I know exactly what the six diodes are for. It is set up for constant and directional lighting. The bulbs are usually 1.5-volt bulbs which is the properties of the voltage drop of a silicon diode (0.6 to 0.7 volts) in series (2 diodes) to create a voltage difference to work along with the third diode for direction. These six diodes are wired anti parallel (3 one way and 3 the other way) to create the circuit. I hope my explanation was clear since I don't have a diagram to illustrate this. Also, the downside of the circuit is that it creates a 1.8 to 2.1 voltage drop to the motor which makes the locomotive run slower. The was something that I want to mention about the TR4. The calf locomotive did not have steps on the cab end of the locomotive which was blanked over. This wasn't a problem since it was permanently couple to the cow locomotive which had steps in this area, but it would be a problem if regular couplers were used. This would be a problem if the unit was separated and ever turned around. A shop could add steps to the end of the calf locomotive, but there may be a couple other issues. The calf locomotive may not be equipped with hostler controls which would hamper its movement in the engine terminal by a hostler. This wasn't an issue when it was permanently couple to the cow locomotive. Another issue would be the permanently wired cables between the units. This would be needed to be changed to a conventional MU set up by the shop personnel. So, I don't ever imagine these locomotives were ever separated unlike the EMD FTs which had a similar setup in later years of their life. I will say that Athearn did have a great idea on creating the cow/calf set even though it wasn't an exact match for a TR4 setup. One could do some modifications if an exact model of this setup was desired. Bonus fact for the Athearn SW7: The Athearn Baldwin S12 uses the same frame as the Athearn SW7. Show the shells can be swapped if a person has the one model but wants the other one instead.
@classicmodeltrainsАй бұрын
Thanks for all that good info. I knew the 6 diodes wired up the way they were , were for directional lighting I just didnt know how to do that from scratch or it dropped the voltage to the motor input. I wondered if that was fact-tree or home-brew?

What you have for the lights is a six diode constant brightness directional light circuit. Four of the diodes form a "Bridge Rectifier" the fifth and sixth diode will drop about a volt and a half through them, causing the light bulb to light. When EMD announced the SW-1500, Athearn used the pre production plans for the new model. When the first SW-1500's finally were produced, the body styling had changed. By the way, the battery's are located under the cab entrance. You lift up a hatch to service the batteries. My first Athearn locomotive was a 1967 vintage "SW-1500" lettered for Burlington. It still runs too!

Super. Good video. My carpet magically transports truck, motor, and coupler springs to another dimension when I drop them. 🙂 My railroad still operates five Athearn EMD SW-7 bluebox locomotives, all bought new by me, almost fifty years ago. The three cow (cab) and two calf (cabless) switchers have operated flawlessly, both inside and outside in the rain and snow, since I acquired them, and have a nice patina on the paint job now that makes them look very realistic. The three cow units came with flywheels, and the two calf units came without flywheels, but were a dollar cheaper for each unit. ($12.95 vs. $13.95) I added factory produced radial X2-f hornhook couplers (I bet very few people have seen those.) to a cow/calf set so they could be used on my trolley line. With very minor filing and fussing, the two switchers will now easily glide around the 4 and 3/4 inch radius curved paved trolley street track (Old Eldon track) and will pull twenty five loaded Mantua/Tyco 34' self unloading hoppers cars and a caboose around the curves and down the rails to the sugar beet mill. (Live loads = brown oval plastic beads = sugar beets.) So far, 21 Athearn bluebox, (And one Athearn band drive) 6 Atlas, 3 Bachmann, 3 Rivarossi, 2 Lifelike, 2 AHM, and 2 Varney old school diesel locomotives (No brass on my pike.) have shown that they have what it takes, and have had or will celebrate their 50th birthday on my layout. Also, 19 Mantua/Tyco locos, out of 26 I bought new, are still operating (7 steam locos, 11 diesel/trolley MU-2 drives, and for Tyco fans, one Powertorque drive Baldwin RF-16 Sharknose survives, ((Out of eight Powertorque drive diesel locos bought new)) and is still operational, while the rest of the Powertorque drives died and were turned into dummies.) I also had the shorting problem with metal Kadee couplers, so the Athearn bluebox, Mantua/Tyco, Bachmann, and Varney locomotives are equipped with plastic Kadee couplers. Hello again from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.
@tracynation2820Ай бұрын
P.S. I have never bought any unpowered dummies, except for one Athearn F-7 B unit, but 16 bought new motorized locos died while in service. (Some dropped, some on fire, some in wrecks, some overworked, some under lubricated, one destroyed by falling off a cliff, and one accidentally crushed.) With almost every brand of plastic locomotive represented, they were converted to diode directional lighted dummies, and still operate on my layout to this day. 💙 T.E.N.

Hey Ron, that's a really nice model. Great servicing video. I could really feel your pain and frustration. It's as if I was there with you. Acknowledging and taking the time to identify the model was entertaining. You have a unique style of portraying things that keep it interesting. I'm an O-gauger, so forgive my ignorance, but couldn't the wheels and axels be flipped in the trucks to prevent the frames from shorting out. Perhaps you have the wheelsets reversed. I double head locomotives all the time without any consideration given to matching exact run characteristics. I know my dual motored engines don't run at consistent speeds together throughout the variable settings of the transformer. However, I avoid double heading can motor and open framed ac motored engines together. The Fireman carries the matches now, for lighting the cigars at the end of the day😊.
@classicmodeltrainsАй бұрын
The trucks would have to be swapped front to back and I think the motor might have to be spun 180 for the pickups and magnets to get the motor to spin the right direction. Them big O gauge motors are probably more forgiving while double heading than these little HO ones I believe. Like your answer for what the fireman does ;-)
@regisbraga383317 күн бұрын
if you just reverse the trucks on an Athearn, you’re gonna have the cow rinding in one direction and the calf rinding in the other one… your solution was elegant and very functional Ron: congrats!
