Atorvastatin is used to treat high cholesterol and triglyceride levels. An alternative treatment is to adjust your diet. My doctor wanted me to start using atorvastatin. I refused. I adjusted my diet instead. My cholesterol level went from 214 to 118, and my triglyceride level went from 517 to 106. People don't need a statin drug if they are willing to change to a healthier diet.

I would like to comment as a pharmacist who has been taking atorvastatin for over 10 years. Ostensibly, diet and exercise should be the mainstay of the management of hyperlipidemia. However, when lifestyle changes are not successful then statins should be utilized and are highly effective and very safe in the vast majority of patients. I would encourage every patient managing this disorder to work closely with their health care provider, and if during the course of treatment one’s lipid profile improves dramatically then reducing the statin dosage should be considered. With stringent dietary restrictions and exercise and the ensuing weight loss, it may be possible to stop the medication. Kudos to the clinician making this video, especially her advice toward the end.

@Jeffrey Anderson Okay, I will comment as a recently-retired nurse with 23 years work experience in healthcare. Most doctors don't talk about lifestyle changes. They just hand you a prescription and then politely tell you to get out of their office.

A few years ago I started atorvastatin for my cholesterol. I’m an active 55 year old. I exercise most days. I took a TRX class at the gym was was at the end of a busy week of mountain biking and several days of golf. After the class I was sore like never before. I could barely walk. I went urine at the end of the day and it was like coffee. I called the doctor and they had me go to the e/r. After blood work, I was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. That is the dying of muscles and toxins are released into your blood. I ended up staying in the hospital for four days while they flushed my system with large volumes of saline. Although this is very rare, keep an eye out. If you’re active, stay hydrated. If you work out, don’t overdo it. Listen to your body.

Contracted Rhabdo as well from Lipitor. In two days, went from feeling fine to couldn't hold my head up or walk 3 feet across the room. Was in the hospital for nearly a month and then 3 weeks at a temp care facility. Had urine like chocolate milk. Had to learn how to walk again and use leg muscles damaged by the Rhabdo. That was 9 years ago now - 2013. Require the use of a rolator walker (wheels and has seat) as I can only walk 75-100 yards at a time, then need to sit and rest legs for a minute. But I'm walking. Another family member was put on atorvastatin, their reaction to it was problems with their gums. Within 2 weeks of starting, noticed tooth pain. Could use fingers to actually move each tooth. All their teeth were moving as the gums stopped supporting the teeth. Dr took them off the med. Took about 4 months for gums and teeth to get back to normal. Figured if kept taking the med - for them anyway - would have lost all their teeth due to reactions of the gums to the med. Crestor was another branded statin. It was also noteworthy for causing rhabdo. It has since been taken off the market. In 2020 there were a couple of new meds in final testing to reduce LDL's and were not statin drugs, and so don't carry some of the possibilities of muscle damage.

Hey, John012196 ! Did your doctor say that the weakening of your muscles was an unusual side effect of Atorvastatin ? If that's the case, he lied to you, because it's a well-known fact that Atorvastatin ALWAYS weakens your muscles, more for some than others. I told my doctor that, since it weakens muscles, I wouldn't be taking it, because it could do damage to my heart. He said, "Yes, but not your heart.". How in the world could that be ? What a blatant lie ! My response to him was, since your heart is the hardest working muscle in your body, how could Atorvastatin not harm your heart, as well ? He brushed that off and insisted that I take it. I refused, and that's all there is to it. At 73, old age weakens me and I'm not willing to speed up that process. A doctor wants to keep his medical license, so he listens to what the AMA tells him to do. He will not deviate from it, regardless of what it actually does to his patients. According to a British research facility, no amount of exercise and going to the gym will ever restore your muscle strength, once your statin drug has done it's damage. IT IS PERMANENT !

My mom had been taking Crestor for years without problems, but then when Lipitor went generic the pharmacy switched her to atorvastatin and it was right before she went on a group trip to NYC. After she got there, her legs went stiff as a board and hurt very badly. She couldn't get around the city and had to have help. After she got back to Houston, I told her to stop the atrovastatin and get her doctor to put her back on the Crestor -- no more problems. This was maybe a decade ago and still no problems taking rosuvastatin every day.

