I recently did our McKees 37 giveaway and one of the requirements to enter was to share what your biggest fear is when it comes to detailing and the resounding answer that many of you gave was that when it comes to paint correction you are intimidated or too afraid to know where to start and so -THIS VIDEO IS FOR YOU!!
While this isn't going to be a complete guide, hopefully these tips, advice and recommendations I give can get you from staring at your screen to getting behind the polisher and taking those first steps to enter the world of paint correction. Fantastic video, thank you. I am a part-time, detailer and hobbyist. I only go for paint enhancements. I have a G9 which I've gotten much more comfortable using, but I wish I had just jump straight to the G15. I find I often run my G9 at speeds 5 or 6 unless the panel is really flat. I apply very little downward pressure so I know it isn't that. Brian Spitler often encourages beginners to go out and get practice panels. In one video he encouraged everyone to intentionally burn through paint so that you knew what it felt like, what it looked like and experience for yourself exactly how long it takes to burn paint with various pads and polishes and compounds. Thank you for making this video and for providing links to so many of your resources.

And thanks for the tool recommendations, especially the chair, lights and polishers. It’s nice to know there are more budget friendly options instead of $500+ on a detailing chair. Hondas have soft paint so should correct easily but if the paint is severely scratched I would step up the pad to the blue or yellow foam pads. Microfiber will definitely marr and you'll have to do a second step so you have to ask are you going to get paint perfection and need to do a two-step to finish done well enough or go for more 50 to 75% correction with a foam pad and be able to finish in one step. Plus how much clear are you removing with microfiber vs foam and is it worth having issues in the future if you polish aggressively now (when most of your UV protection is already gone from your clear as the vehicle is 7 years old) and remove even more clear+UV protection? Although it is quite possible that the fast correcting cream is actually too aggressive and creating micro marring in and of itself because it is pretty abrasive. I would probably recommend something more like a 3D one or Correcting Cream with a dark purple polishing pad as Hondas should correct quite easily (unless its a respray) but if you over correct you're going to either have a haze or micro marring left behind and have to do a second step to finish down. Hard to say without seeing the vehicle

@@attention2detailswchelsea I thought the rupes yellow pad was a polishing pad not a cutting pad? I always thought the rupes yellow was less abrasive then the orange medium cutting pads.

No the orange pad is actually a light polish pad. Normally it goes white, orange, yellow, then blue from least to more aggressive. The RUPES yellow is a polishing pad but can correct more than a orange pad.

Hey chelsea for just starting out on my 16 gmc sierra black with some swirls, do you think I could pry just use the orange foam Lc or rupes yellow and get away with that for a decent turn out without stepping up to the wool or microfiber 50/50 pads? Im going to get 3 or 4 polishes n compounds to do a test area. Im just trying to research before I get everything I need. Im also using a Griots Garage 21mm DA. Thanks for the help and love your videos!!

@@johnlanore599 GM paint can sometimes be difficult to work with. You could use a yellow foam pad or orange foam pad to get decent correction as they tend to be soft but what might happen is that it can leave behind a haze on the paint so you might actually have to follow up with a second step and a white foam pad with a finishing polish. The other thing to consider is sometimes the larger the throw of the Polisher the more micro marring that can occur. So if you have an 8 mm or a smaller throw polisher that might give you a better finish than a 21 mm throw. I have polished with a 21 mm throw before on GM paint and it does decent correction quickly but it can leave good bit of haze that you have to finish up with a white foam pad and finishing polish. I find Optimum Hyper Polish works well as a final step for GM paint to finish down without a haze.

@@attention2detailswchelsea Ok thanks for the info Chelsea, I remember you and other people saying that about gm paint. I am going to get 5 white Lc 5 orange and 5 white and 5 yellow rupes and some optimum hyper polish aswell. I may get a smaller throw gg da aswell. I got the 21mm as a present from a buddy im detailing boats with and learning how to use it. I want to do a good job and ceramic coat the truck when im done and dont mind takeing my time on it since its mine. It will be the first vehicle im doing so im just trying to get as much info and quality materials ill need to get the job done. I appreciate you taking your time to answer me back. Thankyou. Also I made a list of compounds you said worked good on soft gm paint but have you found any other good products lately for black gm paint? Compounds polishes, pads besides the white, orange, black foam Lake country pads or yellow rupes foam pads?

MB paint is typically hard as most German paints are. But pad choice is also dependent on paint condition. If its not too bad a orange pad can polish effectively even with a medium polish. Your definitely going to want something with a little more ability to correct like a medium polish (I like Regenerate from Angelwax or Griots Correcting Creme) and maybe a yellow or blue foam pad. Do a test spot and see and go from there. Microfiber is far more aggressive in correction but on some paints can marr and require a second step to remove micromarring with a white foam pad and fine polish.

With the TW All in one the 50/50 pad they have may work. Just keep an eye out for micromarring and you may need to finish with a second step and their white pad. If you see that step down to the yellow pad to avoid that OR if that (yellow pad) doesnt correct enough it may need to be a 2 step and use the 50/50 pad (2-3 passes) and then don't remove the residue from the polish, put fresh product (less is best so 3-4 pea size drops) on a white pad and do 2 quick passes to remove marring and finish down well, then remove your polish residue. Its considered a 1 1/2 step cause you don't have to waste time removing the residue between steps. Hope that helps and does the trick
