I'm an addon developer and this isn't anything special, honestly. The front end is just a copy of the auction house interface XML. The backend uses an, private, chat channel and is probably password protected but any competent person could mess with the data being sent. It looks impressive but that's about it.

I have followed WoW since the early days, I remember the Athene videos that absolutely revolutionized gaming content in general. I also remember the accusations, drama, and admittedly sometimes Athene taking things too far. However, I do believe that people deserve redemption of that's what they seek whether that's a true redemption or a reputational one - I think this should have ended when you offered to sign all permissions away. They could have the code independently reviewed for not that much money/ time at all and then he absolutely positive it's a safe addon, and then play with you if they choose and determine your character for themselves. Most of these streamers are too young to even remember you (no offense it's just been a bit since you were THE WoW guy)

Basically he quit WoW to set up a cult around a religion called Athenism and got people to all move to a house with him. A streamer house of sorts. When he says "the guys we have here put together the addon," people would assume that he is talking about his cult members. Look up "Athene's Theory Of Everything" for more information. If I recall correctly it is based on a lot of hermetic principals. The Law of Attraction type stuff. It was extremely random and came out of nowhere so people are still pretty put off by it to this day. The randomness of him doing that in and of itself is offputting. Dude went from playing WoW to creating a whole religion over night with zero foreshadowing lol.. Due to having a vetting and selection process, people likened it to Scientology. Not sure if money was the goal. Kinda think he does believe a lot of what he preached in that video. Afaik, Athene hasn't genuinely scammed anyone in the traditional sense. So the response from OnlyFangs is a little dramatic.

Also, the addon is just Lua in the end. It's a script, it's open source (you can obfuscate, but not close source Lua). I understand where Soda and the people feeling uncomfortable are coming from but I also understand Athene. Very unlucky to see, this mightve helped smaller content creators make their own content reacting to deaths or vice versa , giving them exposure by the bigger streamers reacting to the deaths more frequently as its right there instead of being cherry picked by the community. Hated your past , Athene , wouldve loved a propper positive comeback. Godspeed
