And replying within 1hr, you got a new subscriber Mr! 😉 Since I'm here may I ask something. I have soft wood door frames and primed doors and architraves (Deanta). I'm finding it hard on how to proceed - I bought shellac primer, solvent based undercoat and Dulux Satinwoood. I've already put wood filler in the frames as they have some imperfections and also hide the hammer fixings (watching your video suggests I should have done that after the primer). Now I'm selling the solvent based paints as I want to avoid the bad odor and cleaning the brushes as well as the long time between coats. If I move to waterbased, do I prime the softwood and undercoat all together and then paint all together ? I really wanted them gloss but not sure it will look good enough. So many questions 🤪🤯 Thank you 🙇♂️
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes I would first prime the remaining areas of bare timber after treating the knots. Then apply one coat of water based undercoat, or two to ensure it looks nice and white before applying your choice of top coat. The Crown Fastflow gloss does give a nice finish if you are looking for a gloss. I used it on a small cabinet in my "how to transform pine furniture in one day" video.

These videos are refreshingly comprehensive and concise. Agree about the Purdy. The wall brushes are superb, they hold their shape, but wear beautifully to your stroke. Hard to go back after you've used them. Their poles aren't much cop, but I use the marathon mini a lot. The coverage those little sleeves achieve, and the speed you can move them at is incredible.

Very good. I just used some Bullseye 1-2-3 and Johnstone's Aqua Guard. The point about the brushes is critical, synthetic brushes are not a "nice to have". I had a set of Harris ones, which just said they were suitable for all paint types. They were fine with vinyl emulsion on the ceiling, but with the Aqua Guard on the wood, they were a nightmare. Paint dragging, not adhering. I thought it was the paint, yet I had seen videos of it being applied successfully. I switched to a different brush (a Dulux one I had for cutting in) which I knew was fully synthetic, and the paint went on like a different product. If you are going to use some water based paints, don't soldier on with old brushes that you have in the shed, unless you know that they are synthetic! If in doubt, get some from a decorator's centre, and take their advice.

Oil based paint will adhere very well to water based paint. For example, woodwork previously painted with water based satin. If you wanted to apply oil based satin then as long as it is in good condition, lightly abrade with a fine abrasive and apply the oil based satin directly onto the surface. If you wanted to apply an oil based gloss, then first apply an oil based undercoat. Glad you are finding the videos helpful.

I just bought a new house and the doors are pealing where bumped I believe they threw a latex gloss over an oil and now it peels like a sunburn what can I do about it?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
This is a common problem and can be a real pain. Unfortunately unless the top coat of latex is completely removed it will continue to be a problem. I know you hate sanding 😒 but if you are lucky sometimes if you abrade it with a 80 grade abrasive it will come off in pieces. Alternatively a very sharp scraper used at a low angle may remove it. I do hope you can sort it out without to much hassle Diane 😊

Can I use this on a floor. I am in a small rented apartment but can’t remember what I used - it was floor paint then I stencilled a pattern over and top coated that was five years ago and it needs re-done- just want a different pattern..

Yes, that should be fine Linda.

Can you apply this method to the frame as well, sand it then use same paint as the door?

Yes you can 😊

This is a great video, thank you. I have a question I hope you can help me with. I have a wall that the previous owner painted with gloss paint. I want to paint over it with emulsion. Can I use the Zinsser stuff on the whole wall before the emulsion and not have to sand the wall down?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can do that, however, giving the wall a light sand down with a 240 grade abrasive first will help to improve adhesion and also make it look better. Hope all goes well for you.

Hi Aubrey, I’ve currently got one coat of 123 on the woodwork/door in a bedroom that’s been glossed previously. But I’ve run out of 123 now. I’ve got a tin of zinsser cover stain available and a tin of quick dry undercoat available. I want to end up with an eggshell topcoat. Should I use cover stain for a second coat or the quick dry undercoat before the eggshell?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I would use the cover stain, many decorators use this instead of the 123 when changing from oil to water based. Hope all goes well with the decorating 😊

@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating I thought the whole point of using the 1-2-3 was to prime for a water based top coat. Using Cover Stain is switching back to using oil/alkyd. Doesn't it defeat the object of using 1-2-3?

