This video is very powerful. I also love Adam's energy, and compasionate speech. You give us hope. I would also add one comment I have in my mind. Sometimes I have seen that comfort, or better said complacency has to do with the low energy to overcome mental challenges before they become illness. When we add hope, or a goal, or a new project in our lives, no matter the area as long as we take full ownership, it will impact other areas, and will boost our own self esteem. The more challenging, the better. Thank you Adam for all your insights.

I was with a woman with disorganized attachment. That was a very painful experience. She told me that no one ever treated her or her daughter so well. I was good to her and loved her. I can’t understand why she kept pushing me away and was hung up on the “narcissistic” guy before me. It’s like the better I was to her the worse I got treated. It’s like she just wanted a toxic guy

This is unfortunately how disorganized style often works until it is resolved, usually with the help of a professional. The urge to sabotage is just so strong.

Why were you with a woman with disorganized attachment? my question actually is did you realize or notice this before you got involved? Unlike Adam I don't think it's the urge to sabotage, I think its 2 things...the fact she told you no one ever treated her (and her daughter) so well, actually makes them uncomfortable because it's not what they recognize as a healthy / good relationship. And you can't Love / care about someone more than they do themselves. Because at the end of the day they don't believe they deserve it.

Just came off a women’s weekend Catholic retreat. I was hacking it with Adam’s teaching as I went through it: how they got us to bond with problem solving, sharing, lots of snacks, rituals, music, appeals to emotion, assurance. It was fascinating to witness and experience it in a distilled encounter.

The connection between attachment styles and mental health makes so much sense. The beginnings of our family lives and the way we interacted with them, being related to how we learned to think and feel, is so interesting , too, and the hope of better relationships brings incouragement, knowing that a person doesn't have to be stuck, without solutions.

I agree with you. Fixing my attachment helped fix my anxiety disorder. I’m no where near as anxious as I used to be when I started the work with you. This did take hard changes and boundaries with people I care about, but who were unhealthy for me. I feel like in order for the attachment work to be effective, someone has to admit they have the ability to fix their issues. It’s not easy, especially at first. But it’s definitely worth it! 🙌

This one was great. Listened several times. Question: with this attachment style we inherently get in our own way by not being able to find how we feel or trust help. Any tips on identifying values? I don’t really know how to trust that I can identify my values when I know Im vigilantly looking for a way to protect myself.

