17:31 since I can't add annotations this part is actually supposed to be, "So is the last of us the worst game ever made? Of course not! It's a mediocre game, with interesting ideas, and a decent story, with good characters, but that's all it is, mediocre" instead of "So is the last of us the worst game ever made? Of course not! It's a good game, with good ideas, and a good story, with good characters, but that's all it is, good." This line was actually from a far earlier draft of this video where I was actually a little less critical about the game overall. Since the initial video didn't really reflect my true feelings, a lot of it changed, but somehow I forgot to edit out that line. My apologies for any confusion that this line may cause, but since I can't edit the video, or add any annotations I'll just pin this comment. In either case thanks for watching and listening XD

@@TheCyclicGamer In fact. The Uncharted games also suffered from this but personally. What made me appreciate the series was the fun I had with them (even though I don't think they were amazing games or masterpieces neither). Uncharted 2 and 3 had amazingly fun action scenes and entertained me for a while. Uncharted 1 was also pretty fun in it's time but it had so many flaws that it didn't age well at all. Uncharted 4 has the best gameplay of the series but had terribly boring pacing. I can't remember any action scene beside the Madagascar's jeep chase. I also had fun on Uncharted 2 and 3 multiplayer mode while Uncharted 4 multiplayer was garbage. Haven't play The Lost Legacy (because I'm pretty sure it's gonna be just like Uncharted 4) so I can't say anything about it. I didn't really enjoyed Naughty Dog games for their story but now. They just concentrate on creating story driven games and they forget the most important point of a game which is "gameplay" and the worst part is that they don't even create great storylines. They create games with great characterization but the story they create never were anything to praise. And I'm pretty sure that The Last of Us Part II is just gonna turn out the same.

6 years later, this video is still 100% on point. The Last of Us is not a bad game, it never was. But thats it. Its a good game. Its not a genre defining masterpiece. It never was and it will never will be. The elements of the game are mediocre at best. The characters are good, the narrative is very good too. But the game is not the masterpiece everyone said it is. Its based on the emotional feeling people have about this game. "...But thats it. Its a good game." *"The elements of the game are mediocre at best"* No. It's a horrible game. When the basic elements that make up the game are mediocre(meaning = "Of only moderate quality; *not very good.")* then the game is trash. I've been gaming for over 20 years and The Last of Us is one of the worst games I have ever played in my entire life. It's shockingly bad considering how much praise this game gets. The story is good, the characters are well-written and acted, the graphics are amazing(I played the recent PC port) but none of that matters AT ALL when the gameplay is a tedious, boring slog with dumb and nonsensical mechanics. Resident Evil 4 did the whole shooting zombie game better, Fallout 3 & New Vegas did the whole post-apocalyptic world better, and even Saints Row 2 had far better shooting mechanics, despite it being half a decade older than TLOU. I've never played such an over-rated and poorly designed slog of a game in my entire life. Story makes no difference if the gameplay isn't good. I have no idea when people started playing video games for the story, the most important aspect of any game *should* be the gameplay. Having a good story is a plus, but it should never be the main selling point. If I don't enjoy the game for its gameplay, I'm not gonna care about the story.

You'll get a lot of hate for this (judging from the dislikes), but I agree with everything you said. My gripe with TLOU is how "meh" the gameplay is. Not great, not bad, just "meh". I'm the gameplay first kind of gamer and not much into story-driven games. And if the game is more story focused, I hope the gameplay complements the story, not hinders it. Back to the TLOU, I could just say "Screw it, not my kind of game" and avoid all the fanboys, but now we've reached a point where the influence of TLOU gameplay style is just out of hand. Look no further than the new God of War trailer... And people are praising it too. Apparently nobody cares about gameplay anymore and will accept anything different from the gameplay of the original series, no matter how worse the gameplay is in the new one...

