Belmont Race with Secretariat set two World-records - He finished the Belmont 1.5 mile race in 2:24 secs. Winning the race 31 lengths ahead of Sham. The crazy thing is the Secretariat jockey was NOT using the whip, at ALL! While looking ate studying the films of that... You can plainly see Sham's jockey using the whip a LOT!

The eventual winner was so far behind the pack that it was able to go through any gap in the jump that got knocked down. Wasn't able to do that everytime, but that saved a lot of time AND energy. Always on the rail when appropriate. Excellent jockey skills.

Reminds me of a race at the Belmont Stakes in the 1950s (I think). Needles was in last place for most of the race, but turned it on toward the final stage and won by several lengths at the 1.5 mile track in Baltimore, MD. We listened to it on the radio, an old Truetone from Western Auto which was in a console and about 4 feet tall. We did not even have a TV then.

As someone who has been horseback riding for about 9 years I haven't seen someone this caring of their horse. A lot of racing horses are sadly abused so that pain is associated with not going at full speed. This rider just let the horse run and do the course in the way it could give its all in the end. Beautiful to see the bond and how this team won.

I have never seen such a clean race, even though some jockeys did not calculate well the distance of the jumps, although they use the whip at the end, I feel like this is kind of good comparated to what I am used to see in racing. It's splendid to see this Metaphor of "do not give up" in a real life example. They were losing for a lot of horses in distance, but they got it in the end. Splendid! So, Apply this to your life, do not give up even though it seems that you're not going to win, because with effort you will get it.

The rider had enough passion for his steed not to whip him, so the horse trusted him and tried harder. Which can’t be said for the other riders that push their horses to hard at the start and when they started to get tired they started whipping them, that’s not much motivation for the horses to be abused when they start losing. 🙄 So I’m glad the ‘under dog’ won.

There was a study on fighter pilots. An old idea was that punishment would improve their performance. It turns out that because they are already strongly motivated to do well, punishment actually made them perform worse on future attempts than if the error had simply been acknowledged and otherwise ignored. It seems obviously retrospect that you don't have to compel Michael Jordan to want to succeed, but you'd be surprised how long it takes new knowledge to percolate through society.

Horse races always remind me of an old joke: a teacher takes her class of first graders to the horse track, and at some point some of the boys need to pee, but can't reach the urinal, so she goes in with them and picks them up one by one. At some point she glances down and gets all flustered "my, you're well endowed" and the boy replies "well, ma'am, I'm one of the jockeys."

I don’t know why but watching these races gets me so emotional. I watch these horses running and giving their whole body and hearts into these races. All of these horses are beautiful and amazing. I think all of these have the potential to win, it depends so much on the rider and knowing the horses needs, limits and how they run. And the way the rider is upon the horse, the white horse that was in front for quite awhile started falling behind probably because was being pushed from the beginning and the jokey might’ve started to get tired himself and wasn’t riding the way he could’ve to give that horse it’s potential. But I do love seeing the under dog coming up from the back and winning!

Its quite simple, by the end the others are getting tired, so if you hold back and keep some in the tank then around the last corner give a burst of speed you should be able to pass the others. Edit: theres a bit of overuse of the stick at the end.. If it doesn't respond to the first 2, its not going to respond to the 5 after it. 😅
