On the ISO models, the individual ISO recorded files are at the highest quality at all times, its only the mix that is recorded at the higher compressed streaming quality. So you can stream at a low quality, while still retaining the high quality to edit later.

How do I ensure that my timeline is using the ISO footage rather than the mixed footage so that when I export, I am getting the best quality on my final export? I feel like my export quality is poor before I even considering uploading it to KZbin. I export in H264 and/or H265 with Multi-pass encode Main10 at 90k Kb/s. I have my Quality in the ATEM set to Hyperdeck High but considering I am not streaming, I would expect that the ISO isn't affected by the quality and that I should be able to use these as the export source files?

This is so timely (I just upgraded this week from ATEM Mini Pro to ISO) for my KZbin recording. The Color Correction portion opened my eyes. Here is a great idea (at least for high-end Panasonics) Capture a segment in VLOG and then use your color grading tool of choice (Davinci Resolve for me) and make an in-camera viewing LUT. Apply that to your camera and now you get the flexibility and enhancement of color correction without the needed pixels as you demonstrated. Great for a studio environment where the lighting does not change from shoot to shoot. And the bonus is no work needed to color correct after ATEM recording!
@PowerUpTraining2 жыл бұрын
Just an update. I did do some testing: 1) switched Lumix G series cameras to VLOG and recorded to the memory card. 2) Color graded the file in Davinci Resolve and 3) Exported the video screen color grade to a Lumix VLT file and uploaded to the camera, 4) turned on SCREEN LUT to HDMI on the camera and now, when running the ATEM ISO, I am getting already perfectly color graded files saved. These extra steps have just increased my productivity even more . . . my ATEM three-camera setup is instantly color graded and easy to create a multi-cam videos. BONUS, I liked this so much, I created a 2nd LUT VLT file that is color graded for my business ZOOM Meetings and so now I have more professional-looking meetings with my ATEM. All of this based on Aaron's excellent video and pointing out the downside of color correcting from the ATEM recorded files after being recorded. THANKS AARON . . your videos are excellent as always.

@@PowerUpTraining Hey, fortunately i just found your two comments, because i am searching for exactly this topic! I want to buy an atem iso but was wondering: what color-profile the hdmi signal has to be?! nobody talks about the hdmi-out settings of the cameras! My first thought was: set vlog to hdmi camera output and get it recorded by the atem to colorgrade it later in davinci OR set an already graded lut onto the screen hdmi! (as you luckily described it) I would like to ask you: when you set your graded lut to the hdmi camera out, is the videoimage already sharpen and noise-reduced (because you graded that within your lut) or does the atem does sharpening and noise-reduction by itself when processing and recording? And my second question: the atem says it uses the rec709 color profile. How does this affect your recording quality? When i would send vlog to the hdmi-out of the camera, would the atem apply that rec709 color profile to the video recordings? I would be soo happy when you might take a minute to help me out!!! i would appreciate it a lot! Big thanks in advance, cheers

