The moment where I found the Siofra River Well in the Mistwood, went down the elevator expecting maybe a larger-than-average dungeon, and instead finding an entire world space right below Limgrave was magical. The Altus Plateau was a great exercise in contrast, the regal decadent splendor of the Golden Order right beside the visceral horrors of the windmill village and the forest filled with Wormfaces. And Leyndell. Whoooo boy, Leyndell. Walking through that entrance, seeing Gransaxx’s gigantic corpse, discovering the fortified manor was oddly familiar, ascending the towers upon the vines of the Erdtree, and then discovering there was an entire sewer system beneath the city that served as a whole other dungeon itself! 👌Peak FromSoft.

Video's finally here! Well, guess it's time Checkpoint, May 4th, 2023: Last week was my last week of Judo for the season. I learned a lot, even if it was a rather short time (around half of a regular season due to joining mid-way through), and I'm incredibly thankful I got to do it. Overall, it's improved my life quite a bit, through physical exercise as well as providing a healthy environment for me to socialise in. When I told my sensei how thankful I was for all that it provided me before I left, he told me that I really applied myself to it. It's bittersweet, having to go, but I know for sure I'll be back this September for a full season, and I'll claim my full yellow belt. Truth be told, I'm proud of myself, which is a really really good feeling that I'm not sure I feel enough. Also, something rather fun that I've acquired through Judo, I can roll like a goddamn dark souls character now. Thanks for reading, if you have. (Edit: Buddy brought the tassels, goddayum)

Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 are my favorites. Mainly Bloodborne. The atmosphere of the whole game really sticks with me more than anything in the other games. The sounds of the clinging and scratching of the scary dudes axes in Central Yharnam or the screaming of beasts in the background in certain areas. It's that constant fear that I love. Obviously, a game like Bloodborne is terrifying and gut wrenchingly sad, but the world itself is my comfort and another home for me. It's a friend to me. A friend i can go to whenever I'm at a bad point in my life and trust me.. I've had a fair amount of bad points. The world of Yharnam is a home that I'd get lost in for days straight. Thanks, Miyazaki. This has been my ted talk. Seeya.

That 'question mark' sound in Vendrick's theme is from the inclusion of the tritone in the chord. The tritone is just two notes, 3 semitones apart. It sounds 'evil' or I prefer, 'not of this world.' It sounds like they used some sort of dimished chord featuring the tritone. Diminished chords tend to sound really dark and weird because of that - they bend or remove the notes that give chords a sense of color and harmonic stability. The major scale has only one mode that has such a chord as the root, defining chord... locrian. The reason I mention this is because people call locrian the 'question mark' mode, because of that tritone in the root chord. The root chord of a mode or key is supposed to the 'home base' of the progression, a point where everything sounds resolved. Whereas the note placement in the locrian scale makes it so the home chord is unstable and essentially wants to become something else. None of the other modes of the major scale have that peculiarity, and it's what makes locrian sound mysterious and unsettling - a sound that's hard to pin down in an unnerving way, like something moving in the shadows that could be many things, none of which you know. The dissonance in that tritone is 'leading,' it wants to resolve and become a regular minor or major chord. But in this case it can't, because it's already home. It's leaving you strung up in that suspense. And it's funny... locrian is notoriously hard to use in songwriting, but many times, when it IS used, they drone out on that root note the whole time, to keep the 'question' open and drive home that restless tension, rather than let it start to sound more distinctly minor or major as it would when moving away from the root. It's sort of like an endless staircase - you keep thinking there's gonna be something at the top... IF there's a top. But you only ever find yourself on those same stairs and it confounds you. It's like our brains don't know what to do with those sounds. Vendrick's theme does eventually lean into those somber, devastation-laden minor chords. But it starts off hanging around that diminished chord for a good bit, evoking a tiny bit of that dark/uncertain locrian feel. And in fact, the little sprinklings of melody over top sound almost atonal, not really in any particular key, making it extra-jarring. You don't hear stuff like this in very much music out there - it takes a certain person to figure out how to do it right. Most musicians I know don't bother with the stuff you need to write music like this. Metal and Jazz are basically the two exceptions where it becomes much more common. Tritones are everywhere, but not often as like, a foundational thing - they get hidden in transitions where it doesn't even register as dissonance, so you just don't hear it like it sounds in Vendrick's jawn. Most of the time, composers/songwriters avoid it, so when the tritone is put front and center, it really cuts through you.

