Evan and Lia may still be legally married but there's a lengthy process to dissolve a legally binding relationship even when it's incredibly amicable with neither party doing anything shady. So "former romantic relationship" is a perfectly valid descriptor, because that's exactly what it is. It is in name only that the relationship remains while the dissolution proceedings take place. I've seen amicable dissolution proceedings take 18 months. If there's kids or finances/properties involved it takes longer to negotiate a fair split. So with Lia being shady as shit, it's not going to be an easy process at all. She'll be as toxic as possible for as long as possible just to make Evan spend more on his legal counsel.

I think their problem is that they're shady people trying to get over one another. A verbal contract is a mess waiting to happen, all the lying and hiding they did could have been hidden from the public instead their greed and pettiness exposed them. Partnerships both romantic and business related can work but both people should be honest and transparent, while having well written contracts revised by lawyers (like a prenup) to save themselves from any hassle in case they split up. I've seen cases where people split but keep working together. It just needs to be done rationally and forgetting the feelings involved.