The God of War 4 trailer was honestly the catalyst for the creation of this video. I don't think the last of us is a bad game by any means, but seeing the industry treat it as some sort of gold standard is truly disheartening from my perspective. There's so much that can be done within the realm of video games, yet developers have decided to take the easy way out by attempting to create films, as opposed to games.
@MariusUrucu8 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, it bugs me too how some devs try so hard to make their games feel like "movies", while cheapening the inherent advantage of videogames, which is interactivity. Heck, there are games that not only have a good story with a compelling narrative, but also have satisfying gameplay too. The Prince of Persia series, Bioshock series (yes, even Infinite), Darksiders 1 and 2, heck even freaking Undertale, simple as it is, are just like that. And these are only examples from the top of my head, there are so many more games like this. Regarding the new God of War, please check out "THE GOD OF WAR 4 RANT" by TheGamingBritShow (can't post any links because KZbin don't like it...). The gameplay is pretty much an interactive movie...though I wish the story was actually good...95% of it is filler with an ending that makes the whole journey pointless and a waste of time. Edit: To elaborate further just because some asshole is accusing me of having "Nothing concrete" about my statement; here is an elaboration of what I meant by stating the story is "95% filler"; this is done just so rational people would understand what I'm getting at. 1. What was the point of the character of Tess? Her introduction added nothing to the overall narrative and she died very early on in the game; even her "sacrifice" amounted to nothing considering that Joel and Ellie still had to deal with the soldiers inside the building they were at anyway; Even when Bill asks about her, Joel simply acts like it's not important and doesn't even mentions her death; as if the game is admitting that character isn't important at all. 2. The whole part with Bill and trying to get him to fix a car engine for a car was also very pointless. Because after getting the car working...it gets destroyed in the next scene and Joel and Ellie still had months before they reached their destination...I guess Neil's Drucmann's priority was letting us know that Bill was a "queer"...Yeah...cool...and? 3. Sam and his little brother could have been interesting and the game actually does a decent job with introducing them and having them working together with Joel and Ellie; but then what happens right when you're starting to warm up to them? Both of them die and the screen fades to black and they're never mentioned again. 4. When Joel and Ellie reach the part where Joel is reunited with his brother again; they could have done something good with it and they did when it was revealed that Joel didn't want Ellie in his life because she was causing him pain; but it was ruined because of how fast the situation was resolved. Just right after Joel told her that, in the next scene and for NO REASON he was "feeling bad" about it and decides to continue the journey with Ellie. You see, sure...the character "Growth" here was pretty forced and didn't come off naturally. 5. The part where Joel and Ellie get to the University where the Fireflies HQ originally was before they found out they moved to another place...It's pretty much a "Your princess is in another castle moment. 6. I am going to ignore the fact that Joel shouldn't have survived what happened to him in the previous chapter (Not without blood transfusion and someone who can fix internal bleeding wounds) and how a 14 year old like Ellie was massacring dozens of the infected and veteran hunters all by herself even though she doesn't have enough combat experience for such a feat (Heck, even with Joel I thought the game was stretching it); or Joel, still wounded was able to over power two men...Basically, I am going to ignore all of the implausible writing in this chapter, But the worst thing about this chapter was the fact that it was totally pointless and was just stretching the game's overall time...there was no payoff to it whatsoever, just Joel and Ellie getting into more trouble with the infected and hunters...even David is just like any other thug in the game trying to kill/rape Ellie, only difference is that he has a name. 7. The ending is pretty much a situation where NOTHING happens and it makes the whole journey pointless to the point that the outcome of finishing the journey is the same as it never happening at all...If Joel and Ellie DIED or sat on their asses and did nothing...then guess what...the outcome will be the same. I don't have any trouble with Joel's decision on a morale level because you CAN make a good story and ending with such characters making such decision; but the main issue here is that it made the whole game a waste of time and nothing was accomplished in the end. Some people like to use the tired "But it was about the relationship between Joel and Ellie!" excuse...but guess what, these two's relationship story have ended BEFORE the winter chapter...and Joel have already proven he loves her by saving her over and over again from the Hunters and infected, so from a writing stand-point he didn't need to prove it one more time by killing more people in the end and making the whole journey pointless. 8. What's worse for me was the fact that our protagonists didn't seem to have any emotional investment in their journey at all and it made me wonder what was the point of going through all the dangers of going through it? Joel is clearly wasn't invested emotionally in it hence why it was so easy for him to change his mind when he learned it would kill Ellie to have the vaccine extracted from her. Ellie easily believed Joel's lying to her about the truth of what happened in the Fireflies HQ without much questioning...and her mentioning Riley in the end and her "waiting her turn to die" was pretty much too late for the party at this point and had no weight behind it whatsoever. That's just the entire summary.