@@stephan-by8lt first off, I am an amateur and have learned from the school of hard knocks and KZbin. It has taken over 24 months to get to a spot where I am pleased. My setup was complicated as I now have three identical Panasonic Lumix box cameras that I splice my youtube talking head videos, and getting them to perfectly match was challenging even with the same cameras and lights (getting less than 1/3 stop for lighting was my last challenge to solve.) In the end, I am pleased with the cameras, lights, and ATEM Mine Pro ISO. I take the recorded image and make no more color correction out of the camera. Both a time saver and a long-term solution for consistent results. What that meant was to get a solid VLOG out of one Lumix on a memory card (do start with full 4k files); then do ALL my color correction in Davinci Resolve, then export out to a Panasonic LUT file. EVERYTHING color and sharpness is done in Davinci (and the cameras have all similar settings for white balance and the same VLOG recording settings). Once I import the LUTs into the Panasonics via a memory card, I am then able to tell the camera to send the graded look out (a separate Lumix camera setting) through the HDMI, which then goes to the ATEM. The ATEM does not mess with the video coloring. And what I end up with a perfectly graded or, probably more accurately consistently graded results. No color correction is needed (and if you had to correct these ATEM 1080 files, they would not look good as Aaron explains). GET IT RIGHT in Davinci at the start. (Note that the camera is still in VLOG recording mode, it is just outputting through HDMI with the graded LUT.) One benefit is no longer shuffling memory cards in and out of the camera. Just work with the results out of the ATEM Mini Pro ISO Hope this makes sense. If you want to be horrified, look at the videos on my channel in the early days and then the last two or three where I believe I have worked out the kinks. The last set has NO color correction done after coming out of the ATEM Mini ISO. It has made my workflow so much less stressful!!! Here is an example (topic is GPT and Presentations) with the three Lumix BGH1 cameras using my graded LUTs to ATEM Mini ISO: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZe2nImIobCietE Good luck.

Another advantage of the Atem ISO route is when you use BlackMagic cameras it is supereasy to replace the recordings with 4k BM Raw. They are auto synced. Camera recording is triggered through the Atem. And you just copy the raw files in the iso folder, open Resolve, en click one button in Resolve to tell it to use the raw files.

Thanks for the video. I had had thoughts on the subject of which best, Quality or Convenience. You made me feel better about my ultimate decision. After I finally purchased an ATEM Extreme ISO SDI, I built a flypack around it that incorporated both an SSD USB drive for the ATEM Mini, and a Hyperdeck mini for program out recording. For events the Hyperdeck is my preferred main recorder, with the ATEM SSD being backup program and of course ISO recording. If I need to send in something quickly for a client, I'll use the ATEM recording because of the file size. If I have to do any serious editing and processing, then it is the Hyperdeck recording I work with.

It's a bit like raw vs JPEG in the photography world. If the lighting and colors are good when shooting, there is little benefit, but when trying to really push a poorly lit or going for a cinematic grade in post then prores is your friend. In a studio, there is no excuse for bad light, which is a main use case. Venues on the other hand can be difficult to get good lighting and having more data is better, so consider recording in camera if it supports a better compression, and an external recorder, or work with venue lighting

Just make sure you thoroughly test whatever SSD drive you record onto on the ISO models. I just had a situation where I had to record ISO for hours at a time and the recording stopped every half hour. This was on my "trusty" Samsung T5. I then bought a San Disk Extreme, which stops recording at 10 minutes and also sends the ATEM crazy. I have done tests and talked to BM, who say my ATEM is fine and that drives can be unreliable, even if on their list of approved drives. I've had to buy a Wise drive (the ones BM use) which are more expensive, but I am hoping this will work....we shall see.

Am I the only one who still cannot handle (it totally distracts me from the content being said) that the talent is looking into the camera from one angle and then not from another angle? For me the talent has to watch into the camera from all angles(camera's) or never look into the camera which makes the viewer believe the talent is talking to a third person in the room. Maybe I am just too old to get used to this new and "strange" way of camera usage. Opinions please. Thank you for this video Aaron. The information is very useful and gave me new insights.

Thanks Aaron. Furthermore I don't understand why I should use this method at all if I only record the Video-Out. I don't speek of recording all the different camera-angles at the inputs of the ATEMs. I regularly use the small ATEM Mini and connect it to my laptop via Thunderbolt and record there with very acceptable reuslts. HDMI delivers 18 MBit/s, recording with 100 MBit/s is therefore no problem. Since I additionally record in the cameras I have the posssibility of editing later on. I don't need to copy all the SD-Cards to the editing system. Just the ones I need. The Qualitity of the recordings in the cameras fit to that in the laptop. So why should I invest into the Pro-Atems if I already have the functionality in my setup? And if I need more than 4 camera-Input: 2 of the small Atems also give 7 inputs and cost less than an Atem Extreme.