Side effects of statins is largely made up. People attribute normal every day aches and pains to the statin they are taking. Serious side effects like liver damage is extremely rare. Statins frigging work! If people should be taking them well BEFORE they develop significant plaque build up in their blood vessels heart attacks and ischemic strokes could be cut nearly in half.

Went to the ER and my troponin (protein in the blood released when heart is damaged) was high, indicating I was having a "cardiac incident." I actually had a heart attack in the ER and then had a quintuple bypass. I'm now on Atorvastatin and blood pressure medication. I escaped death once, I will not risk it again. I had issues with Atorvastatin, and at the age of 51, after more than 6 months of taking it, I had pain in my back, and shoulders joints (when lifting my arms, like an impingement (I couldn't even do pushups without severe pain). I had visits with several doctors, including Orthopedics surgeon. An X-RAY, and MRI didn't reveal much, except a "possible" Rotator cuff damage. Not enough for surgery and they had me attend physical therapy. Several weeks of Therapy didn't help relieve the pain, and then my knees started giving me pain (I felt like I had aged 20 years in the past 3 months), and the pain was preventing me from enjoy my long walks, bikes, and light jogging. I checked with my pharmacist, asking them if one, or a combination of the medications I had been prescribed could be causing this. They indicated it is common for patients to have issues with Atrovastastin, or another statin, and recommended having my doctor switch to another statin. For months I stopped taking Atorvastatin, and within 4 days all my pain stopped. However, my next doctor visit my physician indicated that my cholesterol was elevated compared to previous tests (not high in comparison with the normal population, but I have another medical condition where it is recommended that mine be lower to prevent kidney complications). After I informed them of the issue, they prescribed Rosuvastatin and I continued to not have any join pain. However, I can't help but wonder if these statins are preventing me from getting a good night sleep?

I was prescribed atorvastatin Irbersartan with no consideration of family history of diabetes after a mild stroke. while on these statins I experienced depression cramps that had me screaming in pain and sickness felt unable to do anything and head fog bad for months It’s POISON steer clear of it change your lifestyle Get off the grogs and smoking go walking and lose weight and stop stress, eat well. After forgetting to take it for several days I suddenly felt much better and haven’t taken it since lost weight and got off the beer. Eat beetroot and other things with like citrus fruits to lower blood pressure I am feeling great. Doctors do what they are told by big pharmaceutical corporations or face being sued. They are not acting in your best interest it’s all about your money.

Wow I was never aware of this. I had a Hemorrhagic stroke plus low thyroid with low kidney function and I was put on atorstatin and not taken off even though my cholesterol and triglycerides low. My blood sugar went up near pre diabetes but was not told that the blood sugar could be worsened by the statin.

My mother has been taking a statin medication for decades. She’s now 96 & 1/2. I’ve never known anyone else who has taken as many prescription drugs as my mom has. I’m now on Atorvastatin & I’m fine. Sometimes, one has little choice. Both my parents & my older sibling have high cholesterol so it seems to run in my family. 🇨🇦

Very informative video, folks, and wonderfully provided timestamps, which I've not seen before by any other medical information videos. I was put on statins for several years, until I refused to take them anymore because the pain in my upper arm muscles was so acute that I couldn't stand it anymore. I mentioned it to several of the GPs at my practice, but was more or less ignored, until I stopped accepting them when offered. Even now, my muscles still hurt, some years after I stopped taking statins.

I used to take Atorvastatin. My GP decided (as a type 1 diabetic on insulin) that I should take it without discussing the medication, side affects etc. My cholesterol has always been good. I stopped the statin without discussing. A few years later I had a regular blood test. The cholesterol was as good as ever! The nurse stated that was due to Atorvastatin. I said nothing but thought how funny that despite not taking the statin my cholesterol level is as good as ever.