DarkSonic180 the world is only empty after you have explored everything most of the time if you search an area for a little bit you can find something new after fifty or so hours I found an entire village hidden in the bottom of the map. Most of the shrine puzzles suck but there are some good shrine quests that make it much more interesting and they are about a third of the shrine quests. There is a waypoint that says exactly where to go and when you are done with that and search for shrines you can find them all on your own because they are giant glowing orange rocks. For story there is quite a bit but you have to explore and talk to people to learn it.

You ask for a masterpeice? I say Bioshock. Everyone else says The Last of Us. I enjoyed the Last of Us enough, but I got a little disinfranchised when everyone started saying it was the Citizen Kane of video games. Everyone I knew was saying how mind blowing the plot twist at the end if the game was as well and saying how it was the best twist they had ever seen. I personally think Bioshock's twist was a lot more unexpected and ground shaking. The twist at the end of The Last of Us relies on heavy emotional connection, which is how so many twists work, but I think Bioshock's twist is that much better because it isn't based in emotional attachment to the character(s), but rather on your understanding of the core setup of the game. You enemy is not who you think and you've been deceived since the moment you started the game.

@@clearlywrong6520 oh I completely agree. Bioshock's gameplay was pretty innovative at the time of its release. It kept me engaged because of its gameplay. I, however, thinj the Last of Us lacks in both outstanding gameplay and story. Neither are bad by a long shot, they just aren't absolutely amazing like everyone seems to think.

