I also appreciated you introducing the concept of mixing and matching pad aggressiveness with product aggressiveness. Great video and great tutorial. New cars can be as bad as trade-ins. When I detailed in the dealership we would get dealer trades in that were absolutely mauled. I spent a lot of hours buffing and polishing on those cars to make them look like a new car is suppose to look. That charger turned out fantastic.

this is excellent content, thank you. this is the big difference between home enthusiasts and pros. both wash a lot of cars a lot of times. however, a home enthusiast corrects paint once, maybe twice a year. pros cut paint every week, many every day, and paint correction know-how is empirically gained. you have to do it, a lot. one can only learn by correcting a lot of paint. videos like this, with continuity, are the best information for the home enthusiast. everything else, they do on their car frequently and have lots of practice doing it (I mean, how, many 2-bucket instruction washes does one need?); but cutting paint is only done occasionally at home (unless they have a fleet). one bottle of compound would last a lifetime for a home enthusiast. you have more pads than most detailing stores. video is great. more, please.

Great video! A lot of info! Car turned out great! I have been using TW , Sonax Cut and Finish, and 3D One for one steps mostly. Since they all work forever I do what I call a step and a half. I leave they polish on after using a fiber pad and go over the area with a white pad. Usually works well.

Appreciate the walk through of your arsenal and explanations, it's amazing how versatile professional detailers need to be at this level of detail, I don't remember this when I worked in a detail shop 20 years ago. I just did a driveway paint enhancement on my GM weekend driver with Hyper Polish, ONR to wet wipe, 21mm DA and Lake Country orange waffle pro pads; turned out great, I love using Hyper Polish and wet wiping the residue, so user friendly for an amateur like me and it still did some nice correction with the light cutting pad. I have Sonax Cutmax (I think?) and LC purple wooled foam pads for more aggressive spot correction, and I have a couple LC black microfiber polishing pads if needed. If I had any more I'd probably just confuse myself, forget what I did the last time I polished!

I didn't realize how pad dependent that TW one and done is. It did a fantastic job smoothing out and glossing my paint but I didn't have a strong enough pad to actually correct. I learned my lesson. I tried a black and then orange Lake country pad but they weren't enough. I learned the hard way to buy a few different pads because you really don't know how the paint is going to react. I tried that and Perfect Finish. Neither one corrected with an orange pad.

The Rupes Yellow and Blue bottles surprised me a lot. Those 2 will handle a lot of different situations. They change a lot with different pads which is awesome. Or Sonax cut max and Perfect Finish as well. I really want to try Papa cut and Fab finishing polish.

On medium and hard paints I like to use meguiar's M110 & M210, good cut and finish and almost no dust. I also like on really really hard paints, finish with M205. On softer paints meguiar's ultimate compound and ultimate polish do an excellent job. But it's still good to work with a ptg to get an idea of ​​the thickness of the paint or clear coat.

Excellent tutorial. Apparently your first test area provides important feedback. I’ve never done any of this before. Someone keyed my car and I took it to a detailer to get the paint corrected and he cleaned it, clayed, and waxed it and told me he could diminish the scratch by 50 percent and it required 5 minutes of wet sanding to reduce edges of a long very narrow scratch. He didn’t really improve the look of the scratch whatsoever - although the rest of the car did look very good (2016 Camry celestial silver). I paid him but I’m positive he didn’t wet sand anything and just tried to fill scratch with touch up paint. I wished I hadn’t paid him but I live alone and wanted my car back. Since then, I’ve watched just about every video there is and purchased about 400.00 to 500.00 in supplies myself because I don’t know of anyone in my area that has the paint correction knowledge to do it right-so begrudgingly, I’m going to do it myself in the spring. BTW, do you know of a reputable detailer near the Albany NY area that isn’t afraid to try to wet sand and correct a scratch?? I find most people just want to clean it, clay it, and do a quick polish and final coat. Anyhow, thanks for the informative videos and I liked your comment about you not letting your ego get in the way and the comment about managing expectations-good things to not only use in car detailing but in life in general.

Subaru has soft paint so avoid h901 unless its hammered but expect to make it a 2 step if you do. Try F601 or M302 and a yellow or orange foam pad but you may need to finish down with a white foam pad if your pad leaves ghosting.

