Funny thing, there was going to be a REAL Atlantis 2 called "Atlantis: The Shards of Chaos". It was canceled due to the first film's poor box office performance. Milo's Return was going to be a TV Show called "Team Atlantis" where the group would travel the world battling Myths and Cryptids such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the Terracotta Army..... AND a Crossover with Gargoyles!?..... Whoa!

The tv series was going to be called "Team Atlantis", but it was cancelled because of the first film's low box office. "Milo's Return" is in fact the result of forcing together three of the episodes they had already done most of the work on. Interestingly the series was planned to have a Gargoyles crossover.

That's crazy, but given this show had a fucking Lovecraft episode as the first story that combined Innsmouth with Cthulu being responsible for destroying Atlantis, that makes so much fucking sense! It could have been so cool to see them dealing with something so purely magical and figuring out how it all ties together. Man, I wish this show had taken off! There's just so much potential!

OP's talking about 3-episode "movies" made from the table scraps of abandoned shows. The Aladdin movies were intended as feature length from the beginning: their connection to the (un)abandoned show was that they basically functioned as pilot and finale.

The weird thing is that I actually really wish this did make it as a TV show. The stories aren't AMAZING or anything, but the idea of just going through all these different mythologies from Lovecraft's mythos to meso-american spirit wolves to Norse myths and seeing how it all connects together with this Atlantian world and their technology and how all these ancient cultures have effected eachother and Atlantis is honestly super interesting! Again, it's not anything mind blowing, but considering this was probably going to be a Disney cartoon, there's so much potential there to work with and make something really cool out of. What if other literary works were also actually a part of history or what the heck was up with the Egyptians or the Myans or the mythologies of India or China or Japan and how do they tie into everything and what parts of their stories are becoming relevant? It's not an amazingly new concept, but this could have been something really cool and great if given the chance but, instead, it's just sort-of stuck as a failed makeshift movie.
@TackyRackyComixNEO
@TackyRackyComixNEO 7 жыл бұрын
dracocrusher Personally, I don't necessarily care so much about the mythos, I just think it would've been fun to see more interactions between the characters, since the cast was pretty aces.

From what I gathered, they couldn't make it in time for the release. Seems Greg, creator of Gargoyles, pitched the idea to late and couldn't make it. At least that what I get from the notes. To bad since they even got Demona's original VA to reprise the role.

Yeah I remember watching this and the first 'episode' got me really hyped that we'd be seeing something Lovecraftian...only for it to end... At least with Conan he sort of exists in the same universe as the Cthulu Mythos (seriously the two authors were friends and there are subtle references to each others work in their books) so it makes sense for him to be dealing with 'Elder Things'.
@MagusMarquillin
@MagusMarquillin 7 жыл бұрын
luketfer Yeah, it's appropriate for Conan. But, does it make since for Conan to be made as a kids show? I suppose I haven't watched enough of it to say. Adventure time or Gravity Falls get into that disturbing area a fair bit, not that they aren't great shows and not that kids can't usually handle dark themes - It's just kind of funny standards: no boobies, no blood (if it's red) or on screen death, but hinting at a cosmological/existential horror? That's popular, have at it!
@luketfer
@luketfer 7 жыл бұрын
Magus Marquillin The 80s and early 90s seemed obsessed with turning films aimed at adults into kids properties. You had the Aliens toyline (and cancelled cartoon show), the Robocop and Toxic Avengers cartoon series...both from products most definitely not aimed at kids (especially Toxic Avenger). I think thats why we see kids shows use Cosmic Horror because you can still scare the crap out of people without relying on blood.

There was even going to be an Atlantis/Gargoyles Crossover where they run into Demona in Paris! The worst part of this? It was sooooo close to being finished when it got cut off, like the majority of the episodes were already voice acted, including the gargoyle crossover one and they actually got Marina Sirtiss to replay her role as Demona! Atlantis: The Lost Empire was also meant to provide a springboard for an animated television series entitled Team Atlantis, which would have presented the further adventures of its characters. The series would feature episodes with different legends incorporated, such as Puck, The Loch Ness Monster and the Terracotta Warriors. One of the episodes of Team Atlantis that was never animated entitled "The Last" featured an appearance by Demona from Greg Wiseman's previous Disney series Gargoyles and served as a pseudo-crossover between them. However, because of the film's under-performance at the box office the series was not produced either. On May 20, 2003, Disney ended up releasing a direct-to-video sequel film called Atlantis: Milo's Return, consisting of three episodes planned for the aborted series, with some additional animation done to link the stories more closely.

Doug's reaction to this is exactly what I expected, but it doesn't matter this is the one Disney sequel I can never hate. Even if it is nostalgia blindness, you know what who cares. I literally watched this yesterday to see if it still held up for me more than ten years later, and man were there so many things I remembered, smiling through it all. Definitely the biggest flaw I was bothered with was the pacing, (not to mention ever time Milo speaks I can only hear Johnny Test) but it was such a fun three adventures with every character playing a part. In a way it was very similar to an old show I watched "Martin Mystery" which has also held up for me. I don't know corny dialogue has never deterred me, because as long as you have interesting characters and engaging stories no matter how random and strewn together that's was enough to keep me hooked.

silverbrumbyfan: That's dumb. 1) A review is supposed to be informed. A review should ideally not spread missinformation. 5) He had looked into production details on some of the other films, so if he was following your logic (which I doubt) he whould be a hypocrite.

I love Atlantis: The Lost Empire and really wish that it did better with critics and at the box-office. If it had succeeded I would have really liked to see a tv show based on it since they did such a great job creating a unique world filled with great characters. Seeing these characters go on a new adventure every episode could have been awesome!

This one kind of makes me sad because, even though I've never actually seen Atlantis, this looks like it could have been a pretty good show. The animation looks super cheap and lazy, at times, but the plots sound pretty intriguing. It could have probably been right up there with the other Disney animated shows based off movies. Those were all pretty good, so I imagine that if this one had been picked up, it could have probably ended up being really good.

I thought this cartoon looked more like Stargate: Infinity instead of Atlantis the Lost Empire. It had no focus and had low budget, I thought they were going to make an actual Atlantis sequel, but they just used three episodes that were part of a cancelled series.

Atlantis did borrow from Stargate, but I was surprised how this sequel was too similar to that Fox cartoon that had nothing to do with Stargate. And I saw the original Atlantis movie, but this one probably had similar animation to SG Infinity, and their stories don't connect well.

andrewkful I'm pretty sure he does know, he's either doing it for comedic effect of making a case for people that go into seeing these movies not aware it's a pilot to an upcoming tv show. Personally, on a technical stand point, I think a movie is quite shitty if you need to research the source material (e.g some YA films based on novels) in order to understand the movie.

MissNotSoCool 96 "I'm pretty sure he does know". Then how come he came off as saying "oh god this is a pilot to a TV show, isn't it!??" And if he did mean it as a joke, it doesn't work, because in the previous cheapquel videos he said he knew they WERE pilots.

Well considering it is also a TV pilot (although not a compilation of episodes strung together.) and focuses on his least favorite part of the original, he might not like it at all. But if he says it's pointless I'm gonna call him out. Good? maybe not. absolutely necessary? absolutely not. but not pointless. The concept was pretty much set in stone since movie one when you found out he was #626.
