Yamaha is right...there is a demand for mid size ATVs and especially BULLETPROOF ATVs like back in the old days. There is so much focus and coverage of the big bore high HP class of ATVs that people who have no desire for them get forgotten. There is a large group of people who have no desire whatsoever for 1000cc ATVs with 100HP. The 4 to 700cc class is making a comeback as people grow tired of snapping axles and tearing up gearboxes in quads with so much power they can destroy their own drivetrain. After awhile a ATV you can hit the trails with over and over again without breaking anything becomes more desirable. Back in the old days breaking and fixing things was actually pretty rare and that was after beating the crap out of them day after day. A 500cc used to be jaw dropping powerful and conquered all the same things we conquer today with a good rider. I think the fascination with big HP is wearing off and a large group of riders are going back to mid size quads that can take a beating day after day without self destructing. Polaris has sure sold the hell out of those 570s although they are no example of bulletproof reliability ( I have a right to say that...I own one).

Pretty spot on. I still have my 06' Kodiak 450 with the front diff lock, and my father is still riding his Kawasaki Prairie 300 he bought in 2001. That's probably the problem is those old bullet proof ATV's never die, and they want the new one's to break stuff so they keep coming back to the shop. I know a bunch of guys still riding around on Honda fourtrax 300's and will probably ride them till the day they die...and then pass them on to their kids.

It's the same thing with the auto industry, everything is over designed, over engineered, packed with computers and electronics and gadgets. I have a 2016 F150 and while i like it, I could never work on it and dread the day that the electronics and computer BS starts failing. I miss the old school simplicity of mechanical things, I wish i could buy some of the Russian vehicles I've seen(Lada, UAZ etc.) here in the US, year 2020 stuff that is so mechanically simple no BS electronics.

I bought the 2018 Kodiak 450 last year. I am somewhat of a beginner and really like this machine. It has plenty of power and feels very comfortable riding up and down trails. I just got back from a ride where I road about 30 miles. I had so much fun did not want to stop. I really enjoy this machine. I know it will last for many years.

I bought a Kodiak 700 base and didn’t really mind not having diff lock. Until I needed it. I bought 501 Parts “Grabber” kit. Swapping to electric soon but the cable diff lock does good for now. Diff lock is an ABSOLUTE MUST for anyone serious about riding. Also, I think the bigger/ more aggressive the tire, the more you’re GOING to want diff lock because it’s only going to make you want to try harder trails and creek crossings. And when the going gets tough..the tough get going, with DIFF LOCK!

Guys. I just bought one with eps. I’ve had many quads over the years mostly older back in day, but this is a great machine. Assuming you don’t need major horse power. She does pretty good , pulls trailer well for yard work and plenty o& torque. It’s real strength is it size. , bigger than the old 450 and perfect to blast through tight trails here in New England. I’m getting up there in age an$ didn’t want those monster size quads. Oh she is a great looking machine. Great job Yamaha.

Easily one of the very best true mid sized sport/utility quads ever produced. Highly reliable, not super heavy, great trail riding quads as well as good for a work quad. I really liked the years that they were still carbed and had a back up recoil, but in this day and age we never see that anymore anyhow. I bet the FI gives it a nice responsive feel off the bottom. My old Rancher 420 button shift I sold for a KQ750 yrs. ago "felt" very powerful on low end with the non cvt and FI combination..quick response...I like both makes of these true mid sized machines...Simplicity going to the Yamaha,,and the third headlight is a great add on...I will never plow snow on at atv without it ever again.

I bought a new one in 2005 before EPS was available, but it did come with front diff lock. I had it for 5 years and never had any problems other than leaking coolant that was due to poor assemby at the dealership not with the radiator itself. I never really had much need for the diff lock, but I guess it was nice to know I had it. At the same time I purchased a Suzuki Vinson 500 that did not have a front diff lock, and it was never a problem.

