They are one of the most original bands out there but as Phil said we all have different tastes. I will say this about the Smiths. They are the most talented original band I am NOT into. I should like them but they are just too effeminate for my TASTE. I grew up in England and am allergic to English sentimentality and endless self pity and androgyny. I have had gay friends and even band members but as with Queen it is a sound I do not relate too. Back then I preferred Depeche Mode, the Psychedelic Furs, Japan, Pil and then the Stone Roses. Then came Slayer and I found a reason to love real Metal again after 10 years (ie Since Led Zeppelin's 'Physical Graffitti' the last of the great initial Metal era that started with I and Ozzy's Sabbath!

I've liked the Smiths since I first saw them in '86. Good music, whether its Pantera or the Smiths just goes to show variety is the spice of life.
@guitar199719 жыл бұрын
Just when I thought Anselmo couldn't get much more awesome I find out he's a Smiths fan. I'm from Manchester and round here, they are so deeply ingrained in the local culture that its almost inescapable but in the best way possible. The Queen is Dead is one of my favourite albums of all time and I've always said that they have a lot in common with metal. My dad who's a huge Smiths fan but not the biggest fan of metal saw me watching an Iron Maiden show on the TV and asked "I don't see how you can like this and still say you like the smiths" But they both appeal to similar demographics: Outsiders. They both appeal to the weird, alienated kids who never fit in at school. And like a lot of my favourite metal bands, it doesn't matter how many times I listen to their music, it never for one second ceases to amaze me.
@77Creation Жыл бұрын
They both appeal to similar demographics: white, xenophobic bigots. Minorities are the definition of outsiders. And since we made being outsiders cool, now we can’t even have that. See Rock N Roll, Jazz, Disco, House and Techno for just the latest examples.

The Smiths are my favourite band first equal with The Beatles. Glad to see that Phil Anselmo 'gets it' especially re Morrissey's humour. Can totally hear Oscar Wilde's influence on Morrissey due to the fact that he's both painstakingly melancholy but utterly comical at the same time. That takes a rare and unique talent.

"I think they're heavy in their own way", "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side, they could be singing about me" never paid attention to Pantera but this man is great. He totally got what The Smiths were about, give a voice to the voiceless, to the common people from all over the world that don't have a cheesy love story to share or a story about success to tell. The Smiths were at a time when people was singing shit like "Oh, living on a prayer" or "All we hear is Radio GaGa" or "You're in the jungle baby", and even the artists that tried to write something smart, something that "says something about our lives", like Moz would say, failed at connecting to the audience, like Overkill by Men at Work, or Senses Overworking by XTC. And failing at connecting to the audience doesn't make them bad, those are great tunes, but Morrissey truly knew how to say exactly what people were going through, and many times say something that makes people realise what they were going through. He's one of the few persons that can say "I know how you feel" and actually know how you feel. He was fascinated with the image of the popstar, that's why most of his stuff is like that, but then again, he ended up being probably the best popstar of all time. That's why The Smiths are great, leaving aside the music, which combined with the lyrics makes them one of the greatest of all time. Also love his voice when he quotes their songs, this man is charming (yes, I pun intended)

I'm from Manchester, so the Smiths are incredibly meaningful to me, as I see what Morrissey was writing about, every day. I've found that a lot of heavier music is influenced by the Smiths. Dave Verellen of Botch/Narrows is a Smiths/Morrissey fan, too! Maybe it's exactly what Phil Anselmo says in this clip - the Smiths were brutally honest in everything they did. The lyrics blatantly showed the darker side of life, and the music was stark and bold. Both of these traits are the basics of heavier music.

Genius, is genius. It comes in many forms lyrically and instrumentally. You can judge the quality of an artist, by the multitude of genres that have influenced them, and whom they've influenced in return. Rap, Metal, Pop,Rock, Indie,etc. artists from all of those genres have listed The Smiths and/or Morrissey as an influence. Love or hate an artist, you should acknowledge the quality of the mark that they leave, by whom they've influenced and how relevant they stay as time goes by. The Smiths, disbanded more than 25 years ago, and they still get the cover of magazines pretty regularly. Morrissey, didn't even have a label until recently, and he went without one for YEARS!! Despite that, he sells out every single appearance he makes within hours, and sometimes minutes. That's a mark of success and longevity. You can't buy that, but you sure as hell earn it and it speaks volumes.