@DJ Deadbeat Very much the experience I had revisiting it last summer. As Bill, that crazy friend of Joel’s, put it, there are parts in this game. Every time he did that I was like "NO, AGRO, RUN AWAY, DON'T DO THAT PLEAAAASEEE.... Oh right, this is a videogame... still... PLEASE DON'T DO THAT". I mean, Agro doesn't get killed by the Colossi, but the fact that Team Ico managed to make one worry for the pet virtual horse talks A LOT about how well they succeded on making you care about the companion AI. Kinda the same thing with Yorda in ICO. Ellie from TLOU isn't even close to get that reaction, and she has hundred of lines of expository dialogue to, supposedly, acomplish that effect. @@sucram1015 But then don't have stealth if you aren't willing to spend the time/money to have good mechanics! It's very superficial and borderline broken. No silenced weapons, stupid shivs that break (even on humans, which is bullshit), enemies that spot you from miles away and have a telepathic link, because once one person sees you, no matter if you kill him right away, everyone instantly knows where you are, there's no proper feedback on how visible you are, how much noise you make, or even why you got spotted or by who... It's goddamn broken. The problem is that while gameplay discourages stealth the story encourages it. Meaning whenever you happen upon an enemy group the characters themselves want to be unnoticed. And of course there's the stupid ai that further demolishes the experience. When you're crouching around, evading enemies, and your partner(s) just running around like fucking morons IN FRONT OF THE ENEMIES. This is the most unforgiveable thing in the game, it just ruins the experience. If you can't do stealth, don't DO stealth! This is just so in-sync with what I've been thinking, and I've scarcely found anyone pointing this stuff out. Namely with knocking down the whole "Citizen Kayne" comparison, as well as pointing to Resident Evil 4 and Dark Souls as already doing these things ten times better. I will say though that I did enjoy The Last of Us moreso than, say... Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I think that was even more on-rails and scripted than TLoU, especially considering that TLoU has much more exploration involved than Uncharted, and allows you to carry every weapon in the entire game at once... in a survival stealth game... on consoles. After being bombarded with so many dull shooters barring the player down with two-weapon slots, as we're somehow expected to feel EMPOWERED by this, The Last of Us using its weapons the way it did gave me quite a sense of satisfaction. But this game is not worth 300+ awards. That's absurd. I also really, REALLY love your concept of taking a key from a human settlement over to an infected "hive" within the same chapter/map. I understand your rationale and appreciate people like you who challenge their viewers every once in a while. Really made me take a retrospective look on TLOU's single-player. I just wanted to comment that TLOU provided, no joke, one of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever had. For what it may lack in thematic integration and gameplay in the single-player, I felt it more than made up for in the multiplayer. Characters? You focus on the more common population this time, with the player characters' voice lines and interactions giving them personality and believability, and even encouraging teamwork and relaying information with lines like "Glad you're covering my ass," or "Look out, he's got a shotgun!". The premise alone does plenty of worldbuilding, as it shows the daily struggle of Hunters and Fireflies and communicates their feelings based on how you play. The option of special executions, in addition to rewarding more parts, shows us the brutality that these people show each other during hard times if it means they will benefit, THROUGH MECHANICS. Survival themes? Crafting truly matters because of what perks you have equipped and what item(s) you need for a specific situation, and taking out your backpack to craft in a firefight has risks because enemy players do not have an inept AI for you to exploit. Every death has consequence, as it directly interferes with your squad's objective (survival/protecting a safe), and losing means a low reward of supplies. Each team only has four players, and just having one more teammate than the enemy in a firefight can be a significant advantage. The slow, cat-and-mouse pace of the game makes it feel like a game of not just precise aiming and twitch reflexes, but also decisive tactics, appropriate to the survival theme. Progression? The multiplayer encourages you to learn and improve with its supplies metagame, as earning more will unlock new perks and weapons to use, as well as loadout points to expand your kit. Some may argue that this would make it unfair for new players, but I think this is a good compromise. Newbies feel like they have a goal to work towards, and while perks and purchasable weapons are extremely helpful, they are balanced by the fact that more powerful options cost more loadout points, and with a maximum of 13 loadout points, no one can be insanely overpowered. You can be a jack-of-all-trades or specialize your role using perks suited to your playstyle(s). Ultimately, however, teamwork and smart tactics are the deciding factors in a game. Strategy? Again, you are competing against other humans rather than the underdeveloped AI, forcing you to keep on your toes and think of ways to keep your enemies guessing. Use a sniper rifle? Enemies will likely mark your position, stay behind cover, and flank you. Shiv of bunch of enemies? They will become paranoid and likely check corners and their backs more often. Set nail bomb traps? It's safe to say that after dying a few times to them, enemies will wise up and use listen mode to check for bombs in doorways and corners, and in some cases, even use them against you by shooting them when you walk over your own trap. The TLOU multiplayer, I believe, delivers a superior experience in using the medium's strengths of interactive mechanics to tell a story and guide you towards an overall objective while granting enough freedom to let you go about it in your own way and blending in enough personality to give itself a unique identity in the market.

The origin of video games is in gameplay not story. The obsession over story in the last decade is also why video games are trash now. I like a good story in a game but when you think of the best games in history, most of them have little or no story at all. Zelda BOTW for example. Little story, amazing gameplay. Mario. Sonic 2. Doom. GTA III. TLOU ruined Sony. They make all their exclusives this formula now and it's why we all are tired of it. Story games where you sometimes have QTE and after 30 hours of holding the controller, feel no better about what you experienced and can't remember most of it.

I really don't get why people think this story is so exceptional. We've seen hundreds of survival dramas in a zombie apocalypse or bonding stories about parental figures, and there doesn't seem to be anything narratively unique to it. When people talk about this game's best attributes, they talk about the music, the graphics, the cutscenes, but when someone comes back to the gameplay, they don't even hesitate to call it the weakest part. I'm sorry, but if a game's greatest quality is being devoid of needing good gameplay, then perhaps that's a failure on a fundamental level of storytelling.

