It's the annual fire season. Check previous years, you'll see this year's fires are pretty average when compared to the past 15 years. You'll also see that the affected area is not exclusive to Brazil. Huge fires are happening right now in Bolivia and Paraguay too. You won't hear about it tho, as the problem is being presented by the media as a consequence of right wing politics in Brazil. Political propaganda and left agenda spreading fear at its finest. :) We do need to take care of the forest but the truth must not be ignored.

The Amazon is a different ecosystem where there is plant life at the every height range so wildfires are devastating.

4 years ago, and 20 percent down yikes. The Congo basin in Africa traps 30billions tons of carbon which is 20 years of Americas carbon emissions. It's now been sectioned off for exploitation of oil/ lumber and ores. These nations need to develop but what is the solution? You can't build infrastructure on vapor, and there are just far too many people living in absolute poverty in these areas to justify telling them to stop so... The world better collaborate somehow, otherwise let's just all continue on this path since we seem to be more interested in reacting to extreme droughts than trying to prevent or slow them down.

@LA20475 жыл бұрын
I hate to be "that guy," but we're going to get all the way there eventually. Humans, for all their benefits, have some pretty glaring limitations. One is that we have an insatiable thirst for wealth. We don't learn to live within the confines of the ecosystem where we live, we seek to dominate it; to alter it to our suiting and then trust in our innovation and smarts to compensate, and we allow the few of us driven by nothing but power and wealth to do basically what they want if we believe that the ends justify the means in moving toward that innovation. In other words, if we believe it helps everyone today, then we'll allow those with a thirst for money/power a free hand without seriously considering the effects it has down the road. History is shockingly littered with examples of human shortsightedness. Second, we humans are woefully incapable of seeing the end game. All around us we act/react in a way that says we only care about what's right in front of us. To us 50, 25, ten, even five years in the future seems like a long way off, so we almost always ignore long-term damage in favor of immediate gratification. Lastly, we don't act until it's a crisis. We spend all kinds of efforts identifying problems and then who's to blame for them, but surprisingly little effort is spent on how to steer clear of issues that miiiight be a crisis later because hey, "what if we do all this stuff and spend all this money and make all these sacrifices and a crisis DOESN'T occur? Then what?! I'm not giving up my A/C and cheeseburgers and monster SUV unless you can prove to me without any shadow of a doubt that if I don't the earth will plummet into the sun, just so a bunch of tree huggers can go watch a bunch of monkeys swing in threes on another continent." So because we can always find someone to counter an argument in any science that doesn't produce one, indisputable fact we do nothing (like the guys who refuse to believe climate change is real because they step outside and it's cold). That is we do nothing until we simply can't avoid it any longer and when, sadly, there's no way to completely eradicate the damage done. What's a crisis? Well, human behavior suggests a crisis is defined as something that has, will, or very likely could affect US. Not us as a collective, but us as an individual. We don't seem to offer any real signs that we truly care enough about anything that's only affecting others, in anything other than short bursts (like when we all donate water/food/blankets after a hurricane, but then forget about it after the next news cycle and stop contributing further or when we give huge amounts of food during Thanksgiving and Christmas, but do nothing the rest of the year, as if hunger only happens at the holidays). But, when the event affects us personally, THEN it's a crisis and we leap into action. So a global crisis, to me, will happen only once we humans have f*cked up this planet so badly that huge, vast majorities of our national populations are being personally affected by the damage we've done. Only then will we care, and even then we'll only care about what helps US locally, even if that hurts somewhere else more. Honestly I don't know what can be done differently because it feels to me like doing so would require a fundamental shift in the way humans behave, and I don't see that as likely until we have no other choice. The only uncertainly is, which crisis will effect enough of us directly to force that change? Even then, there will be a significant number of humans who won't give a crap because they will have the resources to avoid the penalty the rest of us will pay. Rosy picture I paint, isn't it?

It's the annual fire season. Check previous years, you'll see this year's fires are pretty average when compared to the past 15 years. You'll also see that the affected area is not exclusive to Brazil. Huge fires are happening right now in Bolivia and Paraguay too. You won't hear about it tho, as the problem is being presented by the media as a consequence of right wing politics in Brazil. Political propaganda and left agenda spreading fear at its finest. :) We do need to take care of the forest but the truth must not be ignored.

