Atul Kochhar was born in Jamshedpur in northern India. He nearly became a doctor but after a few weeks at medical school he realised he truely wanted to be a "good chef". He trained and worked at the Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi. In 1994, he was appointed head chef at the Tamarind restaurant, in Mayfair, London and at the age of 31 became the first Indian chef to be awarded the Michelin star.

In 2002 he left Tamarind to start his own restaurant Benares and also joined Marks and Spencers as a consultant chef and advised on their Indian food range. Its menu reflects his passion for food from all areas of India and a setting to rival the most elegant of restaurants in London. In January 2007 Benares, won a Michelin star as well.
In 2009, Atul opened two further restaurants - the Vatika in Wickham Vineyard , Hampshire (currently closed) and Ananda in Dublin, Ireland.
His books inlcude Simple Indian: The Fresh Tastes of India's New Cuisine described as "'Mouth-watering dishes' by Observer Food Monthly; 'A glorious array of exotic cuisine' by Irelands Food and Wine" and Fish, Indian Style a book of simple and easy recipes, marrying fish with the spices and flavors of India.
Never complacent with the quality of his work, he returns to his homeland whenever possible to research new recipes and ingredients. His acclaimed cookbook "Indian Essence" is the product of one such trip and he is currently working on a second book on Indian vegetarian food.
His recipes appear widely in magazines and newspapers, and he demonstrates regularly on food shows in the UK and abroad. He lives in west London with his wife and two children. and teaches Indian cookery at the nearby Thames Valley University.