Hey Barbara, I definitely understand that process. Take all the time you need. And I'm glad you found this video valuable - As to your question, it is very hard indeed to start thinking about values when we are in survival mode. This goes back to Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs (if you're familiar) and keeps us stuck at level 2. The answer for more avoidant folks is often to build the framework under which you could trust someone enough to relax in their presence, and then to filter your people in your life for that criteria first. That decreases the unsafe feeling enough that you can stop just surviving and gain the luxury of thinking longer term about principles and goals.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🚨 The prevalence of insecure attachment styles in children is now at an alarming rate of 50%. 00:14 🧠 A potential link exists between the high percentage of diagnosed mental illness in Americans and attachment styles. 00:27 🔗 The connection between attachment styles and mental health issues is significant yet often overlooked. 00:42 🎓 Adam Lane Smith introduces himself as a seasoned professional in psychology and attachment issues. 00:57 🤝 Attachment styles are crucial in shaping personal relationships and mental well-being. 01:12 💌 The audience's concern for mental health, especially among women caring for others, is acknowledged. 01:26 📹 The purpose of the video is to educate on the impacts of attachment on mental health, targeting a female audience. 01:53 🌟 Smith aims to reveal the "harsh truth" about mental health and attachment styles. 02:07 👶 Attachment is defined as the early bonds formed with caregivers, affecting future emotional connections. 02:36 💔 The discussion on how a lack of secure attachment can lead to feelings of unworthiness and codependency. 03:03 🛑 The concept of avoidant attachment style is explored, emphasizing a lack of trust in others. 03:17 🔄 The anxious-avoidant (disorganized) attachment style is characterized by inconsistency in relationships. 03:44 🧬 Smith explains how attachment issues can alter the balance of key brain chemicals. 04:11 🧪 The link between attachment styles and the production of neurotransmitters like GABA and melatonin is discussed. 04:39 🤝 Vasopressin's role in problem-solving within relationships is tied to attachment security. 04:52 ☀️ Serotonin is associated with long-term emotional stability, affected by both individual behavior and relationships. 05:20 🍫 Dopamine's short-term rewards are contrasted with the long-term issues caused by attachment problems. 06:03 😔 The psychological struggles associated with insecure attachment are emphasized. 06:58 🗣️ The impact of attachment styles on self-doubt and the reliability of oneself and others is highlighted. 07:13 😨 Performance anxiety and social anxiety are connected to attachment issues and the pursuit of safety. 07:41 🏥 Mental health diagnoses are proposed to have a connection with attachment problems. 08:24 💡 Smith shares insights from his experience in psychotherapy related to attachment and mental health. 08:36 😟 Generalized anxiety disorder is suggested to resemble the effects of poor attachment. 09:18 📈 The potential cause of teenage and adult depression is linked to attachment issues. 10:11 🚨 The speaker suggests that the prevalence of severe depression among teenagers is not normal and may indicate broader societal issues. 10:39 🔗 Discusses the link between attachment, PTSD, and the brain's search for safety following trauma. 11:08 🧠 Explains the conflict between the emotional and logical brain during PTSD and the struggle for sufferers to find safety and understanding. 12:04 💔 Suggests that attachment issues may not cause PTSD but can significantly increase the risk of its development. 12:33 😨 Describes panic attacks as an overreaction of the system already stressed by constant fear, implying that attachment issues could be a contributing factor. 13:00 🔄 Posits that resolving attachment issues may help alleviate anxiety and panic disorders. 13:14 💊 Challenges the notion that bipolar disorder is solely a chemical issue, suggesting that attachment and behavioral issues may play a significant role. 14:22 👪 Highlights a case where family therapy, addressing attachment and behavior issues, led to the remission of bipolar symptoms. 15:05 🔁 Offers a theory that bipolar episodes could be a brain's response to extreme stress by temporarily altering brain chemistry. 16:16 🧩 Suggests that improving family dynamics and attachment can lead to a significant decrease in manic episodes. 16:44 🤝 Shares a study where schizophrenia symptoms were mitigated through family therapy without medication, hinting at the power of addressing attachment issues. 17:37 🌀 Connects personality disorders directly with attachment issues, proposing that these are extreme manifestations of attachment problems. 18:20 🎓 Critiques the medical and psychological education systems for underemphasizing the importance of attachment theory in adult mental health. 19:02 🔄 Argues that mental health issues and attachment issues are intertwined, advocating for a stronger focus on attachment in treatment. 19:31 🔍 Emphasizes the significance of attachment in how we learn to connect with others and how its disruption can lead to various mental health issues. 19:59 📘 The author's book "Slaying Your Fear" is introduced as a tool for understanding underlying issues related to mental health diagnoses. 20:28 🧭 Core values and authenticity in oneself and relationships are presented as the process to fix attachment issues. 20:58 💞 The significance of secure, stable, and loving relationships in addressing attachment issues is emphasized. 21:26 ⏳ It is highlighted that it's never too late to work on attachment issues, with an example of a 79-year-old woman who successfully worked through hers. 22:19 🌱 The potential for healing within families and creating a positive legacy through working on attachment is noted. 22:33 🧠 The role of attachment in enhancing brain chemicals related to connection and bonding is discussed. 23:15 💁‍♀️ The unique role of feminine energy in nurturing and healing through attachment is highlighted. 24:00 🤝 A story of a client illustrates the power of feminine energy in improving a depressive brother's mental state through connection and nurturing. 24:55 🗣️ Secure attachment interactions and open communication about needs and expectations are key to healthy relationships. 25:22 🚀 The attachment boot camp video course is offered as a resource for building authentic relationships with oneself and others. 26:04 🌟 The potential for not just fixing but enhancing attachment in relationships is stressed as a means for greater fulfillment. 26:32 💡 The video ends with an encouragement to believe in the power of love and authentic connection as the best 'psych medicine'. 26:46 🌍 A call to action is made for the viewer to use their feminine energy to heal and bring positive change in the world.

What is your advice for interacting with people diagnosed as Bipolar, but who consistently stonewall and promise things they don’t deliver? The only resolution I’ve found is massive boundaries. I have not been able to communicate effectively otherwise. Prior to doing this, I tried to no avail to communicate with them. And my anxiety spiked as a result. It was unhealthy for me and for them. They supposedly go to some level of therapy, but I think it’s more for managing symptoms rather than fixing trauma or attachment??
@AttachmentAdam

Keep in mind that while we should be considerate and compassionate of others, we cannot let someone's diagnosis override our life or be a reason for constantly violating out boundaries in a way that makes us feel unsafe. You are within your rights to draw lines with what you are capable of tolerating. And encouraging them to do their own work to resolve some of their behavioral issues specifically, that is OK.

The issue I have with your "attachment style" label is especially in todays environment it allows for "victim" mentality and it can't be addressed singularly. Which I think is where it really needs to happen. I do believe you are correct in your assessment of parental relationships effecting people / kids even to the point of what many would consider mental issues. But I think it def depends on an individuals interpretation as well, that's why children growing up in the same household have different experiences. We all grow-up with a personal "Stockholm Syndrome". This is how we identify "love" / security. I think what needs to happen more is personal responsibility and more individual strength of character. I think we are now in a sense too attached, or see that as a necessity, which then compromises our truth. I think fostering and nurturing, or being able to be okay with a sense of detachment is more important. Because then you can look at the things that are creating issues personally, in family, relationships, societally and address them without attachment to them or feeling of obligation.