@MaxAcVa2000 not neccisarily true, infact fire is much better for the soil than clear cutting, fire burns down resources to their base mineral forms, this creates massive amounts of potassium which is fertilizer, the amazon was once intentionally burned by tribal groups thousands of years ago and is one of the reasons why the soil is able to support many of it's species. Fertilizer used to be burned wood in clay pots (potash) and is the root for the word potassium. Potassium is used in fruiting and blooming plants, and terra preta is a special type of dirt unique to the amazon that is incredibly rich in microbes and nutrients, in a relatively hard to farm region. Some historians think this is exactly how large Mayan and Aztec populations were supported, as well as other populations that thrived at one point in the amazon. The deliberate burning on the scale we are doing so is extremely dangerous still however, the natural process is from forest fires, and is how forests recover. In the mass burning and clearing for agriculture the land is not given a chance to recover, permanently changing it. We are at risk!

Some people here seem to have some misconceptions about the fires in Brazil so I'll try to clear things up a little on what it's about. The farmers annually burn down forest for more farm land during summers when it's drier. The burning if rainforest has increased by 83% from last year. In years before that the area burned had been reducing. This increase is artributed to the newly elected president, a person who doesn't care about climate change, Bolsonaro who encouraged farmers to burn more lands in hopes of boosting Brazil's economy. The situation is now so bad that the city of Sao Paulo lost electricity, several flights have been cancelled due to decrease in visibility and the northern state of Roraima has been covered in smoke which is clearly visible from satellite images of the area. According to Bolsonaro it's nothing to worry about. He has called INPE(national institute of space research) liers and even fired their previous director after they reported about the effects of the fires last month. He has also blamed environmental protection organizations for burning the forest in an effort him look bad. But even he himself has admitted that he has no proof to support these claims. From major news stations at least Reuters has reported on this.

Sam ecosia is basicly google, except firstly it doesn’t track you, not sure if google does or not but ecosia doesn’t, secondly every time you search you are helping them grow trees, they use the ad revenue from your searches to plant trees, I believe it was about 98% of all their profits go towards planting trees and saving the environment

So if there were less trees would that start to affect the low pressure climate as there would be less evapotranspiration to feed the system? Possibly leading to the disruption of other pressure differentials across the planet?
@Hockeyskill95 жыл бұрын
You forgot one of the biggest reasons to preserve the rainforest. The runoff from the delta and the air carries nutrients that feed oceanic photosynthesis marine life that produces about 70% of all the oxygen in the atmosphere. Even though the rainforest might not have a large net output of oxygen, it feeds the life that does. And without this marine life, the oxygen in the atmosphere will go away because oxygen is a reactive element that is almost never found alone without life producing it.

Phytoplankton should be a bigger worry. Prioritizing trees is like saving electricity by unplugging chargers when your not using them instead of turning your lights off when you don’t need them. Yes, it’s good to focus on trees, but the latter is much more important.

Hello from 2020, when "Brazil minister calls for environmental deregulation while public distracted by COVID" We (brazilians) don't even benefit from this, only the people who forge papers saying they own the land do. Brasil will become a wasteland and the whole world will suffer. Bolsonaro still says that deforestation is necessary for economic development, but 10 years from now Brasil will be infertile since the whole country depends on "flying rivers" (tl;dr evaporation from the amazon rains over the whole country) and as a agricultural country, we will be broke as hell. He also wants to legalize mining on preserved areas. Many brazilians are working to impeach bolsonaro, but there are still ~30% of populance who still back him up. But those people are brainwashed and will support him no matter what, just like a nazi would support hitler no matter what, but instead of fuhrer they call him "the myth" (yes that also sounds stupid in portuguese). Many military high ranks also support him and actively claim for a military coup (just like they did in 1964). He recently called for his supporters to arm themselves to rise up against state governors and mayors who are against him and who instaurated quarantine. Bolsonaro sees himself as a godsend and thinks he is not only as president, but also as a king. He wants full power and no responsibility, so he often attacks and tries to get rid of any democratic institutions that could stop him or criminalize his actions. He is also a COVID denier and actively say it is a hoax made up by communists to take him down. He wants to open everything up and use cloroquine (which doesn't fucking work) to "protect from COVID". This is not only a threat to Brasil, but also to the whole world since the spread will be disastrous. He will cause a genocide and use to rise in power amid chaos. Also, be wary of their tactics. Bolsominions will always respont to any criticism with either: - Your country has done deforestation in the past, so it's ok for us to do it now - You're a communist and you're getting paid by the Workers Party (PT) - The big media is conspiring against "the myth" If you're from outside Brasil, please just look up evething about Bolsonaro, he is XXI's century Mussolini, and he will inflict great pain on the world. We need to spread the truth about him, and foreign nations need to pressure Brasil economically because that's the only language brazilian politicians understand.