It's nice even today 5 years later after this review was made the smaller CC quads are coming back. grew up on an 03 Yamaha Kodiak. Small nimble and plenty of power for the 13 year old me at the time. Never been fascinated by the 750cc or 1000cc monsters. I respect their place in the ATV world. they have their desired users. But these aren't everyday machines. 35-45mph is enough. Some Just need a small nimble bulletproof single stroker to get work done with just enough balls to scratch that recreational itch. Glad they are sticking around.

We completely agree on all accounts. Growing up Kama a friend of mine had a 2 wheel drive Yamaha timberwolf 230. We beat the living crap out of it. It never broke, it never missed a beat. With 2 of us chasing each other around in the woods on smaller displacement machines it had plenty of power. We think more small displacement machines would only strengthen the segment. Thanks for the comment. Great talk.

After watching this I happened to go buzz around a local dealer staring at kodiak's wishing I'd bought one instead of my 17 sportsman 570 and they just happened to get the first 18' 450 in stock, handsome bike, comfortable and all but honestly this VS the 700 I'd buy the 700. I've seen 16-17 year EPS 700's going for $5200 here before taxes and such and I kick myself for getting my sportsman but the deed is done. I have a feeling a 450 kodiak isn't gonna sell in large numbers with how awesome the 700 is, and if they make a 450 grizz I don't think they'd sell many since most grizz owners are hard core off-roaders. Just my thoughts...nice bike though for entry level or cost effective owners. It'll do the job definitely

if I was buying a new machine for around the farm-ranch that everyone could ride from kids to adults for doing work and play, I would buy this base model machine. it makes perfect sense. I would buy the kodiak with no power steering, no locking dif, just a simple low maintenance quad that has less bs to break down. I love that you can push the 4x4 on the fly and you don't have to stop the machine. that way anyone can ride it without breaking it. kid friendly. Its so good looking i want one so I can look at it. Thank you Yamaha for listening to the customer, now you need to make a big 850 twin for big daddy to ride.

Yup another reason its superior, And it is by far the better bike for the 500 class. Cheaper and Diff lock along with all the options you would expect on a ATV. Suzuki just can't compete in the sales though. Marketing for there ATV's is non existent.

Walked into my dealer spring of 2016 looking at KingQuad 500 straight axle. All the sales reps where on launch one of the technicians noticed me due to the fact that I own two 98s King Quad 300 and 250 runner both 4x4. I just can't wrap my head around how the pricing Market was in there. Here I'm looking at a KingQuad 500 he points out a Kodiak 700 for $800 more. Granted I was losing differential lock that was pretty much it and the straight axle. Still want a differential lock so now I'm looking at Grizzly 700 eps or the king quad 750 with eps. But Suzuki wanted $2,300 more than Yamaha so I walked out with a Grizzly 700 eps for $7,900. Jacked it up to just shy of 11,000 after a five-year warranty all the paperwork and a few aftermarket parts. I felt Grizzly had a little bit more to offer than Suzuki plus Grizzy was on my bucket list

I realize this test is almost 6 years old, but my newly purchased 2024 Kodiak 450 SE is mostly unchanged. This makes me wonder why you had no complaints about the rear foot brake and yet my new model foot brake is completely worthless! Adjusting it tighter (using nearly all the adjustment threads) makes it better but I'm concerned about rear differential heat damage from to much drag. Hard to believe there's not a safety recall on this!

Yamaha is putting the electric diff lock back in the kodiak 450 eps se for the 2020 model. I was disappointed when I went to the dealer in 2016 to get a grizzly 450 and found out they discontinued the mid size lineup. I got the kodiak 700 and put the 501 parts grabber kit in. Swapped out the secondary spring to epi purple spring. Shimmed the primary 1mm and swapped to 20 gram weighs. Dramatic difference in the performance.

