Some of the most creative designs and unmatched craftsmanship. I stumbled upon your channel a few days ago and can't get over what you are able to do with wood and metal, especially using basic tools and NO metal lathe or mill. Simply amazing!!

2 dislikes, at this point?! I’ve been machining metal for almost thirty years, have a machine shop in my basement that partly continues in my garage, yet I have never seen a woodworker dish out the works, in metal, the way Attila does, without a proper machine shop, yet work the metal(s) like a machinist proper. This guy made his own metal cut off tool, from a circular wood saw, mind you, for a wood lathe! This guy is incredible! I’m starting to believe he might’ve taught MacGuyver everything he knows! As always, Attila, another incredibly, fantastic process of doing a great job.

@@PiefacePete46 He really is an exemplary craftsman! I've often dreamed of having such tools and completing ambitious projects, but the only tools I personally own are some needle-files, a cheap set of wrenches, and a mini wood lathe that's in need of repair. As one who works full-time on top of 18 credit-hours a semester, I can afford neither the time nor the expense. Every project I've ever done was either in school or in the workshop of a friend or family member. I'm only 25, so I know my time will eventually come. For now though, I am more than happy to sit back and enjoy these beautiful, and oddly therapeutic, videos!

Nice pleasing design, you have a gift for producing that. However using that carbide tipped or any tool that far below the lathes C/L is extremely dangerous. If your very very careful it can work just as you proved it can, but one single catch or mistake that causes the tool to dig in and that tool handle is coming up at amazing speed no matter how strong anyone thinks they are. Free hand turning metal by using what are normally thought of as wood lathe techniques isn't new, watch and clock makers have been doing so for century's. There cutting tools were once made from High Carbon Tool Steel, but today would normally be High Speed Steel and sharpened much like a hand engraving tool with a diamond shaped cutting face on it. For most wood workers those HSS tools would be much easier to sharpen than any carbide is unless you have the specialized silicone carbide grinding wheels for general rough shaping and then diamond wheels for the tools final sharpening and honing. I think I'll stick with my metal cutting lathe though. :-) As you already know aluminum does slowly lose it's polished luster over time. And any clear coat just doesn't look the same as bare polished aluminum. Try a few coats of a hard automotive paste wax on it. It's invisible and the polished surface will remain that way for much longer. Museums use a special wax on most metal items in there collections to help preserve it. Plus it greatly slows any rusting on ferrous metals.
@AttilasWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. And thanks for the tips, will check out the auto wax.

When I commented yesterday, I had forgotten about the coasters. I am just curious but, could you have just used a "regular" carbide skew for the lathe work? I asked Eddie Castelin and he seemed to feel it would be ok. But, you are actually doing it and I wanted to get your opinion. Did you make the tool just "because" or did you think a carbide skew would be inadequate. Love your stuff. Bill

About five years ago a momentary lapse in concentration led to a fairly catastrophic accident on my Makita drop saw, not for me, but the blade and the fence were badly damaged, I suffered only minor injury to my left hand (amazingly). I sent away for a new fence and put the blade aside for some future use. I like to try and make my videos interesting and to that end I decided to make a tool for turning aluminium. I have used my carbide turning tool before (on the napkin holder) but I wanted to make the video a little more interesting. I probably will never use that tool again:)

Quite frankly you need coasters for those coasters. The coasters are protecting something that isn't as important as the coasters themselves. During severe low blood sugar attacks I often have visions of "infinity" where I can see eternity for a brief moment. Creating never ending copies of those coasters to protect the coasters under it would be close to my horrific never ending visions of eternity. Not sure I want to applaud this or scream in terror. ;)