What is the most agressive pad you know of or have used? And what's the most agressive compound/pad combo you've used? Thank you! Got to agree with you about the Precision Platelet. I removed a lot of defects from a 15 year old Audi 7-seater with Lake Country orange CCS pads and Lake Country white CCS pads. The gloss was unreal and I really didn't want to dullen it with sealant or wax. Thankfully the P&S Beadmaker just made it pop even more! Keep up the amazing work Chelsea. Most aggressive pad wss probably the Rupes Coarse Wool Pads and most aggressive compound would be ACA500 but I haven't used that much. D300, Jescar Correcting Compound, The Last Cut and Koch Chemie H901 would all be very similar in correction that I've used

Great video Chelsea. We just picked up a new Honda Civic in Crystal Black Pearl. Soft Paint. I've polished the hood and trunk to take out bird bomb etching with a LC Flat Orange pad using 3D Speed. So far it's finished out good. Before coating I'm going to try a white and black pad to see which one finishes out with 3D One better. I picked Gyeon Mohs for the coating. Have you used that and do you like it?

Hey Chelsea, great video! Thank you for explaining that all for us. One thing I heard you mention throughout the video was when a compound/polish “finishes down well”. Can you explain what we should feeling and observation we should have when a compound or polish finishes down well and also when it doesn’t finish down well? Is it simply, if no hazing or micro-marring occurs after then it has finished down well? Or are you referring to the compound/polish physically diminishes and breaks down during the polishing? Is there a point where you can feel the machine polisher feels different on the paint and that’s when we can know that it’s starting to diminish out? Thank a bunch Chelsea!

You won’t feel a significant difference with your machine (although if you’ve worked the product down too far you will feel it starting to be gummy and it will look gummy as well) but to finish down well I am referring to its ability to show clarity on the paint. If it has no micromarring or ghosting or haze it finishes down well but if it requires a second step to remove those things then it’s not finished down well and needs an actual finishing polish.

All single stage is going to vary in my approach based on condition as most are older and the ones IVE seen have crows feet or delamination going on so I normally take a sensitive approach to them and use something like Sonax Perfect Finish. But for modern single stage paints I normally use a Meguiars Cleaner Wax as they normally need polishing more than heavy correction. But I dont see single stage too frequently, only a handful of time and they had crows feet which required a special approach because too much polishing will fill the cracks with polish residue.

Great content! Thanks. Just getting into paint enhancement/correction and this really helps. One question - can you mix brands of pads during the same correction, as long as they are the same color density (for example, I have 3-4 orange CG Hex Logic pads but find I need another pad during the correction, can I use an orange Lake Country instead of stopping and cleaning my CG pads)? Full disclosure - I only do this as a DIY'er on my own cars. Not a professional by any means.

I've got pads from Lake Country, Meguiars, SPTA, Autobrite Direct, Rupes and more. I often do exactly what you describe. However, when you do switch brand just ensure beforehand that the pad hardness is like-for-like and you do a small test spot before committing to correcting a whole panel. Just because they seem to be the same density and firmness doesn't always translate as such on a panel.

Yes just know some pad density may vary slightly so one brands orange may be more aggressive than anothers. You can also wash them on the fly or use a pad washer if you don't want to buy more pads.

Hey Chels, a very cool vid, learned a lot, I've got a question though, gonna do a polish on my mom's Toyota CHR 2019, I've heard it's soft paint (read on various forums, asked around generally), the hood is kinda worn as my mom always brushes the snow with a cheap brush, have sonax perfect finish and ultimate cut (along with cutting and finishing pads) you think it's a good combo? Cheers :) ah and I've got a 9mm throw polisher (I know it's not a big throw but it's what I've got :)

I’d start with SPF and a white or orange foam pad, work up to a yellow pad and if that doesn’t do it then bump up to a medium polish like diy detail Gold Standard and their gold waffle pad. That may be all you need. Id use ultimate cut as a last resort if those don’t do the trick but you will probably have to do a 2 step if you do need that to finish down properly with SPF and either the white or orange foam pad. Work your way up from soft to hard in product and pad and if you have to go that extreme on soft paint you’ll have to work your way back down. But be mindful every step removes clear coat so if you can use a paint thickness gauge first to determine how much paint you have to work with. Personally I’d try the gold standard and yellow foam Pad and more than likely that will correct and finish down in one step on a 2019 Toyota vs having to do multiple steps with multiple products to see what works. I’ve been impressed with how those products work well on most paints and scenarios I encounter.

