What really makes me think is just how would the Leviathan fare against a more modern submarine's weaponry. These "torpedoes" seem to be closer in size to man-portable anti-tank missiles, and they doubtlessly have more primitive explosive fillers given this is pre-World War 1. Not to mention their submarine's likely using MUCH weaker construction techniques, due to using crappier steel *and* being of ribbed and riveted construction instead of solid plates welded together. While I don't know how fast this sub's capable of going, I do know the fastest (officially...) Attack submarine in the world is the Soviet/Russian Akula-class, with a top recorded speed of 41 knots (47.1 miles per hour / 75.9 kilometers per hour).

I think they put up an excellent fight for what they had. If you look at the later shots of the Subpods, every surviving Subpod's torpedo racks are completely empty. They literally threw every bit of ordinance (minus the Ulysses' own torpedo magazines, she only got four shots off) that they had at the Leviathan, and it didn't dent it. However, given that the leviathan actually maneuvered to shield its face from the four shots from the Ulysses, I think she may have been able to destroy or at least damage it, if they had gotten a clear shot at the thing's face. It's a brutal reality of naval combat. I read an account of a British sailor on HMS Warspite who operated one of the guns. An enemy shell landed near one of the loading systems between the gun and the magazine (shell storage) and the bridge ordered him to "flood the magazine". Water tanks were built with valves to flood the magazine to prevent a fire spreading to it and detonating the shells (which will destroy the entire ship). He knew there were 2 men in the magazine sending shells to the loaders to transport them to the guns. They would have no warning and no chance of escaping the room if he turned the valve. When he was ordered to, he turned it without hesitation.

Hatches had to be closed with Sailors behind them, knowing they would drown and die. If those hatches weren't shut, they probably would have lost the entire ship, and than you have 300 casualties, and that's for a destroyer, which is small. @B P I think that the Leviathan was actually curious, in as much as it could be. Look at all of the other wrecks in its lair, they are all (aside from the Easter egg of the Nautilus in one scene) surface vessels. The Leviathan had probably never seen anything like the Ulysses before and was trying to determine what exactly it was holding. The Ulysses is likely the most advanced vehicle it's ever seen, and the first thing even approaching Atlantean tech levels. In fact, I'll go farther with this: following the subpod launch, pay attention to the Leviathan's behavior. It has the Ulysses in it's smaller claws, but it isn't attacking. It doubtless had enough strength between it's smaller and larger claws to crush the sub, or it could just hold it still while it vaporized it with it's cannon, it did neither. Further, it seemed to be swimming DOWN with the sub, perhaps towards its lair? Unless it was being sadistic and trying to find the submarine's crush depth, I suspect that the Leviathan was going to immobilize the Ulysses, take it to its lair, and signal the Atlanteans that it had found something new. Notice how there was already an Atlantean hunting party out very far afield tracking our heroes throughout the film? Why would they be out there, if not for knowing that something was coming? When the humans attacked, it switched over to full combat mode, but its initial attacks seemed more probing and curious then 'destroy everything on sight'

My only question is the same as everyone else's: why the HELL did the Atlantean civilization feel the need to design and build this thing (the rest of human civilization was barely into the BRONZE AGE at this point, much less the point where we could "maybe" take something like that on; today) and why on God's green earth did they have to build MORE THAN ONE?! With a weapon like that on ancient earth, they could have conquered the planet, single-handedly. However, at the start of the film we saw that they had at least a squadron of 4 of them, which from the looks of things were part of a deployed task force and not a standing defense fleet, so presumably there are even more of them out there. This leads to a chilling conclusion: you don't amass that sort of overwhelming firepower unless you feel that there is absolutely no other choice, so what was Atlantis up against that they felt the need to construct Leviathans to counter? It obviously wasn't humanity, and the implications are... disturbing.