I experienced a trans global amnesia event. Total loss of short term memory for about 12 hours. After some research, I stumbled onto a website from a former NASA flight surgeon who had similar statin side effects. He mentioned the fact that statins reduce the bodies levels of CoQ10. I would also frequently get "foggy" brain. Hard to concentrate and forgetting simple things like passwords that I usually entered automatically. As soon as I started taking CoQ10 supplements, the foggy brain disappeared. Also never had a relapse of the amnesia.

My father died of a heart attack at the age of 47, following long untreated cardiovascular disease. A few weeks ago, one of my brothers died at the age of 48, in very similar conditions. My brother refused statins following advice on the Internet from people who think they know better. When I was 27, I found out that my blood cholesterol is 380. Knowing the fate of my father, I warned my brothers. This one could not be convinced. Like my father, he got progressively sick. Almost all main arteries were obturated by more than 60%, so much so that he was deemed inoperable. For example, one of the two carotid arteries was fully blocked (!!!) and the other was 50% obturated. He became mentally sluggish, and it amazes me he managed to live for 4 more years. The left femoral artery was also fully blocked, but the leg managed to survive with the blood it was getting by diffusion. He could barely walk. I started statin treatment when I was 27. When I moved to Boston and NYC, the doctors at Mass General and Weill-Cornell scoffed at the low dose I was on. They increased it to 40 mg Atorvastatin. A recent abdominal CAT scan done for unrelated reasons showed minimal atherosclerosis of the abdominal artery (I am 50). Reading the report, I was thinking that my younger brother had it over 60% blocked. The difference? Statins. Do they have side effects? Yes, for me, mainly constipation. But until better medication is discovered, it is what it is. My brother was not an idiot. Out of curiosity, I looked at the people he was following on Facebook and KZbin. The last opened KZbin page on his computer, was for a Dr. Campbell who "convinced" him not to get vaccinated against Covid19, against the wishes of his doctors. (He died of a massive heart attack, not Covid.) My impression is that these people are not ill-intended, just not competent enough. I have a PhD in chemical physics, and I understand the science pretty well. Make sure the person you talk to is competent. Don't think you can just simply understand what is going on. It is impossible to learn enough chemistry and medicine to take sound decisions. Good luck!

It is atherosclerosis that is problematic, and it is high LDL-C that is the main cause of atherosclerosis in time. I think you should strive to decrease your LDL below 80 mg/dL or so. My experience with my family is that low LDL is the single most important factor controlling atherosclerosis. The other factors (exercise, not smoking, controlling weight) are of lesser impact and, honestly, more difficult to attain than taking statins. If you have hard-to-tolerate side effects, try other statins. If you are fine taking them, and your LDL is still too high, increase the dose to 40 mg (that's what I've been taking for over 20 years) or take 20 mg of rosuvastatin. Of course, your doctor needs to approve this. My knowledge is limited to my experience with my family.

Did you ever think that your father or brother should look into why their body has raised their cholesterol levels. YOu do know that the entire cholesterol-causes-heart disease theory has been debunked over and over. The statins have saved no one's life. Did their doctor instead tell them to stop using seed oil, stop eating sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and processed food? That is the place to start. A real doctor would have this discussion. Taking a statin would not have saved their lives. Giving up seed oils and margarines might have. There is no '"vaccine" against covid. Any one who declines this is very wise indeed.

I was in my mid 60s when I was prescribed Atorvastatin 40 mg/day for an elevated cholesterol level. My blood test revealed only the elevated cholesterol and a vitamin D deficiency as possible problems. I was asymptomatic, having no apparent medical problems. After about 3 months on the drug I noticed back itching, skin problems, numbness in my toes in both feet, severe and painful cramping of my calf muscles in both legs and an odorous urine. A subsequent blood test revealed that I was in stage 2 renal failure. I immediately stopped the Atorvastatin and adopted changes in my diet to lower my cholesterol. The results have been a partial remission in my symptoms. I haven't had a follow-up blood test to determine the current level of my kidney impairment, although I have limited my salt and protein intake and that seems to be doing well for me.
