPros are ejected and I need to do a hard restart on them. Even when the ssd is plugged in the board doesn't recognize it. I already ran the BMD disk speed test app and it was getting over 400mbps format exFAT.

I didn’t realise that the livestream quality was the same as the SSD recording. From experience ( correct me if I’m wrong) it was better to have a low stream rate on my live streaming from the ATEM but if I’m recording as well then my recording will be lower quality?

Alex, I am wondering if you can test something. I have both a BMPCC 6K and a Ursa Mini Pro G2 and only the 6K can have camera control from the ISO Pro. As I do not yet have my ISO Pro what is your thought on jam syncing timecode on both cameras, manually starting the G2, and remotely starting the 6K. Here's the question. You should get both camera in feeds captured from the HDMI feed, but where does the timecode come from? Does it come in from the cameras...or is it generated from the ISO Pro? And if it comes in from the cameras, do you think that the Resolve file would allow for the replacement of the captured footage with the BRAW footage from the time synced cameras so everything matches up? All inputs and outputs are recorded saved to your external USB SSD drive simultaneously. You get 4 mp4's from your inputs, 1 mp4 from your mixed output and 6 wav's from your audio inputs (2 1/8"-inputs and 4 hdmi), plus any graphics used and the Resolve project file. It is *really* sweet, and has allowed me to re-purpose my old HDV mini-DV cameras into a multi-cam studio setup with each camera's feed recorded as mp4 files :)

I want to deliver my podcasts in 4K and using the DRP file created while using the ATEM could save me tons of time, but the 1080p limit is a deal breaker for me. I've just ordered the Extreme ISO, I have a shoot this Sunday and I only have one worry/concern and that is due to not having any BM cameras, I'm mixing 2 Sony and one Olympus (With LUT applied to match the Sonys via a Ninja V). What is it like to sync the footage from the cameras with the Atem if they are not BM cameras? Do you have to manually sync them? And will the editable file still keep all the cuts in place with the Sony footage?

I have a big problem with the ATEM iso extreme. We use it for our podcast studio, and we record straight through it to a SSD T7 drive. After a year and a half of no problems, it (ATEM iso Extreme) started randomly NOT RECORDING anything to our hard drives. This is horrible for our clients, and I can't seem to get an answer anywhere, as I'm not sure anyone is having this issue. We use the SanDisk 4TB and Samgsung T7 too. They always worked fine.. but now this issue. So we bought a NEW extreme iso ATEM, and it worked great for a month, and it just happened again today for a client. 45 minute podcast recording.. and nothing was there when we plugged it into the computer. Vanished. No trace of it. We can't seem to figure out if it's a cord, HD or the BM device issue?? We don't want to record internally to the cameras (we can as a backup but our business turns projects out very fast so that would never work for our business model long term). If anybody has any insights that would be great. Thanks Murphy

As a first step I recommend download a disk recovery too (IRE Disk Drill) for Mac to see if you can recover the recordings off the drive. I’ve had some clients experience the same failure as you and basically an error occurs when the ATEM closes out the recording. They’re are all there but hidden on the drive. So try that as a first step. But yes, this is a concerning issue! The fix for this particular client was replacing their SSDs and they haven’t had an issue since. Hope this helps!

But now my issue is the a7iv is recording the not only the image, but the camera Huds also, and how to get rid of the black bars on the camera display its recording a black square outline also

Have you tried the second generation yet. I ask because the Samsung T5 also has a flawless reputation with the ISO, but a lot of people are reporting problems with their second generation T7. That said I have not had any problems with either of my T7s but I have a very big 3 day live event coming up and I can’t afford to have issues with my SSD. So, curious what you would do?

Yes if you select Hyperdeck High as the live streaming quality. In the non ISO versions there is only one encoder, so it will always record at whatever the live streaming quality is set to :) Hope this helps

I have the Sandisk Extreme SSD and for some reason my ATEM mini pro ISO won't recognize it. I plug it it and nothing, no light or any response. I plug it into my mac and it works fine. I've tried reformatting in both ExFat and MAC OS Journaled. Any other suggestions? I've tried it with both the 500 GB and 1 TB versions. Would love any help. I can't seem either to work at all. Hi Alex, Thanks for your content on these pieces of Hardware. I wondered if you could answer my questions. I have a Pro Iso, I am using a Ursa Mini Pro G1, and three Panasonic GX80's to record. The Usra is Cam 1. The ISO file size of Cam 1 is around five times smaller than the others ISO Cam's. It's also the front-facing camera with the least amount of movement in it. Would that affect the file size? it seems a very significant difference. Thanks in advance.

Has this changed in a recent update? I just recorded ISOs on a show and the files range from 21Mbps to 38Mbps for the bitrate, which seems quite a bit lower than 70Mbps. This was at 1080p/24 with the streaming set to Streaming High (the Program recorded at 6Mbps).

I THINK that there is a range of 6 settings; not just 3. So, the 3 Hyperdeck settings (70, 45, 20 on his video are all higher than the 3 Streaming Settings -- which start below 20Mb/sec and go down).

Hello, would you know a way to connect to my recording drive (connected to my ATEM mini pro ISO at work) from my home? From what I understand is that the switcher would have it's own FTP server? Can you help? Thanks

Why is it that when I hear the recording live as I use the switcher, the sound is louder than the export of my mics. When I open my file, the sound waves are way lower than what they appear as when I record live. And I am using lavender mics with receivers.

Is there an option to get the Multicam workflow the same you see on your multiview out?// The one that works really great in Premiere and Vegas for quick realtime (on-air style ) style.... It is a questionable moment do we really need it when we have just to change a few exact things in an editing sequence we made before.... but in case we have just recorded all the streams and haven't been really edited in on-air it can be helpful

Hey Alex, thank you so much for this videe. however, i have a challenge with m atem when recording iso files. when i switch it on and i am using an empty sandisk ssd 1tb drive, it says i have only 20mins to record but when i switch iso off and use the hd option, it gives me 700mins. what could be the problem. Thank you.

Can the TV pro 4k atem also export all channels onto a drive?

I'm struggling a bit. My ISO recordings are only producing a maximum of 1080 despite having 4k BMPCC. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?
