2021 Honda Foreman Rubicon 4x4 EPS 520 manual shift Test Review
We’ve had the 2021 Honda Foreman Rubicon 520 for quite a awhile now, and to be perfectly honest with you we’ve come to appreciate this machine more and more over time. Our expectations for this machine, after the number of high-performance tests we’ve done over the last two years we’re certainly tempered, and rightfully so. It’s not the over powered performance-oriented machines that are offered by other manufacturers. But having the Rubicon around for so long gave us the opportunity to see exactly why so many enthusiasts ride red their entire lives.
Any machine will break when subject to the right amount of abuse, but Honda tends focus on quality components, attention to detail, and fit and finish that leads to extended lifespans. The Rubicon is the ideal machine for the hardcore explorer, work, or even as a low maintenance mud machine because of the advantages of the Honda Transmissions over the commonly used CVTs. There are some sacrifices in performance compared with the competition, but that didn’t prevent us from having a blast on the Rubicon.

@@ATVonDemand Absolutely NOT. Quite the opposite I’ve kept my fingers sore changing oil constantly and keeping an eye on them . They keep them in mud and water constantly , and two of them have sunk theirs more times than I can count . You can change oil and clean air boxes as fast as you want but eventually after enough times , the cylinder walls are gonna get scored and oil is gonna seep by. And yes we have disciplined them about it , they are young boys still with a lot to learn . I was a young boy once lol. Edit: yes on the abuse , they are ridden hard.

The odometer has rolled over 21 times so it has over 21,000 miles on it but the engine has never been opened. Only needed a new axle in 2016 because the splines basicly machined themselves round over time. Other than that it's been as unkillable as the 01 rancher and the 200es threewheeler. Just bought a '21 rubicon deluxe off the showroom floor for my wife. I have a '20 sportsman 850 limited. She never liked the bulk and low end power of it. I've always been a honda fanatic so buying the rubicon was an easy choice. We've only got 11 miles on it so far. She does automatic on general riding but does the manual shift on the steeper trails I have cut. She loves the ride, extremely comfortable, and has plenty of power for her. The Powe steering is her favorite part. The only bad thing I can say is the small amount of storage but is definitely not a deal breaker. Love the machine!

