Billie is amazing. As someone who has spent their entire elementary school (year1-8) in Special Education, seeing the staff take the time and initiative out to help these girls is inspiring. Just because you learn differently does not make you lower than anyone else, it helps you work hard towards what you truly want. For example I was told in Main stream school that I would barely graduate High School and would most likely need assisted living. Now 25, I am working towards my Master's Degree. So they can suck it. Thank you for the upload!! This genuinely made my day, and best wishes to all involved.

I have anger issues and anxiety and depression and adhd odd ocd and spd. I remember one day all I did was just say hi and hugged a friend and I immediately got restrained by my teacher the coach and the teacher nearby. I couldn’t move for 20 minutes because they restrained me mind you I was 8. I had bruises for WEEKS but the worst part is that A: this was in front of everyone B: they told my mom that I punched the teacher but I didn’t.

I attended this school and it was amazing! Growing up with cerebral palsy wasn't fun and bullying wasn't really helping with my attendance in school so this environment was a life changer! 30 now and was 15 when I first started/17 when graduated. Changed A LOT since this video obviously but still see a few of the same staff/girls I knew or know of (vid) Would seriously recommend this to those with girls who have disabilities as is extremely beneficial and helped me out a lot with confidence, learning life skills, making friends (whom I still converse with today) experience with my ongoing career and accepting that it was ok to be the way I am! Will def be going back and visiting sometime as I do miss Nelson!

I found this very inspiring. I work with young adults with learning differences and giving a person genuine support and conversation is so important. Of course mainstream education is going to squeeze them out, the old fashioned approach just doesn’t work with neurotypical brains never mind the latter. Receiving a letter for something that people take for granted is so touching and made me cry, it makes me even more determined to be the best I can be in my role. In my country special needs schools are very common , I can name 5 in my city . I didn’t know it was so rare in other countries ! . I worked at one and it was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve had I my life . The school was small , only 70 students divided in small classes of 10 kids . I knew every single kid and they all knew me .The kids where genuinely happy to learn but also felt safe . There was no bullying because every kid had a disability, autism , Down syndrome , fetal alcohol syndrome and all were intellectually disabled . The school let the kids do internships so they could find out what job they liked . When a kid turned 20 the school would find them a job . Besides basic reading , writing etc . They also learned a lot of practical skills . There was a huge kitchen where the kids would learn to kook, a lunch room next to it so kids learned to serve guests ( usually teachers on their lunch break or parents ) , a little farm with bunnies and chickens so they learned to take care of animals . A laundry room , art classes .. and so much more. All the kids I worked with would’ve drowned at a normal school, they needed the personal attention . It was such a happy place , I really miss it

Every time they got rid of something at my school it was "budget cuts" and years later we found out that the school board was hoarding millions of dollars that they didn't want to spend. They tried to cut band because of it. At a larger school, cutting a program is not that big of a deal but my school was small and for the kids in band it was their only outlet. The education budget needs to be expanded, not cut. You expect kids to keep doing better and better while you give them less and less resources. It's ridiculous. Kids can't improve if you don't give them a way to do it.

These teachers are amazing! The way they handle conflicts is really awesome instead of sending someone away and yelling they turn it into a teaching moment for everyone which is a really great for all kids not only kids with different learning or behavioral challenges. More mainstream schools need to take these techniques and implement them instead of always sending kids to detention or suspension.
@christineclarevilgos-mitch19557 жыл бұрын
In a perfect world the mainstream school system will be able to help all children and meet any need but until that happens I do think places like this are sometimes necessary. And I like that they are not saying this is forever but instead they are trying to help so that these kids can be successful in a mainstream program. However I do wish that if needed the kids could stay for a bit more time only because I fear some of the kids may be forgotten in the mainstream program with as little as 2 years. Everyone is different and some kids may need a bit more time. I wish there was a follow up with the girls in this video. Some of them seem to be doing so much better but I want them to be happy and love themselves and I wish that I could know if after all this that the were able to be confident and love themselves and not let bullies hurt them.

As someone who is autistic, I believe these schools should be everywhere! And a child shouldn't have to reach a crisis level before they are sent away to one. So many children with autism fall through the cracks in public schools. They're lonely, have low self esteem and can even end up suicidal. They need a place like Salisbury if only to be around other children like themselves and teachers who will treat them with the dignity that they deserve. No wonder they don't want to leave. I wouldn't. In this documentary the question is raised that sending children to such schools is segregating them. I disagree. Many children who are deaf go to schools that are only for deaf students. It's not to segregate them. It's so that they can have the best education for them as individuals, to get to socialize with their deaf peers and not to be distracted by the hearing world for such a large portion of the day. Shouldn't those who are autistic receive the same benefits? Of course, they will need to and have to interact with the outside world but education and child development is too precious to have interrupted by living in a world that isn't ours's while trying to learn!

I wish that people had been this understanding at my old school. It would be great if people could bring some of these lessons into the mainstream for kids who might not get to attend a place like this.

What a lovely environment. There isn’t one solution for children with disabilities. We need to asses each child and find the best solution for them. One of my besties grew up in boarding school in England and I swear that it was the best thing that could have happened to her... she was reared by professional parents and she turned out brilliantly!

I don't often comment on things. I couldn't stop crying then billie gave the narrator a note. They look nearly identical to my brother. who also has autism. I want to work with people with additional needs because of this. If I can help one child and show them that no everyone is ableist I will be happy. That poor girl had lost her dad and was moved to that school. It was obviously within her best interest but wow. what a strong girl.

I believe that as long as they have contact with the outside world they’ll have a fighting chance out there. You cannot just throw them in one and expect that to be the only thing needed. Things like integration are important. Obviously for academics I would prefer a place where they can do all that with the accommodations needed. I’m a product of having both. And also may be teaching as much as possible some self reliant skills. You can’t get a lot of things in the regular world without asking for it and working for it. Help doesn’t mean doing it for you. Swear to god that’s why am successful. I’ve got a long way to go but I don’t feel like crap when I’m out in the real world.

i think this school is great but i can't blame the government in new Zealand for not wanting to spend as much money on kids that will ultimately always have issues and difficulties contributing to society so maybe your school could take a different approach and charge tuition or have fund raisers and patrons that donate. I would be happy to donate to a school like this and then you can help kids without as much government oversight and approval.