They need to bring back the Yamaha Big Bear, I believe it was a 400 class and not a 450 class but who cares...the 450 is only a 421cc engine anyways. I think a new Big Bear being available with either a straight axle or IRS with manual shifting and use the existing Kodiak 450 engine would make a great mid sized quad for people who still like to shift. I believe Suzuki still makes the Eiger/King Quad 400 available with a foot shift or CVT option, but it is straight axle only. I like that Suzuki has a CVT system very similar to the Yamaha system utilizing a centrifugal clutch for constant belt tension and real engine braking. At least that is how Suzuki used to be built...I haven't followed ATV's much for a decade now when I purchased my KQ700. I am crossing my fingers for Yamaha to put that new twin cylinder parallel 847cc WolverineX4 engine in to a ATV chassis...I'm sure ATV on Demand is hoping for a similar thing!!! I feel bad that Suzuki isn't doing much nowadays...always a good machine for the money too...I've often wondered if the reason is because the Suzuki car division went out of business and they are basically,,,,broke?

I thought power steering was basically put on machines with diff lock because they were hard to turn when engaged. No diff lock why bother with EPS. Also Yamaha needs to have more storage on their atvs. Those racks are really puny. Could hardly put deer on them. They are dependable, I'll give them that but why not keep up with the other manufacturers with racks and storage.
@ATVonDemand

unclekato power steering also comes in handy when you are trying to steer through deep ruts where you could easily be deflected off line. Power steering also acts like a steering stabilizer reducing jarring impacts from one front wheel from being transferred back to the handlebars. Given the option, we would rather have it.

@ATVonDemand
@ATVonDemand 7 жыл бұрын
Hatdog11 if we wanted a more compact machine or we wanted to spend less money then yes. Budget is obviously a limiting factor and some people like our longtime test writer and former motocross racer Aaron Meyer simply prefer a more compact machine where your body input has more influence over the handling. More compact machines are also easier to get on an offer for utility purposes. Well we have not tested the 570 SP we have written the XP chassis and are very familiar with the ProStar 570 engine. We're quite confident it's a great machine as well. We hope this helps. If you have any other more specific questions don't hesitate to ask.

Don't need diff lock anyways, yeah it's handy but drag the front brakes as if it were a cutting brake and it'll spin both fronts fine. No diff lock is also a challenge to find a better line when things get tough. Let's be honest the challenge is 2/3 the reason we ride off-road, it makes the adventure. A fully loaded 1000cc bike will rip yeah but it makes obstacles seem easy and small, so where is the fun in that unless you plan to do 70mph whipping by trees...mid size are the most fun on the market!

GARDEN TRACTOR GEEK this is such a tough decision. I can say with certainty that some of us on staff would go with the 450 While others would go with a 700. Yamaha swapped back to their 686cc single overhead cam setup for 2019. If they are still tuning the Kodiak 700 clutch for a more mellow power delivery than the Grizzly 700, you could buy that $6,999 Kodiak 700, drop in the clutch weights from the grizzly and haven't even more potent machine for very little money. We believe the 450 is still slightly more compact then the Kodiak 700. If you're the type of writer that would prefer a slightly more maneuverable more compact machine we'd say go with the 450. If you will want more horsepower in the future for turning larger tires, you plan on hauling or Towing larger loads, or simply think you might regret not having more power then we would recommend going with a 700. Thinking about this really makes it obvious that there is a place for both machines. We hope this helps.
@JohnnyRebKy

If its only a 1000 dollar difference I would definitely go with the 700. Of course thats a lot of money to us poor folks so I wouldn't be bummed out if I had to settle for a 450 either. I bought a new ATV in 2016 and bought a base model Sportsman 570 with no power steering, no abs, for 4600 bucks out the door. It was such a killer deal I couldn't pass it up. That being said I wish I had just bought a Japanese ATV even if it cost more and had less power than the Polaris. The Polaris is clunky and makes all kinds of weird noises...and just feel like its built sloppy and low quality. Id rather had less power in exchange for a well engineered machine like Yamaha makes. Its a mistake ill never make again. So dont get sucked into buying a Polaris because its cheaper and has more power. I miss the quality, refinement, superb engineering, reliability of riding a Japanese ATV. I feel like the Polaris could self destruct at any moment. You cant make a bad choice buying a Yamaha no matter which model you end up with