Loved reading this man where can I learn about music theory like this?
@differentbutsimilar7893
@differentbutsimilar7893 11 ай бұрын
@@InternetPitstop Late AF, but if I recommended just ONE channel to you, it's 8-Bit Music Theory. You will learn tons about how composition in video games (and really music in general) works. He likes to explain it for both the the musician nerds and laymen, with lots of direct examples both audio and video. Dude will flip your skull back with nothing but Super Nintendo music. If nothing else, you'll never hear anything the same again if you digest 10% of it. I don't even say that condescendingly. More like, 10% of the understanding is roughly 5 years of active progress ime. He's giving away a lot for those wise enough to put all of the info together. Try Signals Music Studio, too. It's all guitar-centric, but he gives you pretty deep modal theory for free on his channel, again constantly with examples you can hear. It IS centered around guitar, but because of that he constantly gives perfect examples of whatever he's talking about on his guitar. Cheers to you for even wanting to understand this stuff, it's pretty rare these days. HMU if you have questions. If I can't answer, I'll tell you. But otherwise I'd be happy to try. Music theory is really complicated right until you have an instrument in decently skilled hands... then stuff like this becomes a playground for you. I've only told you what I understood by ear, off the cuff read that comes to me immediately. You can learn this stuff too, without being Joe Satriani or whatever, and you'll just enjoy music more. Though honestly, if you are curious about this, I think you're ready to pick an instrument. No joke, it's seriously that rare to give this stuff a second thought - if it interests you that much, pursue an instrument and rake up the free life fulfillment - pick the one that sounds best to you, that consistently gets you excited when you hear it. It's only competitive if you want it to be. If you want to understand how music works, you can learn a lot more by making it than studying it, let alone drawing comparisons. It's all far easier to understand once you reach the baseline skill to lock in with literally any particular instrument that's interested you. 6 months to a year of attention to it, just as something a bit like playing a tough game toi unwind and escape, - you realize it's an ever expanding rabbit hole and it just becomes a supermassive open-world environment. Imagine a 100% perfected and infinite 'Sekiro" with a gameplay loop like a steep and glassy summer wave of sweet corn syrup Mtn Dew Baja Blast. It's the best dark souls that never ends, and the rewards are just increasingly bitchin riffs. Highly recommend that channel tho. Recc's from there will prolly plug you in. But again, I've been playing guitar for 20 years of 33 on planet earth, so feel free to ask questions, and I'll try not to make it take months.

One of my favorite moments in Elden Ring was in the Haligtree's graveyard before the Melania fight. After clawing your way through this hellish area and killing dozens of knights and the like you see this graveyard filled with knights resting, praying, and staring at the graves of their lost comrades. This small interaction instantly made me realize that these knights that protect the Haligtree aren't just spooky zombie men, but outcasts trying to protect their found home and loved ones.

Reminds me of when I saw someone playing a Metal Slug game in an arcade cabinet as a kid. There were solider enemies on one screen in a "chatting it up" animation, and seeing them scream in surprise before being engaged blew my mind. It also blew my mind when they'd gather up in the location you died only to start laughing at you.... until you respawn and they start screaming again like you were a dead person that came back to life. There was so much attention to details on those games.

When you got abducted by the big bag man in Bloodborne. As you said, there is so rarely overworld music in souls games, that when I woked up, dazed after that impromtu kidnapping, in that somber cell ... And hear the chanting ... I was glued to my chair, my eyes darting in anxiety, heart racing, hands sweating ... Amazing.

My two favourite moments of Bloodborne are going to Yarhar’gul early and hearing “Hail the Nightmare” it was so unnerving and immediately put you on edge as soon as you woke up in that jail cell. The other would be Upper Cathedral Ward. I’ve beaten Bloodborne numerous times and the pure terror of Upper Cathedral Ward never goes away, it still terrifies me and that is entirely due to the nightmarish atmosphere it evokes.

You never dissapoint and YOU are getting better at your videos. I love to see a channel like this growing to be exactly the kind of content that I want to watch. Furthermore, your passion for Dark Souls is driving you to some great topics. I feel so identify because, as I told you, we expirienced most of the same culture and experiences that made us who we are today. This is even more “curious” (For lack of a better word) given that you are from the other side of the border and still we share a lot without knowing it.

