Good video. Just one stupid question pls : 9:50 you mention here that if the alpha particle happens to hit the electron it would hit the electron like a bus hit a fly because its much more massive. In this case could the alpha particle knock out the electron and ionize the atom ?

Precisely.

I've been curious as to how an electron/positron could be emitted from the nucleus of an atom for a while now, as when I was learning about radiation in physics my teacher didn't go into any detail about why that was the case for beta radiation. This video has been immensely helpful in helping me finally understand it. Thank you!

Is all that information on Atomic Theory in GCSE course of study? In Poland, where I study, at the 14-16 year old level we learn very little about atoms. We're only told that elctrons orbit protons (which I really hate for the reason that we are never told how huge of a simplification it is) and their charges and masses. But nothing about quarks or radiation. I don't really like that we learn so little about subatomic structure because I find it very interesting. Luckily there are people like you, thanks to whom I can understand more complicated physics :) To be honest you're the person that motivated me to start expanding my math knowledge as well because I'm really interested in GR and QM which obviously require a lot higher level of math than I know and both of them are covered on your channel. That means that I can be a 100% sure that if I know the math I will understand all the concepts perfectly. Keep up the good work!

The syllabus for different courses will vary. I am trying to cover in my videos the syllabus material of a number of different courses so no one student will necessarily need all this information. But I hope it serves as useful background information.

Thank for the great video! Keep posting the good stuff ;) One comment on the Aristotle/Democritus-thing, even though it isn't really of the essence. They never were in debate, since Democritus and Aristotle probably never met, and were from a (slightly) different era. Aristotle just made a lame re-buff against Democritus' arguments in one of his texts that survived the ages, as he did with so many other pre-socratic philosophers. Nevertheless, really love it when history and philosophy are engaged to enrich the physics

It was Democritus and Aristotle. Not Archimedes.

If a down quark has a -1/3 charge, does that mean the elementary charge is not so elementary, and we only call it that for historical reasons?
@DrPhysicsA

Yes. Having fractional charges for the up and down quarks means that the charge on the electron which we always thought was the lowest possible elementary charge is not now so elementary.