I got the Rubicon when it first came out 21yrs ago because I like climbing hills in automatic & shift going down. I had a 86 Suzuki 230 Dual Range & I didn’t think I needed anything bigger & sometimes wish it had 4wd. I use my Rubicon for mostly plowing & that was a huge mistake. I wasn’t ever going to put a plow on it after I had a plow on my Suzuki but someone gave me a plow. The city puts salt on the roads & it just eats it up. One of my front brakes got salt in the brake & ate it. Both back brake cables had to be replaced from rust. I was surprised the rear drum didn’t need to be replaced yet & I mostly use engine braking. Did have to replace all front A-arm bushings. The reverse lock out switch went out. I have about 5500mls on it & replaced tires once & 2 batteries. The original battery lasted 14yrs. I got another Yuasa & it only lasted 6yrs. I put in another one in last year & hope it will do good or I’ll be getting a different brand to save money. Top speed I topped out was 50mph & that’s too fast for me. What if I crash & I don’t plow at 50mph. I haven’t found a good reason to why I ever want to go bigger than a Rubicon when I can hardly drive over 25mph when I ride mostly in the mountains. Plus there’s getting to be more people on the trails & I have to pull over more to let others by. I’ve seen to many people getting hurt or killed because they try to go as fast as they can in the woods. Bigger doesn’t always mean better & I had more fun on my little Suzuki. It was easier for me to man handle when I got stuck & I could jump it easier. It was just more nibble & I have hauled another person with a deer. I rather have a lighter machine then a heavier one any day. I’ve never been a fan of CVT & I don’t like the throttle response & how it engages at first. One of my friends was riding my brothers Polaris & he couldn’t get it to move because he never drove a CVT before. He gave it more throttle than needed & about got killed. There was a Lady where I live that had a Polaris & she was doing yard work. She was parked on a little hill. I’m assuming she was trying to feather the throttle but wasn’t going anywhere & she gave it more that it flipped killing her. I’ve even seen a news reporter almost got killed trying out a quad with a CVT. I should of taught my friend how to ride a CVT & I will never own a CVT. If I can easily do a wheelie with a quad by giving it enough throttle I won’t own it. I’m all about safety & no need for me to drive over 45mph because all the roads I drives on has a top speed limit of 45. I tried to convince myself to replace my Rubicon with a Sportsman once but couldn’t do it. The Polaris had a better ride & the 4wd is amazing but there’s things I hated. It had a reverse over ride button like my Brothers & for down hill engine braking had a switch for that. Then I don’t like having only one hand brake. I’ve been in a lot of situations where I was glad that there was a brake on both handle bars. A Polaris is more complicated than my Rubicon & I don’t need to worry about pushing buttons to go into reverse or flip a switch for engine braking. I would hate plowing snow with a Polaris because I use a manual lift I created that goes on my front rack. I have a lever & pulley system that is better than a winch. I tried a winch & hated it. It wasn’t fast enough plus I couldn’t feel the ground with it going over grass or rocks. A neighbor copied my idea for his & another neighbor wanted one like mine before he died because he was always bending stuff & should of had a rubber stopper on his winch. I lift up my plow use front brake on right handle bar because foot brake is mostly full of snow. Hook up plow with left hand reach down to left shifter to put in reverse. A old neighbor had a plow on his Polaris & said my setup was a lot faster. Most people I know that has Polaris are always breaking down & the front compartment lid is always broken off. It’s because Polaris don’t take the time to do much research like Honda & try’s to be the top dog in the cc wars. That’s what it seems like to me & let their customers find the faults in them that can cause death. Honda got into hot water with the Odyssey & they think a lot on safety now. I’ll be shocked if they ever add a 1000cc to a quad & they don’t really need to. Having a bigger motor makes the machine heavier. I’ve had my Rubicon land over the top of me because I kept hitting rocks with my plow mount & tried to avoid them. I could hardly use my strength to push it off of me & I wouldn’t want a heavier one. I do want the new Rubicon 520 someday but I would never put a plow on it. I’ll keep the old one for that. Do a shot out all about safety. Like the pros to why you want a brake on both handle bars. Years ago all quads had both breaks & there was a maneuver you had to do to pass the ATV riding course. I don’t know how it is now that some ATV manufacturers come with one hand break now. One maneuver I do that can’t do with a Polaris. I have a hard time climbing in & out of the trailer. I walk along my quad driving it in & grab the front brake. Then go around put it in gear & set emergency brake. I push it off using back brake. I’m very picky when it comes to quads & I wish mine had diff lock, power steering, able to take it out of 4wd & IRS. The new Rubicon almost comes perfect for me & wished it came with a 2” hitch. I built one on mine. I like the new one that has a switch to turn off handlebar light if something was on rack. I seen a video of when the new 520 came out that it had a pull start. They talked about the battery can be fully dead to work because mine only works if I have a little juice in battery for pull start to work. I read a comment that it’s only optional. I’ll have to find out more but at lest you can add it. I like the idea of having pull start. I was parked out in shed & I had to pull start it. No going back to house to get a jump pack or carry one with me. Thanks for the videos!

I ended up on two different wait lists only to be disappointed each time. I finally found the right dealer, at the right time, in a unique scenario, and finally got my red foot shift. "it's hard to kill a Honda". I grew up on TRX 250x's back in the 90's and fell in love with Honda reliability. Now I'm looking for an ATV that will be suited for mostly work on the farm, dragging a trailer, and some trail cruising. I don't need an insane off-road speed demon just looking for a general workhorse that is reliable and has some features. It's odd to me that Honda has their 'highest spec' utility ATV - the Rincon, that has less features than the other utility ATV's. Perhaps I'm missing something, but the Rincon doesn't even have a place for a ball/hitch or diff locks... seems the Foreman Rubicon has more features. How much can these Rubicons tow? for reference: Polaris says their sportsman 580 can drag 1350lbs. Right now, my choice is between this, in manual with EPS and the Polaris SPORTSMAN 570... What am I missing?

When you add up how many come with A CVT and how many come with an auto clutch manual shift, which one is now standard is obvious. Obviously we are still advocates for the good old manual shift.

Mine is a 2020, has a sputter at low rpms from its first ride. They can't figure it out. Been in the shop 6 times, just throwing parts at it. Now its at a different dealer. Saying there is a recall on the program and it will not except the new flash. On top of that, the dct would get stuck in a gear and have to stop, turn it off to reset. All kinds of codes are showing. Would think after 15+ years they would have it figured out. I haven't owned a Honda in awhile and probably be the last. I've read about others having problems. Honda does seem to care. Paying 10k that I've rode 8 times in a year. It's still in the shop.

Honestly, should the big three Japanese brands decide to pull their heads out of the sand and build a decent twin with at least 70-80 horsepower or more, I fully believe that it would hurt Polaris and Can-Am would struggle financially. For years people all over the internet have asked and begged for this to happen with many stating should something like this be built, then they would sell their Polaris or Can-Am in a heartbeat.