I’m painting the external masonry wall on my house. Previous occupiers have used oil based emulsion so the modern day exterior paint is flaking off, can I use the Zinnser under masonary paint? TIA
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 123 is fine to use externaly and should be very suitable for this project. Hope all goes well for you Jenny 😊

Thanks for the video, very helpful. Just had an average 2 bed flat painted for £2900 + vat.......(Havent paid yet). Walls are white and there was white oil paint on the woodwork before and all in good condition but a bit yellow. Painter just finished and walls are perfectly ok. I asked for mid priced water based eggshell and he used crown fast flow satin white straight on the woodwork. Problem is you can very easily scrape the paint off with a finger nail on every bit of woodwork......I hate to think what state it will be in after a few months. I don't think this is acceptable and after watching your video he should have primed it first......could I ask what you think? Many thanks Adam

Water based paint does struggle to adhere when applied directly onto oil based paint like gloss. It is good practice to first apply a sealer like Zinsser Bullseye 123 or Zinsser Cover Stain. This does make a big difference. The paint might require scraping off before sealing and re-painting.
@paulstockley441 Жыл бұрын
He should have sanded it all down, then primed and undercoated. I'm forever undoing poorly painted jobs on woodwork. Sounds like he just put 2 topcoats straight on.

After removing the old paint on a wooden garden table, we applied oil paint without colour. Is it OK to apply water-based paint on that to colour it now that a week has passed or should we wait longer? We're having 36-42° C 18 hours a day for your information.
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Жыл бұрын
Hi, have been watching it on the news about how hot it is over where you are. It can`t be easy. I would wait until the temperature has dropped to a more forgiving temperature before applying any more paint. Then perhaps apply some Bullseye 123 onto the oil painted table before applying a coloured water based top coat. Alternatively you could apply Zinsser BIN Primer instead of the 123. Hope it gets cooler for you all soon, only 20C over here in South of England.

Hi, I've got a door where the inner hinge edge of the door has lots of paint chips out of it. So I need some product to fill this in and get the edge nicely square. The indents are only 1mm depth at most though. I tried some Ronseal wood filler on my skirting boards which had a similar problem, but it was difficult to apply, and also to sand smooth afterwards. Would you just use some smooth polyfilla, or something else? Thanks
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating2 жыл бұрын
If you look at my video called how to fill cracks and holes in doors and windows I am using a filler which may be good for this. It is a very tough filler. Once you add the hardener it dries very quickly so you will need to work fast. Mix a small amount at a time, leave for about half an hour before rubbing down. Hope you manage to get this problem sorted 😊

Just one question. Paint brush. Roller or spray gun for trims. What do you think
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
My personal preference is to use a good quality paint brush like a Purdy. I also normally thin the trim paints slightly before application which gives a much better finish and reduces brush marks. Hope all goes well for you Mukesh 😊

Can I paint a oil based paint straight on to existing oil based paint or do I need to sand it back and undercoat it? Thank you
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating Жыл бұрын
I would always recommend abrading the surface first with a 240 grade abrasive paper to improve adhesion and finish. If you are going to apply an oil based gloss paint then you will need to first apply an oil based undercoat. If you are going to apply an oil based satinwood or eggshell then no undercoat is required. I hope that helps.

I've just painted the woodwork using Dulux Trade Diamond Satinwood with a Harris Trade brush but I can distinctly see brush marks on parts of the door and window sill after applying a Homebase water based primer/undercoat and 2 coats of Dulux. Where have I gone wrong?
@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating3 жыл бұрын
Some of the water based primer undercoats are quite thick in texture. They do not flow out like their oil based alternatives. If you use these again I would suggest thinning them slightly with water to make them less viscous. When dry give them a light rub down with a 240grade abrasive before applying the water based satinwood. I also thin the satinwood slightly with water when I use it. It helps it flow out better and reduces the brush marks. I hope that helps.
@andrewfenning30433 жыл бұрын
@@AubreysAbsoluteDecorating did feel the satinwood paint was quite thick and hard at times to work with. Watering down slightly makes a lot of sense! Thanks Aubrey will give that a try!