If you combine the ISO recording feature in the Atem Mini (Extreme) ISO you can also choose to record natively in camera in BRAW quality and then use the resulting Davinci Resolve project to edit with the h264 files, which then act as a form of proxy files. By the time you hit the Color page, you can replace those "proxies" with the original BRAW files from the cameras and grade with impunity.
@richardvandenboogaard8836 Жыл бұрын
Using this method, you can only record in BRAW in camera. BMD will not allow you to choose ProRes (even though the cameras support that as a codec).

When recording ISO's and the program feed does your program recording have any digital block dancing artifacts on the left edge of frame? I'm using the Mini Pro SDI ISO model and when I record at 29.97 Hyperdeck high or medium I get dancing digital blocks along the whole left edge. Strange thing is the ISO records are perfectly clean. Blackmagic support told me my 2TB Samsung T5 SSD wasn't fast enough so I bought a 1TB SanDisk Extreme Pro 2000MB/s drive and it does the same thing. Blackmagic wants me to just record my program feed at the 6-9mbps streaming setting. If that's the only solution. That's a HUGE miss on Blackmagic's part. Who wants high res iso recordings with a defective program recording. That you MUST re-export out of resolve if you want a full res program record.

@aaronpk Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The ISO files are always recorded at 70mbit/s, and there's no option to change that. It's definitely a bit large, but it means you get good quality files to edit down later. The program file that's recorded is recorded at the same bitrate as your streaming setting, so if you're streaming at 6mbit/s, the program file will be a lot smaller than the ISOs. If you want to shrink the ISO files down in order to send them around for editing, you can use the (free) Blackmagic Proxy Generator App that comes with Resolve and you can convert them to h265 files which compress down a lot more.

So on the Atem Mini Pro there is only one HDMI output, you can decide whether you want it to be multiview or program out. So if you're recording from that into a Video Assist then you have no way to see the multiview. That's different on the ATEM Mini Extreme because there are two HDMI outputs so you can use one for multiview and one for program.

I've searched and searched and still haven't found the answer to the question. How do I record to an external hard drive and still use the software controller at the same time? It seems you can only do one or the other. If I connect my mac to the ATEM I have to use the usbc, if I want to record to an external hard drive I have to use the usbc. Am I missing something? Make a video on that please.

Connect the ATEM to your wired network with the Ethernet jack to keep the USB port free for the hard drive!

Aaron, when you are recording your ISO's what preset do you normally use?
@aaronpk2 жыл бұрын
The streaming setting only affects the "program" recording, and most of the time I don't use that, I only use the ISO files. The ISO files are always recorded at true highest bitrate, you don't get a choice of that. So really the only time I check what my streaming setting is at is if I'm trying to record the SuperSource, since that isn't recorded as its own ISO file

how to make sure the program output is the highest quality?
@aaronpk Жыл бұрын
If you choose "Hyperdeck High" in the ATEM settings that will record at the maximum supported quality in the ATEM. You can get higher quality recordings from an actual Hyperdeck recorder though since that can record ProRes instead of the compressed h264 that you get in the ATEM.

Can you record all individual ISO model camera inputs onto the hdmi external drive?

If you want to record all the inputs, you have to plug in a SSD to the USB port. The HDMI output to an external HDMI recorder can record only one signal

HI - When we do the record, how to access the software while the USB-c port is busy? If it is not possible, how can I see in some videos that it switches between SSDs?
@aaronpk Жыл бұрын
You can also access the software control over the network, make sure your computer and ATEM are on the same network and it should pop up in the software control app.

@@aaronpk Thanks for your reply / but there is concern that the network is not stable and I was hoping to find a better way
@aaronpk Жыл бұрын
You should bring your own network switch for your local equipment, that way you can ensure it's stable. Don't connect all your devices directly to a venue's network, because you'll always run into problems that way.

