Recently had a scammer reach out to a family member. We had posted 2 dogs that had escaped to an online regional pet locator group and the scammer called them saying he was "Officer Armstrong" and that he had the 2 dogs. But the location he gave was about 30 miles away yet the dogs had only been gone for about 15 minutes. He followed with that he needed to send a "confirmation code" to verify that "we were real and not scammers". Of course the confirmation code would likely be some kind of account password reset code, and I told the family member to not communicate any further with this person. The dogs were eventually located by someone a few streets away.

ikr. I can't support their actions but seeing how they live I can understand why they chose it. Comparatively, even a working class American usually lives in better conditions. I can see how they could come to resent those who they see as living comparatively like kings, enough to justify theft and fraud. It only makes it worse that even a lot of people in first world countries don't fully appreciate how most others in their country live. A lot of the stuff you see on TV and social media is only representative of the upper middle class and upper class of the wealthiest countries, which probably only makes the class divide feel even greater when you're at the bottom. If you live in a rusty shack in a third world country, why wouldn't you steal from the Kardashians if you have the opportunity? Hell, if they _were_ stealing from only the upper class, I wouldn't care at all. Most of the wealth owned by the upper class is itself stolen from workers or subsidized by tax money after all. But they don't. They disproportionately steal from people who are also struggling to make ends meet. They don't hit the wealthiest people, because even if the rich people themselves are gullible, they have people to watch their money and vet correspondence _for_ them. Truly, the only way to fight crime is to fight poverty. It won't abolish all crime, but if people have a modest, but comfortable standard of living and the income gap is quashed, I think crime will naturally plummet. We can do it, we just don't. Instead we hand money hand over fist to the richest of the richest so they can take their private jet to get lunch in Paris or buy $20,000 scarves or whatever. Its disgusting.