Although its doubtful, maybe the leviathan wasn't buit for war in the first place... or maybe even as a war machine, it had other purposes that made building more of them not a bad idea, even if no foe could really stand against one. The fact it can hold massive objects in its 2 sets of pincers allowed it to be of use when building massive structures, and maybe the ray could be used as a welding tool of some kind, or more likely, to carve stone on a massive scale when not at full power. That cuould have made the leviathan a valuable asset even in peace time to build, for exemple, the stone giants that erect the shield at the end, or some other Atlantean structure or machine. Just some ideas... maybe they put several of them in the opening sequence just for the cool factor :p

To this day, I can confidently say now as a grown adult, this is one of the most if not THE most intense escape scenes, underwater scenes, and monster scenes ever to grace any screen. Animated or otherwise. It was such a brutally heart-pumping sequence that I am so very glad was put in a kids movie. It scratched that itch for REAL INTENSE action and deadly peril, without being overbearing, goofy, or innappropirate. I remember having goosebumps for days after watching this as a kid, and so far, nothing has come close to a scene quite like this. Theres no real way to describe it. It just invokes a very desperate, adrenaline-fueled emotion, where you find yourself rooting for the humans, while also being very intrigued by the mystery brought on by the imposing "machine's" sudden discovery and attack. It should also be said that I appreciate the structure of the characters. Everyone had a job to do. It was chaos, but it wasnt "mindless" chaos. The people were trained, and acted accordingly. The leaders were bewildered, but composed. Despite losses, everyone cooperated, and because of that, souls survived what would have been a complete wipe. This is an important theme to promote. Especially nowadays where scenes portray everyone just getting thrown into a chaotic panick and loses their minds to portray a "realistic reaction" (lol) and the main character just haphazardly bumbles his way into surviving despite an utter lack of competence from his peers.

You are absolutely right which is why good old Disney movies were never purely for kids. They were family movies. Things for adults yo understand but still presented in a way that kids could watch. Indeed in most films they show people in complete chaos even if those were supposedly trained fellows getting lost in panic till the veteran main character comes to save the day. His reasons for being there aside, both he and Lt. Helga are exceedingly good and effective at their jobs. Rourke himself is calm, cool, collected, never lets his subordinates see his doubts or misgivings (which he WILL have, unless he's a robot), maintains morale, is charismatic, and always has a plan. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of his people, uses them to maximum effect, and even though he will spend their lives if he has to (this is part of being a military leader) to achieve the mission, he (and they) know he will not do so uselessly or without need. Helga is disseminates Rourke's commands to the soldiers, is less charismatic but maintains respect, ensures discipline within the group, respects the chain of command, enforces order, and keeps track of the day-to-day stuff like ammo stocks, foodstocks, etc, freeing Rourke up to focus on the long-term. An ideal XO. Both were the best kind of villains, and ones that are rapidly becoming rare these days in media. Competent, focused, powerful, effective, and thus very very dangerous.

Judging by what we're shown later, the Leviathan survivors include: * Milo * Rourke * Helga * Mole * Vinny * Audrey * Sweet * Packard * Cookie * 2 regular sailors * 4 engineers * 2 unmasked officers * At least 15 gas mask mercenaries That makes about 31 survivors out of a crew of 200. I thought I was the only one who was scared by the Leviathan; those beautifully designed and crafted pieces of warfare and destruction; so massive yet so tiny in the very first scene of the movie when the Atlantis disappear. And I still have chills when he comes through the "smoke" of the explosion at 2:26... With its big red eyes who tell you "he's coming at you and you know you can't escape him. It is the last thing you'll see before you die."
@hex99302 жыл бұрын
Ah the memories. Worth coming back to see this from time to time. But after rewatching this scene, it made me think of a "What if" moment such as: What if another Evac Boat managed to survive being deployed from the doomed submarine but was knocked off course by the explosion to the point where that Evac Boat with 50 to 100 souls onboard couldn't link up with the rest of the group as they made for the trench? It would be a very intense "Hide and Seek" game as the lone Evac Boat tries to navigate the seafloor while avoiding detection from the Leviathan class war machine. All while having to deal with the fact that knowing the vessel was damaged in the escape and is slowly coming apart. This undoubtedly would have me on the edge of my seat while hoping that lost Evac Boat struggles to find that air pocket inside the trench where safety from the crushing waters and the Leviathan is assured.