Do you Davinci Resolve to edit the individual camera views or can I use something like final cut?
@aaronpk2 жыл бұрын
You can definitely use whatever. The ISO model creates a Resolve project on the drive, but I ignore that and just import the video files into Resolve from scratch, it'd work the same in Final Cut too

425 / 5.000 I'm from Germany and I have a question. Can you get a true 4K signal with Blackmagic Design Video Assist on the ATEM mini Extreme ISO program out? That would be really great to always record a track separately in much better quality. You can decide spontaneously during live editing which camera should go into the program out. Thanks very much. By the way: Very good article. Like and subscription are set.

Unfortunately the ATEM Mini doesn't support 4K at all. Hopefully we will see some 4K models soon!

When you use the external recorder do you still get the individual iso files or just the final file?

The ISO files are only when recording to the SSD. Using an external recorder will only record the one video feed you send to the recorder

Do Record limits still exist with mirrorless cameras with the ATEM mini?
@aaronpk Жыл бұрын
The record limits have nothing to do with the ATEM. Some cameras are limited to recording internally under 30 minutes to keep them in a different export tax category. Even when there's this limit, the HDMI output will be continuous so you can use it with the ATEM. That said, there are plenty of options for cameras without this limit now, I can't even think of a recent mirrorless camera that has this limit anymore.
@treyl21 Жыл бұрын
@@aaronpk thank you, I guess a better way to ask is to explain what i want to do. I want to record a podcast with the atem mini and a mirrorless camera that has a 30 minute record limit. Will the camera shut off after 30 or will the atem give us a longer record time without stoppage

Q how can I record audio only out of my ATEM mini extreme, into my hard drive

There's no option to record only the audio, but if you have the ISO model, recording will give you all the video files as well as a separate wav file for each camera and microphone

I saw another YT video showing how you can replace the 1080p HD timeline/edit recorded from the ATEM Mini Pro ISO for ex. within your DAW's video editor. In Divinci Resolve you can open the Project file created by the ATEM Mini Pro ISO and choose replace with B Raw or I am guessing 4K better video and it will swap better res files in the same timeline. Pretty cool way to upgrade the footage to higher res in a step. Would work in Final Cut and Premier too with a few more prep steps.

I cannot recommend this product, the ATEM mini series. The HDMI output has a history of failing. I bought a unit a year ago and the HDMI output had gone bad after a dozen or so uses. Then recently I bought another one. This brand new unit out of the box had the same problem after a single day - I sent it back to B&H this morning. Next, I was getting some equipment at a broadcast rental house in Tempe Arizona and my sales contact had an ATEM Mini on his desk with the same problem. To top it off, my video engineer had an ATEM Mini that was flickering on the HDMI yesterday - he told me these ATEM Minis are prone to this problem. I'm moving to another manufacturer, probably Roland. Not worth the risk using ATEM products. They will go down for sure.
@aaronpk2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that! I've been using several ATEM Minis for about two years straight and haven't had any trouble like that! I have noticed that certain cameras or monitors sometimes don't work with the ATEM, but I haven't had any just fail after they were previously working.
@treffensaintjohnllc29132 жыл бұрын
@@aaronpk My video engineer conjectures Black Magic/Atem bought a batch of bad HDMI connectors. I do not take his hypothesis very seriously. I was sadden by this misfortune because the concept of the switcher is exactly what I was looking for and I believed it would be a good match for the types of events I do; however, it's too risky putting them on live events. These ATEM Minis will take down an entire live event. There's a market for these kinds of switchers to be sure. And everything else about the ATEM Mini is solid. I like the feel of the push buttons and the case itself is quite solid. Yet, I can no longer trust them on my events.

@@aaronpk thank you. But I guess I did not find the specific answer. As the ATEM Mini Pro has only one USB-C Output, I can use only one option as Webcam or Recording. On HDMI Out I am using my MV monitor. So, is there a solution for using the USB-C as Webcam and Recording at the same time?
