I’m unable to hear this song and not sing it at full volume. Since the death of my son, Corporal Specialist L. McDermott, US Army National Guard, I admit I bawl my eyes out as I do. I intend to do a live cover of this at some time, but y’all hit the vocal key far better than my raspy metal chords will do. Thank you, and God Bless. May Chris Cornell be granted forgiveness of all his faults, and sing in the Heavenly Chorus forever. P.S. I’m recovering from a pierced colon, and it’s not a fun experience. I spend my days twisted by pain medication, but it has loosened my tongue, so to speak. I have the urge to save the world, because I’m so tired of everything being miserable. I love y’all, everyone why reads this, along with anyone who doesn’t! Peace!

I like to think that Chris wrote it potentially about both love and death. And the idea of doing anything to end the pain this life unfortunately contained for him sadly making the end necessary. But he knows love is an eternal force that he’ll wait alone forever to have again.

Lyrics: On a cobweb afternoon In a room full of emptiness By a freeway I confess I was lost in the pages Of a book full of death Reading how we'll die alone And if we're good, we'll lay to rest Anywhere we want to go In your house, I long to be Room by room, patiently I'll wait for you there Like a stone I'll wait for you there Alone And on my death bed I will pray To the gods and the angels Like a pagan to anyone Who will take me to heaven To a place I recall I was there so long ago The sky was bruised The wine was bled And there you led me on In your house, I long to be Room by room, patiently I'll wait for you there Like a stone I'll wait for you there Alone Alone And on I read Until the day was gone And I sat in regret Of all the things I've done For all that I've blessed And all that I've wronged In dreams until my death I will wander on In your house, I long to be Room by room, patiently I'll wait for you there Like a stone I'll wait for you there Alone Alone thank you for the perfect cover Atreyu!

Chris Cornell was & will be one of my top 3 artists , losing really hit me deep. Bowie is another. When my little boy Keaton died in 03, one the way to his inurnment of his ashes a few weeks later, I Am the Highway came on the radio & I felt Keaton with me. Then everytime I heard it I knew it was his sign to tell me he's there. This song really spoke to me as well.. Years after he died someone sent me Chris' song "I Promise It's Not Goodbye" he wrote for a father who's little girl died after a long terminal illness similar to Keaton who was severe special needs & chronically ill his whole life. There is a lyric that goes "Bubba please don't cry.." which is what my oldest had always been called since Keaton was born, for Brother. My youngest did as well... so that song just touched my soul more than any other.. And it was Chris. Losing him is huge to the rock fans, or just music in general, & even more because I connected him to Keaton. So I think they did AMAZING covering this & honoring Chris. What an incredible tribute.

For no excusable reason, I haven't followed Atreyu since their second album, and I've always had a special place in my heart for them as they got me through the harder times of my Marine Corps journey. I can't believe how insane their musicianship has grown when this popped on my feed, and how incredibly played with such emotion! It's insane how fast 20 years have passed since The Curse, how fast the band has all grown up, and how heart breaking it is that we've lost such an icon in music with Chris Cornell how quickly his life had passed. Thank you for this, that was a wild ride.

Atreyu has been one of my favorite bands for a couple of decades now and I've had the pleasure of seeing them in concert a few times over the years with and without Alex. Most recently in Denver where Brandon was back on drums and vocals. They are perhaps one of the only bands I feel is just as strong without the original lead vocalist. I was so pleased that Brandon kept Atreyu going when Alex left, as he's such a great vocalist and entirely capable of leading this band. This cover has just solidified how incredibly talented he is and how much more Atreyu has to offer. This cover literally gave me chills and tears as he struck those iconic notes that Chris Cornell belted out in this song. What an absolutely beautiful rendition, guys. Bravo!