But the gameplay was so ordinary. If it was not for the story the game would not have a leg to stand on, the gameplay was boring, a shame considering it should be the most important part of a game. I see a lot of ps4 vs xbox videos and i always comes down to exclusives, with ps4 fans talking about TLOU as if it's a selling point. It's not. You described my experience with this game to perfection. My friends regard this game as the best game ever made and I indulged myself to play it. I just beat it recently just to come out very dissatisfied. The story is derivative and so been there done that. I've seen this type of story done before and way more effectively. The environments are boringly similar which even Uncharted had better and more memorable setpieces. The enemy variety is painfully lacking to the point that the final boss of the game are two bloaters alongside a mob which is embarrassing when you already have much older games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill which have get this, VARIETY in terms of enemy design and boss battles. Hell even Dead Space which came before TLoU is a much better horror experience and it has a silent protagonist. The point is to me TLoU felt like a stripped down version of Resident Evil, it has no enemy, boss and environmental variety, the story is pretentious and the characters are as interesting as a potato, it has the most insultingly basic puzzles I've seen. There is nothing wrong with liking games that pretend to be movies but I don't like people telling me this is the best one the genre has to offer. If people want to hear my recommendation in movie-like games I would choose Metal Gear Solid 4. It has a lovable cast, awesome bosses, engaging story, unique setpieces and an unforgettable soundtrack. And it came out BEFORE TLoU during the early PS3 lifecycle.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. I thought the game was good, but little more. The largest point of contention I have with this game (and many other games), is their desire to be film. I know many among us creative are deeply inspired by film, and they both use screens, but they're obviously very, very different media. To emulate film doesn't maximize the medium, I liken it to drawing a photorealistic rendering. It does showcase skill, but you can do so much more with a pen and pencil than recreate the physical world around you.

This might be buried by this point, but oh well. My main problem with this game is actually something I don't think a lot of people would think of, really. Anyone here play Spec Ops: The Line? (spoiler alert if you haven't played that game) Remember how Walker and his squad killed all those people just to accomplish their "mission", and at the end Walker gets exposed for the massive piece of shit he was all along? To me The Last of Us was like that, but unlike Spec Ops it didn't have the self-awareness to have nearly any character call him out for killing so many goddamn people just out of the "love" of protecting one person. I seriously think that the story would have been the masterpiece most people say it is if it focused on the ideas of, "How many bad things would you do to protect one person, and at the end would it REALLY be worth all the damage? When does acting out of survival go too far?" In some regards, I think TLOU played it too safe for what it tried to be. And for the record, I don't dislike the game. It's a 9/10 in my book, but I just think there's games with better stories and gameplay than this one.

Amen brother! I find it so frustrating, that people celebrate this game like they do. It's... ok. It's an ok survival-stealth game, and a fairly good story. But the story would have benefited from being told in the media of MOVIE (although, then people might realize that the story is fairly derivative), and the gameplay gets bogged down by the story aspect (e.g. the ally-AI, during sneaking sections, as you say). It's just obvious, that the ally characters are not part of the game, the way they are just invisible to the enemies. And if they are not part of the game, why are they even there? Well... because they are essential to the movie that keeps getting told in between the gameplay section. And for that, we sacrifice the immersion of the gameplay... in our VIDEOGAME. This game is less than the sum of its parts, because its parts pull each other down. It's a 6/10. Maybe a 7/10. Not more. And time won't be kind with this one, because as soon as the graphics and presentation have become outdated, this game won't turn any heads. If you want to tell a story about a relationship between two characters, and your gameplay only works if you make the world (like the AI) ignore the presence of one of these characters, why tell this story as a game?

It was a simple premise, but the setting, and the way the gameplay flows made for a compelling play through (on your first play i suppose and apart from the weak boss fight at the end) Also, for its time, asylum was amazing until so many other games borrowed elements of its gameplay since then.

