Before it came to Floisvos the ship was on the island of Poros which was for many years an important post for the greek Navy. It was de-comissioned in 1947. The reason the people in the ship were in sailor uniforms is because they *are* sailors, doing thir compulsory military servce in the greek Navy. In fact, the whole ship is maintained mostly by sailors, i.e. non-professionals. It's a good deal for them, because its much better to serve in Averoff than in an active ship or in a remote area 1000 kms from Athens. Btw you should have shown the captain's quarters and the dinner/meeting room. The opulence and the attention to detail are fantastic.

The reason why enlisted sailors serve on this ship is because Averof is regarded that remains in duty and it's the honorable flagship of the Greek Navy, it carries the *Admiral's rank flag* and Navy ships entering the port must honor the battleship. Also know that the battleship is maintained everyday and because of its importance and at the same time being a museum visited everyday by hundreds of people, serving on this ship is not that easy at all. They might not sail the open sea, but keeping such a ship clean as new needs alot of effort. The sailors clean this ship, not some cleaing service. Unfortunately you chose to present a cynical side of serving on the Averof.

G. Averof is still the flagship of the Greek Navy and they hold meetings and official receptions on the ship (very frustrating if one goes to visit the ship and it's closed because of a reception or some other official ceremony). The people working on the ship are actual Greek Navy sailors doing their service time and the officers in charge are Navy active duty career officers, they are not museum employees. Although the Greeks have always called Averof a Battleship it is actually a Pisa class Armored Cruiser and is the only one of this type in the world. There is another museum ship in the port of Piraeus, one of three remaining WW2 Liberty cargo ships in the world. The ship was rebuilt by Greek ship owners, in order to honor these ships that helped the Allies win the war and helped Greek shipping restart operations after the war. The US gave for free a number of Liberty ships to the Greek ship owners and also sold more ships at a low price, as a compensation to them, since about 70% of the Greek ocean going merchant marine fleet and 90% of the coastal fleet was sunk during the war, supporting the Allies, even before Greece entered WW2. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKqrY2eLbs6fq8U

Averof is quite a historic armored cruiser actually not a battleship as the Greeks baptized it one of the last of its kind. I believe there is also one more in the US of that era. Admiral Georgios Kountouriotis chief of Greek navy managed to make all by the ship itself to make the Turkish Armada run twice not once to be saved by its lethal fire barrages of its 190mm cannons in the naval battles of Elli and Lemnos. Kountouriotis freed island of Lemnos first and based the ship there as it was very close to Dardanellia straits where the Turkish armada was stationed inside near konstantinopole. From Lemnos he challenged the Ottoman Admiral in a naval battle via telegraph to bring his armada out and also said that if his ships (Turkish Armada) was in lack of coal then he could sent them as much as they wanted !!!! The ship received modernization around 1937-1939 and managed to stop attacks with its anti-aircraft guns for both Elefsis airport now 112 AFB and the Naval base of Salamis from the German Stoukas that tried to bomb those targets during the German advance towards Athens. Later in the WWII it took the part of an escort of convoys of merchant ships between India to other countries in the region and upon its return received the title of Sword of Meditterean for its service. And brought back from Egypt the last goverment. In its 45 year career the ship managed to have only one dead sailor and one injured!!! world record for its service which earned it the nick name Lucky Uncle George while the Turks named it Saitan papor (Devil's SHIP😂😂😂) The ship is consisted of French boilers Italian Engines German electric generators and English cannons ( one of which was deemed of the Italians as problematic)

It was the most powerful and fast (both were important) in the region. It was among turks' choices to be bought.. but they passed it hoping they would find something better. They had higher budget than the Greeks for buying warships. They also had some serious units under construction in GB but because of the war being close the Brits decided to keep them for their own Navy... Lucky Greeks.

Hello! Some basic informations about this ship, not mentioned in the comments below: 1. It was not bought from the Italian Navy; the Greek Navy bought brand new from Italy, 2. It has some characteristics that made it unique and leathal: the hull and armor are Italian which was a state of the art for the era (thinner, lighter and stronger than any of its competitors), the boilers and engines are French, the generators are German, the armament is British and probably the best of its era, with its main canons having longer range compared to any ship of the Ottomans. 3. In all its service it participated in five wars with just two crew members dead. 4. During the Balkan Wars this ship faced close to the entire Navy of the Ottoman Empire (surely all the ships that could stand against it) in several battles, most enemy ships being either of the same age or newer to Averof, and won every battle. Note that the Ottoman Empire had a huge Navy. 5. This ship was bought by the Greek Navy by sheer luck. The Ottomans were the first in line to buy it, but during this period they went out of money (they probably didnt care much too with all these ships they had), Georgios Averof donated close to half of the money needed and the Greek Navy finally bought it. None expected what would follow... Now, this ship is an armored cruiser, but when it returned from a successful battle against the Ottoman fleet, they called it "battleship". Just to get an idea, a battleship is much bigger in everyaspect compared to a cruiser and can be up to twice+ the size of Averof (the Japanese battleship Yamato was 263m long) in almost every aspect, armament, thickness of armor, etc, except of speed. You really cant mess with a battleship and as it was proved the Ottoman fleet couldnt mess with Averof, hence "battleship". Of course this ship didnt manage all these on its own. The captain, the officers and the crew are responsible for this trully epic history this ship carries. Regards and thank you both for making this video!

The One Day Cruise (highly recommended) starts at Flisvos Marina. It doesn't start at Piraeus so we had to take the shuttle bus to get on the cruise ship.