Checkpoint: May 5th, 2023 These past few months I have been exercising again to improve my health and self-esteem and am trying to decide on which martial art to go into. Am thinking either judo or jujitsu. I've also taken up gardening with my grandfather because it's rather therapeutic and helps in bonding with him since we used to be a bit distant. We've also been helping my sister manage her depression so she isn't sleeping all day and spiraling further. Not going to be easy, but nothing worth while is. Still lots I wanna do, but I'm sure I'll get there. Thanks IP for making your videos, they do a lot to improvemy mood. As well as introducing the Checkpoint thing. Can't wait to see the next video. People always talk about the rich atmosphere that the world and game design give to the player, but honestly for me the best atmospheric moments in these games are found in Demon's Souls and Dark Souls title screen and character creation menus. In demon's souls everything is complete silence and pitch black until the title fades in with weird distorted sounds just to be silent again until you get to the character creation menu that plays a beautiful but strange song. In Dark Souls you hear nothing, the title fades in, and then you press start and get jumpscared with that "sword unsheathing" sound effect , to then listen to that main menu soundtrack that is so calming, dreamy and ethereal. After Dark Souls 2 (that also has this dreamy and esoteric vibe to the main menu soundtrack) every title screen has some grandiose cresciendo soundtrack. DS3, Sekiro and Elden Ring they all just start blasting your ears with the most epic soundtrack (that also is the main theme of the game), not leaving space for an atmosphere to settle. In Bloodborne the menu soundtrack calm and the epic but nontheless gives that gothic/lovecraft feeling. Nowdays I really appreciate the older games's title screen atmosphere work, with unique songs that you can only listen there, they are calm, beautiful and make you feel safe but also hint at the weird and deppressing world that waits for you beyond the main menu. That for me is atmosphere building at its finest and the game didn't even start yet.

You described Hunter's Dream very well, because at the end of the day it is A DREAM, it's nice and comforting, but you know you probably shouldn't hang in there for a long time, because getting stuck in a Dream forever is a scary thought. Imagine in real life that when you are sleeping and you are aware that you are dreaming (you are lucid dreaming), but you feel like you cannot escape it and wake up. It would be terrifying to say the least. That's why Hunter's Dream has that feel of a comforting place you shouldn't spend a lot of time in. Seeing the agony Gehrman goes through only amplifies the feeling.

what sets demon's souls apart from the others to me is that demon's is so heavily immersed in a purely medieval and semi realistic atmosphere while the other souls games are more high fantasy and anachronistic. really gives you that oppressive vibe of being a peon in the middle ages where everything is out to kill you, harm you, deceive you, starve you and there is no way out but death

TBF, if I was a giant monster with god-level strength who's every move was like a house flying in random directions, I'd hang the wind-ups just to milk the fear a little more. I think these bosses enjoy toying with their prey. They're looking down on us, laughing as we roll frantically, while they stand there doing nothing but watching. And then when they get bored, they finally hit you. "Ahahah, this is good fun, but seriously now... time to die. Have a good one!" I got a few. Ashes of Ariandel and the Ringed City in DS3 really hammer home that end of the world vibe. In bloodborne the research hall took what made yharnam creepy and cranked it up to 10. And lastly in elden ring there is the Haligtree. It's such a beautiful locked away location that only so few have been able to reach. Plus it's now in a slow state of decay since Miquella was kidnapped. There's a brilliant mix of vibrant light and gold, with the festering decay of scarlet rot

Thank you for making a video that focuses so heavily on the atmosphere of this series. It's truly what I love about this series and many of my favorite games. Bloodborne is my favorite and the whole atmosphere of that game is amazing. If you look at the artbook, you can see how the game devs may have been inspired to translate the dread and horror. Plus Castle Cainhurst was just amazing for completely optional area. Dark Souls 3's marriage scene with Anri is also very atmospheric at least to me.

What I really love and what really sets you and your content apart from many other creators is how much you talk about your experience, your impressions, with what interest and passion you talk about it! Not just a dry set of facts, guys, this anime / game / film was made by such and such a person, it has such and such a plot, and so on. No. You share your impressions, a real person, and for this your content is very, very valuable. Thank you. waiting for new videos.

"Not just a dry set of facts" thing is, alot of souls youtubers tend to delude themselves that they are actually speaking facts as if they are game developers, what they are is basically fans like us but with microphones, recorders and some good writing skills, with a deluded sense of armchair game developer narrative in their heads. not pitstop though, hes one of the only gaming youtubers i remained sub too purely for the reasons you mentioned in ur comment, the dude can differentiate between subjective opinions and dry facts.

An experience that will always be special to me was very early in my first Elden Ring playthrough. The first time i found the nomadic merchant in the north of Limgrave, i was genuinely so enthralled by his music that i just sat my character down next to him for a long time, listening to him play and watching the golden leaves falling in the night sky. It may not be much compared to the more obvious examples people could name for the game's top notch atmosphere, but regardless the gentle simplicity of this moment is forever in my heart and i love going back to chill with this guy 🫶