I miss the old Wolverine 450. Maybe it'll come back as the Timberwolf 450 or some other wild animal name like "Lynx" or "Barracuda" or "Honey Badger" or something lol. I believe half the reason Yamaha discontinued the Wolverine 450 is that Yamaha felt that their Grizzlies did well enough as sporty multipurpose bikes to not continue making the Wolverine - also other manufactures had capitalized on the market with bigger, faster, more expensive albeit more capable machines.

Front differential lock is not available on the Kodiak 450 for 2018. The Kodiak's seat height , which is what matters most when it comes to height or tallness, is 1/2 inch taller than the Grizzly 450 at 33.6 inches.

I just wish you didn't have to pay thousands extra for true 4x4 diff lock . These are 3 wheel drive I can't stand thay it's useless you have to pay so much for a diff lock button. That's the only reason I bought a polaris sportsman 850sp when it's in 4x4 the front diff automatically fully locks . Not just 3 wheel drive. Love the grizzly tho

Unfortunately, everything we ask for results in a higher price. Manufacturers are currently responding to the demand for less expensive machines The non EPS model retails for $5,999 and the Power steering versions starting at $6,899. Which would be more important to you, power steering or differential lock? What would the addition of differential lock be worth to you? How much more would you be willing to pay for it?

for what this bike is designed and sold for i think the locker isnt really necessary for most people. But for people like us here in canada when conditions are icy/snowy most of the year a locker is very handy. Especially since atv tracks are commonly used. Yamaha could make this as a gytr add on. I personally wouldnt buy an atv without a front locker for my use. Ive never felt the need for powersteering on my sportsman either if my opinion is gona be considered.

ontarioknivesNS7 I guess you didn't read my comment . First I know the grizzly has diff lock I obviously commented on the one in this video that does not . And I own a 2016 polaris sportsman 850 sp and the 4x4 is awsome no fucking buttons to push 3 times you put it in 4x4 and the second one wheel slips a fraction of an inch front and rear diffs lock all 4 wheels lock in completely and I have never had a problem with the belt or clutches ever and I have a highlifter kit and 28.5 inch mega mayhem tires with 1.5 inch spacers . Never a problem plus I have active decent control never have to use the brakes. And I was just saying I like the grizzly because the trannys are awsome and it actually has diff lock but none of the other models do they ate 3 wheel drive and that's useless.

To me the no lockers is a no go. No good yamaha. Lost some points with me. I like my 2014 450. It's a good loaner atv, I like the lower center of gravity when cornering, and it is a great utility atv for my property and has pulled a lot of firewood and hay. Don't need a large atv to do this imo just a good atv trailer. But, shame on the no diff lock. This will leave this loyal grizzly driver looking at and comparing closely with other brands. If I want to pull out my other atv this may be the difference between stuck and unstuck in the remote great basin mountains. Also the difference between making a hill climb and taking a tumble. In addition very rocky terrain, or once going over a large pipe across a wash diff lock is a plus. Me no likey.

The big bear 400 was one of the best small boar mud bikes ever produced it would be Awsome to see it come back with either the same motor with fuel injection irs manual shift an diff lock. But it would be really Awsome if they made the big bear with a 450 are 500cc motor same transmission manual shift fuel injection irs diff lock optional power steering. Now that would be a quad that would fly off the shelf I wouldn’t even change the frame most people that really us quads want the lightest lowest gear most reliable quad out there witch would be the big bear it was just lacking in cc make it a 500 would be number one seller. Offer it in mud edition am hunting addition.