In my experience, Tesla paint is soft so I would do something more like a Sonax perfect finish, Koch Chemie F601 or M302 or Optimum Hyper Polish and a white or orange foam pad at least for your final step. If you need more correction, whatever you choose to correct might cause micro marring so you might have to do a two-step and finish down with one of the finishing polishes I listed above and a white foam pad

Hi, i have a Renault Megane RS in Flame Red. Its a 2 stage paint and they use a tinted clear coat, Its super glossy already. I bought some products few year for detailing my last car but never did. I have 6 rupes yellow foam pads, 6 rupes white foam pads. Uro 50/50 microfibre pads white & yellow again 6 in total. Also i have a good DA. My pads are like 5 or 6 inch pads. I have HD speed, meguiars ultimate polish, G6 cutting compound, poorboys EX-p Sealant, claybar, tar remover and fallout remover and everything for prep except maybe a wash thats specfic for removing polishes but i do have a foam wash i use for my 2 bucket method.. I was going to go over car with isopropyl alcohol as a panel wipe and hope that gets anything off thats left on. My paint looks great but has very light marks. I was looking at buying Micro Cut M3.02 and just going straight for a white foam pad and doing like 4-5 passes on each panel? Would this do some correction and leave me with a nice finish and keep my clear coat intact enough to last as a daily driver? I just dont know if my current products are good enough or i should get this finishing polish. The car is in amazing shape but there is light marks, not swirls per say just marks you can see in sunlight here and there. I want some light correction while maintaining gloss and not hammering the clear... do you recommend Micro Cut M3.02 as iv seen your other video where you prefer it to Sonex PF?? Thanks

@@attention2detailswchelsea hoping i dont have to buy some orange pads. I spend over 500 on pads alone im pretty sure. I think these rupes pads for the 6inch DA where like 15 each and i bought 6 white and 6 yellow. One for each panel! Then i bought alot of microfibre pads etc. Hoping white or yellow will be enough. if i have any issues maybe ill have to get orange

Hey Chelsea , when you said even a yellow pad left soft haze so you called the customer to get the ok for a 2 step , what if they had said no would you leave it like that? Or just needed the okay for the upcharge

Just needed the okay for the upcharge but I would have finished out that panel to no haze and then figured out another product that would be a 1 step that wouldn’t have corrected as much but avoided the haze but fortunately they were okay with it and understood

I think Optimum has more correctability and performs better imo but the spray polish isnt bad. I just prefer OHP

hi would you answer some questions? i am wondering if i have a normal paint defects that i could do with a one step. but there are 2 or 3 deep scratches that i can feel with my finger nail(not throguth the clear coat tho) and i dont want to coumpound or sand that until there is almost no clear coat left around, but i still want to get rid of that scratch, do i just have to sand the heck out of it anyway bcs its the only way or can i fill it up with new clear coat after smoothing it up or is there something else?

If it’s not through the clear you can blend it with polishing and normally sanding shouldn’t be required for that. You could try on the deep scratches the 5-5-5 method from DIY Detail with their purple wool pad and gold standard polish for the deep scratches and then the rest of the vehicle use their gold waffle pad and do a quality one step

I drive an Alfa Romeo with the soft red non metallic paint with some medium to severe swirls gonna try sonax perfect finish with a medium pad as a one step hope i get away with it , do you have any experience with Alfa's soft paint?

That’s a good place to start but you could also try DIY Detail gold standard with their waffle pad

Hyundai normally is on the hard side but your test spot should help you determine that. Some have been VERY hard for me

Do you ever use or know of any dark color polishes? Everything seems to just be in white. I have a dark grey Subaru that has some deeper scratches. After polishing, the deeper scratches appear more obvious and I think the polish is depositing in the scratch and making them more obvious. Thanks!

@@indiggioman I did once and wasn't a fan of it but apparently my technique wasn't accurate according to what people said because you need a damp towel to remove it and apparently that's why my experience was not pleasant but I threw it out after I used it so I can't retest that theory

Try meguiars 110 followed by 210. Maybe start with a blue or yellow pad as Honda paint is typically soft and corrects rather easily but can mar or haze if compounded too aggressively so may need to make it a 2 step

Most Jeep paint I’ve worked on is soft and finicky. Aggressive correction will require additional steps to finish down without marring. I enjoy optimum hyper finish and a white or orange pad to finish with.

How did you ever accrue all of them pads? I've got about 150 and thought that was overkill. You must have thousands of £££s worth!

I maintain them well and some Ive had for years but I frequently buy one or two a month to upgrade my older pads. Some do need to be replaced though
