I have an Alabama story that still haunts me. I (white female) live in Appalachian Mtns of VA and my fiance lived on the west bank of New Orleans after college graduation. One trip by auto to see him, I stopped in Alabama (pretty rural) to get gas. Got a drink and some snacks and went to register behind two black guys. The white clerk ignored them, and asked to help me. I said these two gentlemen were here first. They looked down and said "Go ahead", the clerk said "No, I'll help you." So I paid and left because I had the exact amount already in my hand. But, I had never seen that blatant disregard for other people and it has bothered me for over 40 years. We should be better than this.

I have a Georgia story for you, from about 15 years ago. I stopped at a gas station near my house that I did not normally trade at, because I was quite low on gas, and why not? No automatic pumps, so you had to go inside to pay before pumping. I was the only white person in the place, and I was totally ignored. All other customers were served; I stood at the counter like an invisible person. Eventually left. This is NOT normal, but it does still happen.

The fact that the Supreme Court has purposely not made the rulings that are considered no brainers proves the point that we need a way to hold Court Justices' accountable. Right now they believe that they have no reason to do what they (and all of America) know is right because they will never be sued financially for their actions, plus none of them worry about going to prison for refusing to do what the Constitution requires them to do.

This is the right approach. We don't want to reg the maps toward Democrats, we want FAIR districts. Districts whose results reflect the electorate. Thank you Marc Elias and Eric Holder for devoting yourselves to this cause. The challenges by non-governmental units are a critical part of law. It's one of the most important decisions before the Supreme Court this year, which really concerns me. Dismantling Civil Rights has been an ongoing project of the Roberts Court. If you go in to Democracy Dockett on line, you can find a explanation of the Electoral College, why and how it was created and why it does not work today. You can also find info on the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact - a plan to go around the Electoral College without having to go through the long, and at the moment nearly impossible process in Congress to amend the Constitution.

48 states award electoral votes on the basis of winner take all. Thus if a candidate wins 49% of the vote he/she doesn’t receive any electoral votes. This essentially means 49% of the people are not represented by elected officials who are concerned with their interests. Getting rid of the electoral college would require amending our constitution. That’s not likely to happen nor is changing the way electoral votes are allocated in the 48 winner take all states.