First off, my PS3 died trying to play the Last of Us for the first time, so I may be bitter about that. Other than that, I felt it was pretty okay. Better than Uncharted 3, but not by much. I know the plot has to happen somehow, but I was annoyed that Joel and Tess didn't just give up on their guns, shoot Marlene, and be on their way. I mean, she's already injured, and making demands of us when she doesn't really have the cards to do so. Plus, we just killed as business partner. Another thing I'm not particularly fond of is the game sections ending with big moments with character development and reactions to those moments happening off screen. We don't see the fallout to Ellie losing a friend and his brother, we don't see Joel bury those feelings because he's too cold to open up and heal, and we don't see how Ellie and Joel got as close as they did by the time Fall comes around. Bringing up the brothers, Tess, or Joel's daughter are the only times he acts cold to Ellie from that point until she runs away. I'll be honest, I don't quite remember how they separate in fall. I think he's pretty friendly, but still sees her as a job I'll also say, Ellie's character is pretty bipolar to what she sees (maybe it's true to people, I don't know, I'm not good with them). Most of the time she's a fowl mouthed teen who wants to kill people, and she's lived through enough of the zombie apocalypse to know what happens. And then she's a completely innocent kid, scared of violence, and bright eyed. She keeps asking for that gun to help us out, and then her first kill happens and she realises the weight of the situation (pretty great scene, actually), but 5 or so minutes later, there's a rifle lying around and she's okay with killing people. I don't think I had too much problems with Winter or Spring. The hospital shootout was okay, the ending is alright. Bill was the shit. Shootouts happened far too often for a world starving for bullets. A lot of the time it felt like a goddamn it moment. Nitpicky because I know a lot could change in 20 years, but it's weird how the Fireflies started this, but then they were the ones trying to end it. I'll also say I'm a little jaded because I seen the brothers dying the moment they were introduced and were completely normal. They were gonna try tug at our hearts, and I wouldn't let it happen.

One of my favorite parts of this game was something Resident Evil never remembered: Durability for melee weapons.

Minecraft is a better survival game than Last of Us.

I played the last of us remastered today for the first time. I was so hyped, because people called it one of the best games ever bla bla bla. I'm immensely disappointed. This is easily one of the most frustrating, poorly designed games I have ever played. I normally love games like this and I went in the game with the expectation that I'm gonna love this one too. But nah.

Unpopular opinion my favorite game from Naughty Dog isn't The Last Of Us or Uncharted franchise is Crash Bandicoot that game was a real GOAT i remeber playing it on PS1 when i was 4 year's old.

07:40 is my first main gripe with the story, it just feels really generic. There is not a single thing in this games story that feels original and when every review is praising this aspect of the game I was just left feeling really disappointed by it add to that the game play is not very good and I cannot for the life of me workout what it is that makes people praise it so much.

Name one movie, show or game that has the same story and portrays the characters as well as this game. I hate seeing people call it "generic" and then talk about how games like Days Gone and Resident Evil are way better. This is the only zombie story ive seen that is unique (fungal infection) and feels like it could actually happen. But people like hating on things because its popular

kinganarkzie it’s unorginal, but still very well done and emotional, and the emotional aspect is uplifted by the in game interactions. It left an impact on me after I finished, and I think that’s a big reason why people praised it along with it being one of the first games to pull this type of story off very effectively. It is overrated but there’s a reason why.

Know 1 the last of us is more of a 7/10 for me. A good and very enjoyable game, but it’s still not the funnest game I’ve ever played.

Know 1 that’s because in my opinion it’s heavily overrated as a game, and I like it. Sheep mentality is a big reason why.

@@BrendanBraica agreed. Tlou is very original especially with the fungal infection rather than the OmG ZomBiE VirUs with not explanation. Not only that but the zombies are so cool, your have four stages of being infection and the clickers were very original

If I want a good story I'll watch a movie. I hate that games have become interactive movies.
@isaywhateveriwantandyougot74212 жыл бұрын
"Interactive movies" is not even the right combination of words because they are directly contradictory of each other. I love movies, but that's because they know what they are instead of pretentiously trying to imitate another medium.

My video game masterpieces list are Ninja Gaiden (xbox) Soul Calibur (Dreamcast) Grandia 2 (Dreamcast) Sonic Unleashed (PS3) There are many others, but off the top of my head, these no doubt are some of the games I personally have had the most fun playing ever.

Soul Calibur on dreamcast in some way look better than some of the later titles. That art is excellent.
